I have 3 small trees, one of them varigated. They give very few fruits but you can eat the leaves or make tea. The leaves have the same antioxidant levels of fruits.  ;)

If you want a live plant, Cistus nursery in Oregon sells them. ForestFarm nursery also sells them sometimes but I don't see them currently listed.

Hi Ed,

You can find plants and seeds at Sacred Succulents in California:

This is great, because I have been looking for info on these a long time. Can anyone please give Zone requirements, and other other basic info as to where they will do well? I have already struggled to keep a bunch of not-quite-tropical plants alive, and at this time am not looking for more. Last I read, it sounded like these are more temperate, really. I live in a perpetually humid, sea-level Zone 11, and wonder if this would really work out for me without a lot of extra care, which I definitely don't have the time for now...

Humidity might be a factor, but temp wise you should be fine. I bought one from Forest Farm in March 2015 and it shot up like a weed, fruited this June/July although the berries were kinda dry and small even for their size. Could be because its young, it doesnt like living in a pot, or maybe I dont water or fertilize enough... either way it survived a mediterranean 10a climate with summer highs of 100+ and winter lows in the mid 30s.

Very good to know! I would be sooo happy to see one "shoot up like a weed" in my yard!

I forgot to mention, though, also that I have very alkaline soil here (because so much of it is coral rock). I supposed these need rich, more acidic soil? I don't mind providing some soil for it, but not to the point that it will die a violent death the second its roots touch a higher PH deeper down.

Can't speak on alkaline soil, mine are all in pots. But our tap water is somewhat alkaline, so far its been fine on hose water. I will say be mindful about pruning yours into a desirable tree shape, I let mine grow wild and its all over the place, branching up, down and sideways

Well all my plants are on ground and the soil here is limestone...
