What is the best Atemoya tree to plant in San Diego (zone 10a)?
« on: December 29, 2017, 03:27:50 PM »
I have an el bumpo and chaffey cherimoya. I havent tried an atemoya, but I've heard they are quite delicious and would like to add one to the yard.

What is the best tasting variety? What is the best producing variety? Which tree should I ultimately be planting with these two considerations in mind?

Leo’s Hybrid #3 is also very good. It’s a cross between a Cherimoya and an Atemoya and has excellent acidity.

Frank is the Annona expert here. I would love to try La Habra Blanc!

WOW that looks absolutely stunning!

When you say that Le Habra Blanc is the best atemoya of the year, could you explain this? Do some varieties taste better certain years? How is the taste of your LHB atemoya? Is the tree productive? I have very little room left, so I really want something that can produce.

La Habra Blanc is the best, and La Habra Sun is outstanding, too?  So those two were #1 and #2 this year?

How about African Pride. I am in North San Diego County. My tree have been in ground for about three years. It has over 50 fruits this year. The fruits are chewy, sweet and so delicious this year.

I don't know any of JF's varieties (they sound awesome JF, would love to try them) but I do know that I don't really like African Pride. I top worked my African Pride over to Pinks Mammoth, another really common variety here. I think it is a texture thing for me, I am no good at describing fruit taste compared to others on this forum. I also grow Tropic Sun and would love someone to comment on its taste in the subtropics because I haven't had any yet, I might let it fruit towards the end of the season (still a small tree).

Ulfr,

It could be that you don't like AP. Or it could be that your AP is not in a good spot to produce good fruit.

I have 2 atemoya with the same scion, not AP, planted 25 feet apart. One produces good fruit, the other produces bad fruit.

My cousin next door has 2 different cherimoya, 15' apart. One produces good fruit. The other produces nasty fruit.

Tricky trees.

Where can we get a hold of any of the tree variety that you mentioned, Frank?  Thanks for your input.
