Post by: simon_grow on May 13, 2016, 04:58:54 PM
I just called the local Indian Supermarkets and they confirmed Indian Mangos will be available later today or tomorrow. If you pick up a case, please report back on quality.

Here you go JF, these Mangos are from Farm Fresh in Little India in Los Angeles. Ashok sent me these pictures and the quality of these Kesars appear to be very good. The late season shipments tend to be poor quality and overripe but these pictures indicate these early season Kesars are very good.

I will update with pictures from the San Diego shipment once I get them tomorrow.

JF is spot on.

On a side note, Mangozz.com just notified me that Mancurad mangos are in season. They are supposed to be the most expensive mango in India.

Wow. Never heard about the mancurad mangoes till now. Just googled them now and found out they do give tough competition to the devgad alphonso which I thought was the most expensive. Never saw mancurad being sold in Mumbai. Maybe its only popular in Goa where it grows specifically. But then also most of Devgad alphonso is exported to western countries. According to one of the fruit vendors 95% of Devgad is exported. Still there are a lot of alphonsos and other mangoes from different areas that flock our markets and one can see mangoes wherever one looks.

Well on the topic of Indian mangoes, how does the Himsagar compare to these other varieties? I've heard that it was the best Indian variety of mango with an ultra fibreless sweet flesh. I'm curios if anybody has tried the Himsagar and Mancurad and has an opinion on which is better.

Out of all the different varieties of Indian Mangos I've tried, Kesar is the best tasting to my specific palate. The Kesars last year were exceptional. I've had Alphonso mangos grown in India from what is considered the best regions of India for growing Alphonse and I still prefer Kesar over Alphonse.

I agree with Simon and know a lot of people that that would too. I think its the lesser fibre in Kesar and also the refreshing taste as compared to Alphonso. I find Alphonso and Kesar to be similar tasting with the latter a bit better. Also my stomach feels heavy after having an Alphonso. When I was young I thought Kesar was the most expensive because it was so good.

The Kesar does well in South Florida; my four-year old tree gave me about 40 great-tasting mangoes last year and is holding on to more than 70 right now. Alphonso does not do well here.  Himsagar looks promising; I have that topworked on one branch of my Keitt and it is holding on to 4 mangoes.

I just picked up three different varieties of Indian Mangos. Alphonse was $40.00 for a box of 10 premium fruit. Kesar was $30.00 for a box of 13 regular grade fruit and Banganpalli was $30.00 for a box of 11 regular grade fruit.

Some boxes of the same variety had more or less fruit depending on the size of the fruit. The cashier at Miramar Cash and Carry once again allowed me to inspect each fruit from each box, which I did, and every fruit looked to be in excellent condition from outward appearance.

I have not eaten any of the fruit yet but I will report back with taste and Brix results once they ripen up. Here are some pictures.

Just picked up 4 cases...just like Simon's at the big Pioneer Cash and Carry in Artesia.
$30 for 12 or 13 kesars.
They had at least  60 cases.

I found one Alphonso mango that was ripe enough to eat and it was delicious. The flesh had a little more fiber near the seed than I recall last year but the rest of the flesh was fiberless. The flesh color was orange and the fruit was very juicy.

It had a sweet base flavor with that classical metallic or piney Indian Mango flavor that I love. The flavor this year was exceptional because I detected just a very minor, almost undetectable hint of acidity which broadened the flavor profile and accentuated the wonderful turpenes associated with Indian Mangos. The closer to the skin you get, the greater the intensity of the turpenes.

I'm not sure if it's the mangos that are tasting different from year to year or if it's my palate that's becoming more sophisticated but I noticed that slight bit of acidity in the Kesars last year and I'm noticing it in the Alphonso's this year. I have not eaten a Kesar yet this year, they should be ripe soon. Here are a few pictures.

Here you go JF:

This Banganpalli was still firm but I couldn't wait any longer so I cut it open. It was obviously not fully ripe as the flesh was yellow with parts of the outer edges just starting to turn a light orange color. As I cut the fruit, I could immediately smell the intensely strong piney resinous turpenes. I would hazard to say that this mango has more of the resinous flavor than Alphonso but the depth of the resinous flavor is stronger in Alphonso.

To elaborate, the Alphonso has a richer, more complex resinous flavor that lingers in my mouth much longer than that of the Banganpalli. The resinous smell and flavor from the Banganpalli is stronger but it is one dimensional. Upon seeing the yellowish flesh color, I was doubtful that the mango would be sweet. I took a Brix reading before tasting the fruit and the fruit only had a Brix reading of 16%.

My hopes were low because in general, I prefer mangos with Brix around 20%, but I was very very pleasantly surprised. After one bite, the intense sweetness made me believe I took a bad Brix reading so I cleaned and calibrated my refractometer and took another reading and it was still 16%. This mango is sweet, I ate an Alphonso yesterday with a Brix reading of 19% but my palate felt that this mango was sweeter.

The sweetness of this mango is one dimensional and tasted a bit like sugarcane juice that was juiced with the skin removed. Without the strong resinous flavor, this mango would not be very good in my honest opinion but the combination it has makes it an excellent mango.

This mango had minimal fiber, some would say non, around the seed. After I ate this mango, I thought to myself how similar it tastes compared to Alphonso. In summary, it was an excellent strong resinous sweet tasting mango that Indian Mango connoisseurs will surely love.

I believe that the complexity of the turpenes and the sugar acid balance of the Alphonso makes it taste less sweet when compared to the Banganpalli although my refractometer tells a different story. Perhaps the sugars from the juice of this slightly underripe fruit is not truely representative of the sugar imbedded in the flesh?

Please keep in mind that this is the first Banganpalli I've had this year and it was slightly underripe. The description I gave above may not be fully representative of what this variety normally tastes like. I should get fully ripe fruit within a day or two.

Here is my first sampling of Kesar for 2016. This mango was perfectly ripe and I could immediately smell the turpenes as soon as the fruit was cut open. This mango is a perfect blend of the best attributes of both Alphonso and Banganpalli. It has an excellent sweetness with a rich deep and complex Indian resin taste. This Kesar had a Brix reading of 19% but it tasted sweeter than the Alphonso. I also felt that the Kesar had a better sweet resinous flavor near the skin than the Alphonso.

This mango is fiberless and so delicious. There was a barely noticeable hint of acidity that made the complex piney flavor that much more enjoyable. This mango is definitely top tier in my book.

Simon,

That Alphonso seems so small...next to Kesar.  And Kesar is small.  Really...there were only 10 premium Alphonso's in that box for $40?
The better deal seems to be with the $30 box of 12-13 regular Kesars.

Yup, only ten Alphonsos in that box for $40. If I were looking for a deal, I would have picked up a box of 18 small Manilla mangos for $6.99, lol. What can I say, I really love mangos and variety is the spice of life. How were the quality of the mangos you picked up?

The kesars I picked up were excellent.  I tried a few that were not optimally ripe and they had a little more tartness than an optimally ripe one.  They were very sweet, but I did not take a brix test.  There is fiber at the seed, but that didn't bother me since there is no fiber everywhere else.  Looks like I will be taking weekly trips to the Indian stores until the season ends.  Haven't seen banganpalli or Alphonso's yet in Artesia stores yet.

Thanks for the report Warren, I ate several underripe mangos yesterday and they were much less sweet and tasty compared to the ripe ones. Here's a picture of the trinity. The Alphonso was almost ripe but the Banganpalli and Kesar needed a couple more days.

Those mangos look beautiful. I like them when they have at least a little tinge of yellow. The Kesar is my favorite Indian mango so far this year. It's amazing how well these mangos ripen even if picked fully green. This attribute is beneficial for shipping and may help prevent fruit thieves from stealing our mangos.

I just bought a box of kesar mango  . It is the most expensive mango box I ever bought in my life $30.00/box. I hope it is good like everybody said . The fruits are still green, so I have to wait a few days . I wonder if I can grow this tree from seed. Do you know where I can find a tree to buy?

Dragon,
Kesar cannot be grown from seed.
In your area, Ong's Nursery and Bonita Creek Nursery are two source for grafted mango trees, but I'm not sure if they have kesar.  You can call them and inquire.

The Kesars I've had are excellent but the later crops do have higher Brix so you are correct JF. the Kesars should reach Brix of 20-21% in the later shipments.

after reading this, I decided to pick up a box of alphonso yesterday from cash&carry. I experience was just horrible. The first one cut up looks nasty inside, so I decided to cut the 2nd, same thing, and went to the 3rd one, same thing. They were all looking nice and golden on the outside. no wrinkles at all.  There were no more golden ripe on in the box, I decide to cut up the 4th one which is a bit green. It looks ok, but it was sour.  Nasty flavors and firm, does not taste like a ripe mango.   anyone else had the same experience or is it just me???  How can you eat this?  $4 for a wasted mango.

All my Alphonsos were in excellent condition but I have received shipments of mangos that looked like that before. You should bring the mangos back to the store where you or your wife got them for a full refund. The Kesars are more consistent and taste better in my opinion.

The (4) Kesars I have ate so far from my box have been uniformly excellent.  I plan on getting another box on Friday. I could eat 3-4 a day and still want more. They are way better than the Mexican Ataulfo we compared them to. Much richer, juicer, better texture and more complex in the flavor profile. I love my Kesars.

The reason I want to try them is that I want to compare the flavor to the tree I have(hopefully, i will get some fruit from them).

I have been enjoying Alphonso and Kesar for the last 3 weeks now. The only way I can get them is through mangozz.com. But they are excellent quality! They have either been perfectly ripe or just a couple of days from perfectly ripe. I have not been at all disappointed.

Good to hear is there any Pakistan mangos available?

I got my Kesar mango haul  yesterday.   I have a buddy that operates a Kesar mango plantation here in the DR. ( about 20,000 trees )  destination northern  US and/or Canadian markets.

I have already had a few, I was concerned they would be watered down, because unlike last year when we had a drought.  this season that had plenty of water and rain.   and so fay the 4 mangoes I have opened were  perfectly evenly ripe throughout , no watering down flavor, and no signs of anthracnose on the fruit. I'll see if I can get a picture up later.    he grows both the regular and "Jumbo Kesar"  they both are identical in every way except size of fruit.  Jumbo being about 50-100% larger in size.

Tropicdude, I think I know whom you are talking about, I believe I've seen the video with your friend and Noris Ledesma. I thought his Kesars were going to be available in the USA last year but I didn't see any in the markets. I'm hoping we will be able to taste his Kesars and Jumbo Kesars soon. I wish him and his operation the best of success!

I honestly didn't check. I was laser focused on the Kesar and Alphonso's :)

Had some Banganapalli yesterday. They were very nice, far better than any Mexican import, but at the same time they don't even begin to approach greatness of top tiers like Lemon Zest. Pretty straight flavor with strong perfume smell.
In 3 weeks Dusheri season starts. As far I'm concerned it's the king of Indian mangoes out of all mainstream Indian varieties. The most complex mango I ever had. 4 flavors in one.

What type of quarantine treatment are they using for US export?

I believe this is the Kesar plantation Tropicdude is referring to. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D2-bJ_0bh1E. I'm interested to know if the fruit will be irradiated or not. I'd love to get my hands on some non irradiated fruit.

I believe he is the same guy... Thanks for the link.

I remember the video with Norris Ledesma that Tropicdude shared. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCnW56M77Yw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCnW56M77Yw)  It's really interesting.
Tropicadude, it would be great to see some pictures.

Simon, thanks for the detailed analysis, and side by side comparisions on the Mangoes. I really like Kesar, just a little more than Alphanso. Haven't tried Banganpalli yet. The Pakistani mangoes haven't hit our stores yet, but should be coming in soon.

Last year he did export ,   and used thermal treatment,  but had quality problems when they arrived.   this was caused by having fruit that were not at the same stage of ripeness, and not sorted by size properly.   in other words some fruit got over cooked.  or had some internal problems.    last years drought, and the fact it was the 1st harvest. meant the fruits were not ripening at the same stage. he had not pruned previously,  I noticed many trees with fruit and flowers simultaneously.  I think he will get everything in sync by next year.

For US market he told me they will be using radiation,    :-\    but for Canada , no treatment is needed.    as for irradiation, he told me about some special requirements and permits from the USDA, and he did get the permits.  next time I talk with him, I'll ask what particular markets they will be heading to.

meanwhile,  all fruit that is ripening now, is going to waste.  ( except what he consumes and gives to friends )  his associates do not want to sell anything locally.  he is trying to convince them to at least donate the fruit.

Our mango festival will be in a couple weeks, I will pay him another visit,  get some pictures or video of the farm.

Thanks for the update Tropicdude! I wish I had the same problem as your friend with too many mangos. It is very interesting that the Jumbo Kesars really look identical to the regular Kesars except they are larger. They even have the same beak at the tip.

I'm eating 1-2 cases of Kesars a week and we have a very large Indian population here in San Diego so I hope your friend can bring his mangos to market here soon. I would assume your friend will get higher, more uniform quality fruit to market with irradiation although I still prefer non irradiated fruit.

Found Banganpalli mangos in Little India (Artesia) today.  From Mangozzz... $40 for a box of 10 (limited supplies...8 boxes)  The quality of the fruit (and taste) was not as good as the kesars a few weeks ago.  But the Banganpalli's were larger than the kesars.  Some of the mangos had black spots.  The guy at Ambala was nice enough to swap bad ones out.  Heard that Banganpalli's are also at Farm Fresh, but couldn't check them out since they closed early (8pm).

I picked up 3 Kesar mangoes at a whole foods in London (plus two unknown polys from a market store)

The Kesar was good, on the small side.  Was it worth $4.50?  Iffy.

Kesar mangos are on sale at Miramar Cash and Carry for $20 for a box of 11 mangos. This batch was harvested in a more ripened state and taste even better and sweeter than the earlier shipments. The mangos are mostly yellow between 50-100% yellow color on the skin and some mangos in the box are ripe to eat. The earlier shipments needed a minimum of several days to ripen.

I cut open one mango and it had a bright orange color and you can immediately smell the sweetness of the mango. It had a Brix of 21% and still had the slight bit of acidity to make it complex and aromatic. These mangos are top notch and I'll probably pick up another box tomorrow.

I just got an email notifying me that North Indian mango season will begin soon. The shipment is expected to leave India on July 2. There will be Dussehri, Langra and Chausa.

Sindhri is also on sale in UK.  Bigger than Kesar and nearly just as good.

I'm sad to announce that Indian mango season has come to an end at Miramar cash and carry and Namaste plaza. This means that mail order is one of our last ways to get them unless you are growing them yourself. There are reports that Pakistani supermarkets may have Indian/Pakistani mangos. I would suggest calling a supermarket before making the trip to pick up Indian Mangos.

since it sounds like Kesar grows well in South Florida I am thinking of buying a grafter tree.

But neither PIN nor Excalibur carry them. Any idea where I can get one?
