Looking good! TR Hovey is a papaya that I'm interested in growing. I'm currently growing Waimanalo & Sunrise, but they haven't flowered yet.
-
wow - beautiful symmetrical fruit! My trees produce tasty orange-fleshed fruit, but few are perfectly round like yours are.
-
Wow thats a nice tree. Do you know how old it is? Mine is just a year old and I was shocked at how fast it grew.
Have any of you guys ever actually tasted a TR Hovey papaya?

REB1136,
The friend I took this picture of tasted them and didn't find them to be amazing, but they did get knockked off the tree a bit premature due to being up on a cinderblock, when winds came through!
That tree was only one year old at most....purchased from logees, already about 12inches, so maybe 1.5yrs total?
I hear they do have that vomit taste that some object to here in FL...maybe not so much in other areas I hear....this has been a source of debate....but I'm searching for a papaya that's not a red lady, that doesn't taste like vom. :P
-
Hi Adam, the area where i live Puna, is the largest papaya growing area in the USA. Yes Hawaii is part of USA believe it or not! ??? All the papayas here have had the vom bred out of them. They are exported to mainland USA and Japan, where consumers are very picky and prefer not to eat vom. HAHAHA So all the solo types are quite tasty: sunrise, sunset, waimanalo, and kapoho.

I hear a few folks around FL have nice varieties, but they don't share seeds I guess!!! ::) >:( ;)
Papaya is hard to share with tissue culture going on!! ;D
I'm on the hunt for the one!!! sweet melon taste, with benign barf flavor.
YES, Hawaii is USA, but the miles of ocean around between us, and your time zone, culture 8), plus the late arrival into statehood, all make for a seemingly exotic, foreign, and less connected state from USA...in my opinion...I'd be scared to live on island :-[ :(!!! So u see what kind of pansy grower I really am! :-[ :-[ :-[ ;)

ASaffron,
Thanks for the info. I have only eaten 1 papaya and it was store bought and boy was it awful ???. Hopefully mine will taste better if not Im sure I can find someone to give them too.

Scared to live on island? Why? You might get overly relaxed? HAHAHAHAHA

scared a rattlesnake might bite me and I'd be thousands of miles from anti venom :'( ;)! Or a volcano erupting on my poor broke ass! :'( :'( ;) ;) ;D
Love to visit, but I hear Ice is killing the Hawaiians (Dog bounty hunter ::)), and I'm a bona-fide stereo-typical HOWLIE! ??? :'( ;)

Land is pretty affordable in Puna, especially after the real estate market went down around the country. I was thinking about possibly buying some land and moving to Puna. However, a number of things would prevent me. High cost of living for basics that are imported, slow economy with very few jobs, the bugs, cost of flying to visit family and mainland, would have to leave my plant collection behind.
Sorry to go off topic, I may get a TR Hovey soon from Ebay. It seems like a great container papaya to grow.

depending on your location I can get you a seedling to trade, or maybe for free if I have seed...this variety is patented so I can't sell ??? :'( so you get for free or trade from me! but could be a bit different due to pollination I've heard....

Would love to trade with you Asaffron, I like collecting various useful edible plants and herbs.

Got news for you Adam! No rattlesnakes here in Hawaii, or any other snakes for that matter, except for harmless one about the size of an earthworm. Hope they don't scare you? HAHA
As for ice, it's only a problem around big city: Honolulu. Not a problem in rural areas. I would think there is a lot more floating around your neighborhood than mine! Sorry, but doesn't Florida have the highest crime rate in USA? Look at stats!

Which variety are you saying is patented? The TR Hovey?
-
Wow, that gives me inspiration. Thanks for the photos. Here are mine. ;D Quite a ways to go. BTW, the Hawaiian papayas are delicious. I only buy those. I don't like the taste of the widely available Mexican papayas too much, very bland.

I thought the only way to get a true TR Hovey was by a tissue culture.

I have been looking for some patent information on the variety but I can't seem to find anything. Does it go by any other names? Is TR Hovey just the name it sells under but it has a number or something it officially goes by? Anyone know?

Yes,
In certain cases you may be able to get a true tr hovey, grafted, or from an isolated tree possibly...but yes, only way I know how to get true TR hovey is tissue cultured!!!
Thanks!
-
Don't understand why the only way to get true TR Hovey papaya, which i've never heard of, is from tissue culture? If it's a hybrid then it should be possible to get the hybrid seed.

Thanks Reb and John for the TR Hovey pics. Still got my ebay TR Hovey's in their teeny pots, and will plant after the cold departs. The leaves look quite different from yours, but i think that's because of their immaturity.....different lobage....
