Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Matoa Seeds
« on: September 04, 2016, 11:55:56 PM »
Hello Friends,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I recently purchased some Matoa/Fijian Longan (Pometia pinnata) seeds from "Nengzie".  They were a combination of Green and Red Matoa Fruit seeds.  They arrived approximately 1 week after they were shipped, and arrived in excellent condition.  They were extremely clean without any remnants of any fruit flesh, and were also very Fresh.

I purchased 20 seeds but received a total of 21 seeds.  As of today, 19 of the 21 seeds have germinated and are approximately 1" inch tall above the soil level.  I think a huge part of my success in germinating these seeds was that they were cleaned extremely well before they were shipped; they were absolutely immaculate.  In my experience with these seeds, they have a very high tendency to Rot if any flesh is left on the seed.

I know that there is a high interest in Matoa/Fijian Longans right now, but there has also been problems with Members receiving fresh seeds, as well as success in germination.  Therefore, I just wanted to let everyone know that I purchased some seeds from "Nengzie", that were extremely fresh, super clean, and had a very high rate of Germination.

I will post some pics in the next few days.

Thanks,

Jacob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee Harvest
« on: August 10, 2016, 05:25:13 AM »
Hello Friends,

I wanted to share some pictures of my Lychee trees (Hak Ip & Sweetheart) and this year's Lychee fruit before I harvest.  I am probably going to start harvesting the Hak Ip in the next 2-3 days, and the Sweetheart in about 5-6 days.  I would say I have about 30 lbs of fruit left on the trees this year. It would have been more but my entire family has been coming over to "taste test", and have probably eaten about 5-7 pounds off the trees so far.

"HAK IP" LYCHEE TREE & LYCHEES

"SWEETHEART" LYCHEE TREE & LYCHEES - These Lychees are absolutely huge.  I have never seen Lychees this big before, and I have had Lychees from all over the place.  These pictures really don't do them and their size justice.

Super Big Sweetheart Lychees that are Bigger than Golf Balls, and 1.5 times bigger than the Diameter

After I pick these Lychees, I will take some more pictures so that you can see how truly huge these Sweetheart Lychees are.  They are also absolutely delicious, super sweet......just phenomenal!

Thanks,

Jacob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rollinia Flowering
« on: April 09, 2014, 12:12:02 AM »
Hello Friends,

I have a couple of Rollinia trees; the first being about 10' feet tall in the pot, and the 2nd being about 12' feet tall in the pot.  Luckily for me, they are both flowering this season and will hopefully set and hold fruit as well.  They are both pretty big and could both easily hold a large amount of fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba - Finally Fruiting
« on: March 29, 2014, 07:39:42 PM »
Hello Friends,

Here are a couple pictures of my Fruiting "Sabara" Jaboticaba.  It is in a 45 gallon pot and is really doing Great!  In the Pot, it is about 8' - 8.5' feet tall and about 6' feet wide.   It has fruited before but this is the first time I would consider this as a "crop"  I counted approximately 80 fruit, and even at that seems extremely sparse with room for tons more fruit so I am extremely excited about the prospect of all the fruit when it comes into full production.

Thanks,

Jacob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Surprise
« on: August 12, 2013, 11:58:20 PM »
Hello Friends,

Much to my Surprise, when I got home from work today, there was a box waiting for me that had arrived in the mail.  When I opened the box, I was surprised to find it full of MANGOS!  Someone was kind enough to gather me a bunch of different Mangos and send them to me in the Mail.

The box contained the following varieties:

          1) Valencia Pride
          2) Royal Purple
          3) Tyler
          4) Cannonball
          5) Orange Dream
          6) Purple Apple

I have yet to try any of the Mangos but I will report on the taste as soon as I get into them.

This was an absolute joy and surprise to receive these mangos as I would never get the chance to try any of these varieties.  Living in California, we are extremely limited to just a few varieties, none of which are the ones I received today.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Coconut Cream Mango - Pure Perfection
« on: August 04, 2013, 07:42:31 PM »
Hello Friends,

I recently tasted my first "Coconut Cream" Mango.  My Coconut Cream Mango tree only gave me one mango this year and it was knocked off the tree prematurely so I was fearful that it wouldn't ripen up correctly or would even be edible.  So after about a week on the kitchen counter I was ready to cut into the Mango.  Upon cutting the Mango open, there wasn't a very strong aroma but there was a beautiful deep orange color.  I love to see this color when I cut open a Mango.  Like I said, the Mango was knocked off my tree prematurely and may have produced a much stronger aroma had it been picked at the proper time.  As for the taste, it was absolute perfection.  I love anything Coconut flavored and this Mango tasted so much like Coconut.  I couldn't believe how strong the Coconut flavor was  in this Mango.  It was also completely Fiberless and super Creamy; it felt as though it left a Buttery sensation that coated the inside of my mouth (No Complaints here). There was no chalkiness, woodiness, or even scant fiber. Zill's truly created a Masterpiece.

It was the best Mango I have ever tasted and I am sure that this was not even a "Coconut Cream" Mango at its best.  I am so looking forward to tasting a fully grown and properly ripened Coconut Cream Mango.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Severly Confused Dragon Fruit Plant
« on: August 04, 2013, 07:23:11 PM »
Hello All,

The following pictures are from on of my Dragon Fruit plants that is suffering an Identity Crisis.  It couldn't decide whether it wanted another branch or a flower.  This is the strangest thing I have ever come across with growing Dragon Fruit.

At first the new grow was 100% flower and looked as such.  For that reason, there was nothing unusual at that time so I did not take a picture.

However, as the "Flower" continued to grow, it began to change back into a "Branch".

You can see from the lower portion of the "Branch", that there are what appears to be "Sepals" which should only be growing on "Flowers", but are present on the "Branch" (They are the surviving remnants when it was growing first as a "Flower")

It appears as though the Branch/Flower at this point had transformed from "Flower" back into "Branch", as evidenced by the presence of thorns where once were "Sepals", and then as you follow the progression, back into a "Flower"

Then as you can see from the Pictures, it began changing back into a "Flower"

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New Rainforest Plum and Bacupari
« on: June 07, 2013, 12:03:04 AM »
Hello Friends,

About a month ago, I came across a post that was about 1.5 years old on an obscure Palm Tree Forum that advertised Rainforest Plum trees for sale.  Since the posting was 1.5 years old, I didn't think that there was a chance of them still being available.  Well I guess I got lucky because not only did the individual still have 1 available, but sent me 3 for the price of 1.  He also had a Garcinia gardneriana (Bacupari) available that  I also purchased.  So, I got the 3 Rainforest Plums and a Bacupari for an excellent price.  Here are some pictures of them and a couple of other things going on in my yard.

Rainforest Plum (Eugenia Candolleana)

Bacupari - Super Healthy and Super Deep Green

"Arizona Purple" Dragon Fruit Flowering like crazy.  There is over 15 flowers right now.

"Shangri-La" Mulberry Tree - Super Productive and Huge Mulberries. Some twice as big as a Blackberry

Cherry of the Rio Grande - Just Starting to Fruit

Thanks,

Jacob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help ID this Plant
« on: May 20, 2013, 09:40:21 PM »
Hello Everyone,

Can anyone please help Identify this plant.  The Mature fruit look just like Rainforest Plums (Eugenia candolleana), inside and out with the same looking seeds as well.  Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the mature fruit as it will probably be 1-2 more weeks before they finish ripening.  The mature fruit are the same color and shape as the Rainforest Plum and are fairly sweet with a single seed like that of a Bing Cherry.  Any guesses?

Thanks,

Jacob
