SHV what is your potting soil for the achachas in 15 gals?

I have a couple Achachas that were approximately 4 ft high, nicely branched, doing well in an unheated greenhouse. I slowly introduced them to outdoor shade then full sun over a spring and summer. The new leaves would get trashed whenever there was a windy day under outdoor shade but would grow ok. Once exposed to full sun, the tree would get burnt to hell and new leaves would not fully develop.  Over the following winter, lots of dieback exposed to the elements.  I dug them up and potted them back in the greenhouse to recover and are doing fine.
You can grow them here, but they need a lot of protection from the elements, particularly if you live more inland.  Most seedling Garcinias that I have acquired do just fine in pots in a greenhouse, even with regular mid-high 30F nights. Space will eventually be the concern. Eventually will be a long time based on their slow growth.

Here’s my Achachas pushing all kinds of new growth. Had to tie their heads to the ceiling due to too heavy weight.  Both in 15 gallon pots and loving the desert heat of my greenhouse. 

My Coconut Cream mango is very close to being ready maybe I will pick within the next week.I let this tree hold fruit back in 2021 and it was delicious. I gave it a rest year in 2022 to allow for more vegetative growth and resumed fruiting this year.

I look for the following characteristics to let me know it’s ready: brown stem, lenticels dark and visible, smooth skin, color change from green to yellow, and presence of sugar beads.

To Kaz’s point, there is also a yellow Lisa! I don’t know what happened to the mother tree but I was able to salvage a scion.

I was able to plant the seed from a store-bought mamey, husk and all, and it sprouted pretty quickly. Just in a 1gal container with some big box store container mix and left in the gh.

I can’t really comment on how often his page is updated but I did want to also add on to what Nick said and mention that I placed an order last month and everything went smoothly.

Great list here thanks everyone for sharing. I don’t think I’ve even tasted 10 mango varieties in my life haha but hope to change that soon. Not many options here at the grocery stores or markets in SoCal.

I would say using your hands (with gloves on) and scrub the scales off. Depending on the size of your tree it would be easy enough but if you have a large tree I wouldn’t recommend it. Also, go after the ants. I’ve found that eliminating or reducing ants in the yard helps to keep other pests’ numbers down as well. But ant bait is $$$.

Your fruit has plumb skin like a sugar apple.
It’s an atemoya.

AP is also an atemoya.
Its skin is flat like picture below.




Your fruit is not an AP.

Good looking fruit and taste report, Mike! Did you give your sugarlata a name? The scions you sent me in 2020 are doing okay here in SoCal.
