Any idea what kind of fruit/nut this is?

My niece found this fruit by the water in the tropical rain forest here in Suriname. I have asked some people if they know what it is, but nobody has an answer. It seems like a nut to me. Does anyone know the name of this fruit / nut? And if so, can you eat this?

Looks similar to "Couepia bracteosa"
