Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planting Newly Grafted Tree in Ground
« on: June 06, 2021, 02:30:10 PM »
Good Morning All,

I am not sure if this has been asked but was wondering if a newly grafted tree can be planted in ground before the graft takes?
I am wanting to plant a Avocado tree in ground before the dog days of summer get here.  I have several grafts on a rootstock avocado tree that haven’t quite taken.
Should I wait?
Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

I was hoping to make this trip when the mongo season in full harvest but with my luck,  my daughters cheer team was invited to this early competition.
Coming from Southern California,  it’s a treat for them.
I’m hoping that I can get lucky and have a treat for myself as well...lol.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya ID
« on: November 27, 2018, 09:22:27 PM »
Hello Everyone,

So I was given a pair of cherimoya fruit by my uncle who has a huge tree.
This will be my first taste of this fruit which I hear so much about so I’m very excited to finally try it.
I was wondering if anyone can help in identifying the variety as he doesn’t know which it is.
I know that it might be a bit difficult to ID from a picture but I thought I’d try.
If I like it,  I would like to plant the seeds.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Here are a few pictures

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kesar Mangos
« on: July 20, 2018, 05:44:28 PM »
Stopped by Pioneer ash and Carry today hoping to buy some India variety Mangos.
Unfortunately At this time,  they only had green mangos which a worker said from Mexico...nice lrg mangos... sold individually and Lrg Kent Mangos 6 to a box.  The price was not listed so I passed on them and purchased several green mangos.
Still wanting to get some India variety mangos,  I decided to stop at Surati Cash and Carry diagonally across the street from Pioneer cash and carry.  They too only had the Kent Mangos from Mexico for $5.99 but speaking to the owner, he informed me that he was receiving a shipment of Kesar mangos later today around 4pm. He said he was only receiving 20 boxes and that they would go fast so wanted to share the info for all you India mango aficionados.

Citrus General Discussion / Mexican lemon tree Advice
« on: July 19, 2018, 07:07:35 PM »
I need some help....advice on what I might need to do to get my Mexican Lemon tree to grow leaves.
The tree is still growing.... slowly that is but it doesn’t seem to grow any leaves on the lower branches.
I hate seeing it like this.  Is there anything I can do or nutrients I can give it to help it grow more leaves?
Here are a few pictures...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rabbit or Squirrel or Skunk
« on: June 17, 2018, 03:57:56 PM »
Came home today from a family getaway to find 3 mango seedlings that had just started to grow half eaten.   A couple of other mango seedlings that are a little bigger had the leaves eaten.
Also a couple of grafts that I did had been gnawed on.
So I’m curious as to what animal did this?
I know that there is a rabbit that has been hanging around eating the green grass, as well as a ground squirrel that has been running around during the day.
At night I have seen a skunk searching for food.
I’d like to get rid of the one that’s doing the damage but not sure which one it is.
Has anyone had this happen and know who the culprit is?  Which one of these 3 animals eats mango leaves and would try to eat a scion?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango ID help
« on: June 01, 2018, 04:18:27 PM »
I was wondering if someone can help in ID’ing his mango.
It was given to me buy a friend.  She informed me that it came from a tree grown from seed.  The mango came from Mexico and that it is called: mango barranca in Mexico.
I asked her if it was another known Mexican mango they call corriente and she said that it wasn’t.
I then told her that it looks like Manila or Ataulfo.  She said it was neither.
The taste was a mellow taste.  Not to sweet and had no tartness to it.  Kind if fibrous.
And it was a small mango.  The seed was almost as big as the mango.
Here are a pair of pictures of the mango, and several of the poly embryonic seed...
As you can see from pictures 5 and 12,  the seed is small,  ids say 2”

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soil for Mango trees
« on: May 31, 2018, 01:11:50 AM »
In Covina, where I live,  the soil is not all that great.
I am thinking of amending a mixture of soil for my Mango trees.
I am going to add:
Fish Bone meal
High phosphorus Bat Guano
Blood meal
Oyster shell
Kelp meal
Epsom salt
Dolomite Lime
Azomite
Powdered Humic Acid
Worm castings
High Quality Potting soil with mycorrhizae
Peat moss
Perlite
I have made a mixture similar to this for my citrus trees and it really helped them grow strong.
One question I have is will this soil be to hot for mango trees?
Your thoughts and advice are appreciated

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Type of Mango Seed
« on: April 13, 2018, 12:41:52 AM »

I was wondering if anyone can help me in identifying these seeds.
The first picture.  Seed came fro a mango that was give to me.  They didn’t know the type.  To me it looked like a Haden or Tommy Adkins... maybe a Glen.  The taste was sweet,  with a hint of peach flavor.
Not sure which it would be.  It just looked like one of those varieties to me.  Could be wrong.

The second seed picture.  This mango was also given to me.  I believe it was either a Kent or Keitt.
The mangos were purchased at Costco.
I figured that I would germinate and plant, but now I’m curious on what I have.

If anyone has any idea,  I’d appreciate the help.
Thanks.
