Please ID these tangerine and grapefruit
« on: December 12, 2018, 02:52:47 PM »
Hi

This tree was here when we bought this house.  I try to save it and grafted couple varieties.  Please ID this tangerine tree and suggest how to increase sweetness.  Last year, fruit was dry and this year fruit is juicer but not sweet.  I did foliar feed and Homedepot citrus fertilizer every 3 months.

edited -  water regular every week from aquarium water.

Here is how it was.

"Tangerine" probably Satsuma mandarin.
Grapefruit very likely to be Melogold or Oroblanco (more likely Oroblanco) because of the large size.

If the Satsuma mandarin tree is not that old, you may have to wait a few more years for the tree to improve in flavor.
It can also help to stop watering the tree right around the time that the growing fruits are sizing up.
Last year you may have waited too long to begin picking the fruits. Sometimes the fruits will be ready to eat before the skin on the outside has finished turning all the way orange. If you fertilized the tree around the same time it was developing fruit, that could have affected development of the fruit and adversely impacted flavor. Fertilizer will divert too much tree growth away from fruit development.

Thank you Socal2warm for your input.  I fertilized when it fruit and maybe water too much.   I did not want to waste water since i have to do water change for my fish tanks.

Both Satsuma and Oroblanco are really good varieties (two of my favorites), so I don't think you will be disappointed.

I forgot to mention you're right about old of the tree.  The trunk is small and only a little over 8 feet tall.
how do you know when grapefruit is good to pick?

Many people let grapefruit hang on the tree until March.  This insures an excellent fruit.   Citrus do not start producing quality fruit, until the tree reaches the age of 5+ years.

It certainly looks like your going a good job caring for your trees.  Congratulations.
