Tropical Fruit Discussion / My pickering mango tree is hurt...
« on: April 14, 2019, 09:03:41 AM »
I went out to check on the backyard trees for the first time in a few and noticed black spots and cracks on the tree. Does anyone know what this could be and maybe how to remedy it? Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help identifying a mango type
« on: August 25, 2018, 07:08:02 PM »
I found this tree in a local community (west palm beach,fl) and for the life of me, I cannot for sure ID it. The tree still has green mangoes on it, so its fir sure a late season mango. No fiber, and sweet when right like the one on the right. Can anyone help me, please? I may have to take some branches and attemot a graft.  :-[

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pickering was sweet, now it's not...
« on: July 06, 2017, 08:57:25 PM »
Hello folks. It's been a while. Anyway, my pickering was planted 4 to 5 years ago, and it grows and fruits nicely. First few years it was overwhelmingly sweet, but these last few years, the fruit has been a bit watered down. Has anyone experienced this issue? If so, is there something I can try to remedy this? It's my wife's favorite tree. Thanks

« on: July 28, 2014, 08:22:04 AM »
Hello, fruit loving people. I have a question i'm hoping a pro can help me with.
T-bud grafting is a technique i wish to try. I will be grafting onto an established
Tree. My quesgion is, is it possible to do and if so, how long does it take for the
graft to heal? I will have it wrapped so if it takes, i don't want the film to stop any new groth. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Advice needed from you grafting pros.
« on: September 26, 2013, 10:40:43 PM »
I talked to one of you already by phone, but now i wanted to get some experiences from others.
I'm trying to graft a nam doc mai to one of my in grown trees. I tried a cleft graft but it seems to have failed  ( again ) and looms to be wrinkling. I read that the scion should be swelling as if it were trying to push new growth. But my thing is, my nam doc flushed twice last year. Very late last year from a 3 gal. It's currently still in a pot. Is there a certain time of year these trees push new growth? ( ndm in particular ) and why is more successful? veneer or cleft? Is there one even easier / better? I wanted to try what a member suggested, that being placing the potted tree near the in ground tree. Problem is, the branch i want to graft to is too high and in the center of the tree.

Thank you all for you time and replies.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango tree still in sleepy time?
« on: February 05, 2013, 09:14:38 PM »
Hello all, i have a question. I have a tree that flushed before december and then got planted.
It is a keitt tree. It has been in he ground since november and it has not moved. Not leaves dropping or anything like that. In fact the leaves look very green and healthy. I just bought a huge 7 gallon that looks great. I was gonna give the 3 gallon in the ground to granny that lives behind me and plant the 7 gallon ( 15 gallon ). But i don't want to transplant the tree and it's still not budging.

So i ask if this tree is still dormant? It's too you for fruit. I wanted it to flush more. I guess i will give granny the bigger tree. :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What type for mango trees
« on: December 20, 2012, 09:49:09 PM »
I'm not sure if this question has been answered already but I was wondering if the chlorine filled city water affects the growth of fruit trees such as mangoes. If so, is there anything I can do to help or an additive to use to not hurt the trees so much?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango bloom surprise in Wellington
« on: October 07, 2012, 04:59:17 PM »
This is not my tree, but I happened to have been at work today ( Sunday 10/7/2012 ) and I was searching for my service pedestal in the bushes and came across this mango tree. Is this normal for a tree to be blooming in October? I wonder what kind of tree it could be...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone here familiar with Pettigrew Mango?
« on: September 24, 2012, 08:37:08 PM »
I had a really nice customer at work today who has this tree. He said that is was a nice mango but not popular. I looked it up online and found no information on it. Any of you fine folk know about the the fruit, tree type ( Dwarf, semi, vigorous ) and season? He had no info, just that he bought from someone in loxahatchee.  :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I think I made a costly mistake...Help!
« on: September 21, 2012, 06:28:57 PM »
I acquired a 3 gallon Keitt recently and tipped it to encourage branching in it's pot. I immediately got 7 new shoots coming up. Well, I let it stay out in the open while at work to get sun and it has been doing great. I forgot to protect the tree at night from any possible heavu rain. Mom in law moves it in case of afternoon rain but a few nights ago it rained and I left it out. the soil was heavily soaked. I thought it would drain well but it didn't so I changed the soil and swapped for new, dry soil. Well, I came home today and saw a few of the newly growing leaves downed in the pot. Could I have damaged my last season tree? Thanks in advance...  :-[

I see new branches starting to form on all of the tree ends I tipped. I'm excited for my new trees
and the next mango season. It needs to hurry and get here already. All that is left now is to finalize a spot for the Keitt tree I wish to purchase next. I may have to leave it in a huge pot for a few. Is it possible to leave a Keitt in a pot for about 3 to 5 years and still grow?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / multi variety grafted mango tree.
« on: August 12, 2012, 06:39:04 PM »
Has anyone here have any luck doing this? I'm wondering if there are trees for sale with 3 or more varieties on one tree. Multi-season as well. Or Maybe I should try to do such a thing myself, on a dwarf tree of course. Maybe graft the Vigorous scion branching outward and the actual dwarf stook growing vertically as the main terminal... Any ideas?

I think I'm turning into some fruit tree maniac.  :o

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Branching after Pruning / Tipping
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:50:49 PM »
On average, how long does it tend to take for a young mango tree to respond and grow new branches after tipping? The area where I cut is now looking like it has been burnt. I was just wondering because I am starting to think I did it incorrectly.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hmmm, Wife wants a Neelam, what to do?
« on: August 05, 2012, 07:31:46 PM »
My wife and I were talking about adding a third and final dwarf tree to the back yard. We have the last bit of space for it but I wanted to get a bit of advice on the taste, disease, size, availability, etc... Thanks in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When should I plant my new trees...
« on: August 05, 2012, 11:05:59 AM »
Ok, I just bought my trees from Brooks Tropical Nursery and I am not sure about the weather, temperature is right for pot-to-earth transfer. I mentioned in another post that my wife / mother says it's not good to plant while the sun is out. Well is a blaze at the moment but all is prepped. So when is it a good time to plant? I forget to ask after purchasing the trees. Tend to do that when excited about new stuff ya know. Just wanted to get them home.  8)

Hello all! I am new to the forum, yes, I was referred here by a member and he was very helpful when we spoke. I'm stuck now after speaking with him because I was hell bent on getting a Lancetilla tree and an Avocado tree for my back yard but I wanted dwarf trees because I have a swimming pool in the back.

Well, after reading a few post about the Lance, I saw that many folks are not in favor of it's taste. I have a few ripening now and I have had a few before but I didn't think anything of it. The real reason I wanted it is because I thought it was actually the "Valencia Pride" mango. Which it definitely is not! So now I'm lost because I like the VP mango but I can't stand to have a 50 to 100 foot tree in my back yard... My question is this. How can I get the VP in a true dwarf tree without REALLY having to manage it's size? I have space for 2 trees safely. From pool to neighbors fence is 16 feet + 2 feet of concrete before actual pool water.

What should I do? I have pictures and quicktime video for viewing. Thanks in advance.
