« on: April 16, 2016, 10:52:21 PM »
I will send Lemon Zest mango budwood to anyone outside of the US for free, just pay the cost of shipping.

For anyone in the US, I'll charge $1 per piece of Lemon Zest budwood + cost of shipping.

If you're in CA and renounce all Cali cultivars I'll send you the budwood for only the cost of shipping.

Edit: No more budwood available for now. I'll post again in a few weeks.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Where to buy buddy tape?
« on: April 06, 2016, 09:55:40 PM »
Anyone know the best place to buy buddy tape online? I ran out of buddy tape today while grafting and I had to use parafilm for the first time in a long while and I realized how much better buddy tape really is. I bought from Behl a few years back but I'm not sure if he is still selling it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / One time use Chelated Iron EDDHA
« on: February 13, 2016, 03:29:23 PM »
I only have one or two trees that have iron issues that I need to drench with EDDHA chelated iron, so it doesn't make sense for me to buy an entire container that I would have to store for months or years. I found a small package on ebay for about $5 that mixes into 5 liters of water. It's perfect for a few trees without ending up with another container of fertilizer in my garage.

Heres a link to what I bought: http://r.ebay.com/B5CMqV
Shipping from Spain only took a week.

I figured it may be useful to other members.

I heard Chris Rollins was doing a presentation last night at the PBRFC about his 34 years at the Fruit & Spice Park, so I decided to check it out. On a side note, neither the RFC's facebook page or website had any information about the meeting or if Chris was actually speaking last night so I took the chance in case he actually was. The lack of advertising for his presentation probably explains the relatively low turnout. It may also explain the low membership for this year that the RFC's treasurer mentioned. They really need to work on getting the word out about speakers.

His presentation was excellent. Lots of great pictures and information. I think he's going around FL doing presentations at different RFCs this month.

The reason for his post is due to a suggestion he made last night. He suggested that the RFCs start back doing seedling fruit contests for the less common fruit such as jackfruit. Jackfruit is relatively new to S FL and good varieties are even newer. I think it makes a lot of sense to have contests where anyone can bring their fruit from their seedling trees to be judged and possibly become a new cultivar that is propagated.

Fairchilds had their jackfruit festival but the problem with that is that they really only push their own cultivars and I think it should be more inclusive than that.

What other fruit contests do you think would be worthwhile?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Australian Jackfruit Seedlings Update 2016
« on: January 15, 2016, 06:20:23 PM »
Around 2012 I received some seeds of the Berry and Amber jackfruits from Australia and I planted them all and shared them out to many different people in South Florida. I only had one space for a jackfruit so I planted a Berry seedlings in my yard. I didn't actually plant out the seedling until 2014 so it was sitting in a container for around 2 years. I checked it today and I saw its first male flower. Hopefully it will have some females soon.

Can everyone else that I've shared the Amber and Berry jackfruit seedlings with reply to this post as well regarding how your tree is doing? Also, others who received the seeds directly from AU themselves, please post how your tree is doing as well.

Please add your city, state, country (if outside of the US), and USDA zone to the "Location" section at the bottom of your profile.

It really helps having that information filled out when it comes to answering a question or just being able to have an idea of how things are grown in different parts of the world without having to research where each member who posted is from.

Thanks!

Grafted Geffner atemoya with a cherimoya cultivar grafted onto it as well. I can't remember what variety of cherimoya was added to it though. The tree has been neglected for a while that's why it's only $20.

You can see the flowers in the second pic.

Pickup only.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jim Johnsons Cold Hardy Mangosteens!!!
« on: December 07, 2015, 08:16:52 PM »
Has anyone tried the new mangosteen varieties introduced by Jim Johnson? They are super cold hardy and can handle down to temps that regular mangosteens can't. I don't have any proof that they are actually any more cold hardy than regular mangosteens, nor does Jim Johnson, but you will have to take his word for it.

You can pre-order them now and maybe in a few years you may get one. They may also not taste as good as regular mangosteens or have any other redeeming quality other than fancy cultivar names and unsubstantiated claims but I do enjoy giving away my money to snake oil salesmen.

I hear its only available to residents of the great state of California, because they are the only ones who will believe the grandiose statements of the great JJ.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical Acres Farm Visit 11/23/2015
« on: November 30, 2015, 01:53:12 PM »
I stopped by Squam's place last week and I saw a few of his mango trees already had large fruit for this time of the year. He had a Rosigold with fruit that will probably be ready in January, and a Francis Hargrave with fruit that would probably be ready in March or April. For those not familiar with Tropical Acres Farms in West Palm Beach, here is a link to his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TropicalAcresFarms/

I forgot to take a pic of the Rosigold, but here is a pic of the Frances Hargrave:

I need someone to moderate this board. It's become somewhat of a clusterfuck. Too many posts with improper subjects and pictures that were grabbed from the internet.

Anyone interested? Maybe 10 minutes a day to moderate.
