video update: new greenhouse and some species
« on: July 04, 2015, 07:57:36 PM »
Hi, I did it in spanish... dont have too much time these days, but maybe I could do it in english later

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeZXGWiXGw4&feature=youtu.be

By the way: how should I embed a video in this forum???

Various species under the protection of the new greenhouse built by Ricardo and Adriana from "Apihuerto", which I recommend because they do a beautiful job with great care in Argentina.

Some plants passed cold and frost during the autumn when they were still outside, so they are not in the best shape yet.

The rarest species, at least in Argentina, are: cempejack (Hawaii), chachafruto (Colombia), grimal Jaboticaba (Brazil / USA), cabelluda (Taiwan / Brazil), Jaboticaba blue or vexator (Venezuela / Portugal), Jaboticaba Red Hybrid or precoce (Hawaii / Brazil / Japan), Chamba (Peru / Colombia), which need to be protected from the cold, dry wind during our winter.

In contrast, native species such as Pitangas, Guaviyú, arazá, guavas, native jaboticabas, some psidium like p. longipetiolatum, etc., could spend the winter outside, yes, if possible near a wall or eaves to protect them from frosts. They are inside now, just to achieve faster growth.

The idea is to grow edible forest trees for generating nutrition food for the people, consuming very little labor power (ie, targeting social freedom!).

one way of doing it.

1. take out "s" in https
2. add "embed" inbetween com/watch for example

new link
Code: [Select]
[url=http://www.youtube.com/embed/watch?v=IeZXGWiXGw4&feature=youtu.be#[/url]
old link
Code: [Select]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeZXGWiXGw4&feature=youtu.be
embedded

Thanks Adam, well... besides the names of the plants, there are some similar words in our languajes, for instance:

domo geodésico --> geodesic dome
protección ultravioleta --> ultraviolet protection
triángulo --> triangle
forma geométrica --> geometric form
eficiente, materiales --> efficient, materials
jardín --> garden

(words from the video)

We the argentines have a slightly opaque pronunciation, it is not bright and sharp as the spaniards, it is sweeter as the portuguese, but it is more difficult to distinguish our words than spaniards. In fact, our tone is much like the Galician, sorry about that! it makes things harder for you ;)

A lot of plants here were grown thanks to the advice from people of this incredible FORUM, many of these plants are alive just because of you, Adam, Oscar, Steven and other people and their seeds, that's very happy to me.

awesome new greenhouse! Something like that could be reinforced to withstand all kinds of storms, nice going - socio, te la comiste!
'Virtue' should be taught, learned and propagated, in order to save others and oneself.

Thanks Leooel: as far as I know, this kind of domes could  withstand all kinds of storms, and that is why we did it that way

here are a few bits of advice:

-let plants stay root bound for as long as possible

-repot plants into the same pot if possible (many times you can put the plant back into the same pot, just prune the roots, and add some fresh soil...bonsai growers do this all the time)...only put into a new pot if there is no other choice.

-do not increase pot size too much at once...gradually increase, only adding about 2-5 inches of diameter to the root ball at one time.

-you are basically a bonsai grower, but you want to encourage the plants to fruit as well, not just stay small..so you will have to give them lots of water (if they are root bound especially...but some plants do not need as much water as others....for instance Muntingia calabura can handle being root bound, without too much water needed to keep it happy, and fruiting....jaboticaba is not the same).

-so you will need dishes for the bottom of the pots (for certain trees...Myrciarias especially, and root bound plants that have high water needs)

-also you will need to prune the trees eventually, to keep them small enough to stay in a pot, and fit in the dome (green house)

i know you already know most of this, but I don't want you to be afraid to prune the trees!....or to prune the roots!!  so many people are afraid to do this!

and I also didn't want you to step up (repot) the plants too quickly!  this is another common mistake...people don't realize that it helps the tree to fruit faster (in some cases, especially with Eugenias, and Myrciarias) if the tree has restricted root growth.
I suppose the plant decides to produce flowers sooner, because it has no choice...it can't really grow more roots...so it tries to survive somehow, and keep growing.  The plant runs out of options, and is forced to bloom,  :D

very nice subject, Adam, I didnt did some of your tips in the past because I was afraid, for instance the root bound tip: I read that an old man who grown chirimoyas here in Argentina, wasted a lot of them because they were root bound:

* is it true that if a tree is too root bound it would not make any sense to plant it in the ground?

I liked your video. It was a bit hard to understand, but I'm not used to Argentinian accent. Still was easier to understand than Andalucian, which just sounds like a blur of sounds to me. Lol.

sometimes this is true, sometimes it is false.

it depends on what type of tree it is.

for instance, I have heard that if you get a rootbound or stunted mango, and plant it out, it will remain stunted forever.

but I have planted trees (myrciarias, and annonas come to mind) that have been extremely stunted, and rootbound until the point of near death...but when they were planted out, they grew like normal trees, very large and vigorous.
