Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need Help to ID This Cherimoya again
« on: February 06, 2024, 04:18:09 PM »
Ok, I will ask again if anyone can help me ID this cherimoya tree and fruit. This is my oldest tree, got a small plant from a worker 25 yrs ago. The tree is super vigorous, has the largest leaves of any annona I have growing. I only found one photo of the fruit from 15 yrs ago. This tree requires hand pollination and I don't pollinate it so not much if any fruits grow on this tree. I'm using it as a strong rootstock tree to graft other varieties.

Here's the only fruit photo I have, and some photos of the leaves and branches.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need Help to ID This Atemoya- Closed - AP
« on: February 04, 2024, 11:00:46 PM »
I looked at some of the Gefner photos people posted and my fruit almost looks just like it.

I bought the Dr. White fruits from Brad and it looks different from the fruits I ate and grafted on my tree a few years ago.

Can you look at my fruit photos (got fruits from a friend) and let me know what variety it is. The person who has the trees does not know the name, just said it was an Atemoya with good size fruits which tastes good.

I found a person who has an older guava tree that has some nice fruits, ripe ones range from 2"-4" (240 grams). I ate a few smaller fruits earlier in December and it tasted very good. When it is ripe, the flesh is softer, not the crunchy variety. It has a good smell when ripe, and one of the better tasting guava fruits I have tasted.

I went by the tree again and checked the fruits, it has some larger fruits so I got one large fruit (1/2 lb) and these were redish colored skin, like an apple. The fruit was even better than the first fruit I tasted, this one is a winner. Since it is large, there is a lot more flesh to eat.

So, if anyone can identify this variety that would be nice, I plan to graft it on my trees.

Here's photos of the fruit and branch I'm grafting.

Name has been changed to "Sylvia"

I originally came up with Betty just to give it a name, but after talking with the mother tree owner, we changed the name to his wife's name since he tells me she like to eat these guavas. I don't know if he eats any, just that his wife likes it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone Have Ripe Avocados in December?
« on: December 17, 2023, 01:53:19 PM »
Is anyone getting ripe avocados on your trees in Nov-Dec-Jan?

Just curious to know which varieties have ripe fruits in these months. The only ones I grow or know of near me are the three unknown/seedling trees that I get my fruits yearly..

1. HB_Library - avocado variety that is grafted. The scion wood came from the "Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens" about 50 years ago, now the trees are all gone. This variety is unknown, I was told the gardener working there said it tasted very good and grafted it on this mother tree. Fruit is medium size, excellent tasting. Shape similar to a Fuerte or Bacon, but it is not either.
2. Hamada avocado- avocado variety that is grafted. This variety could be a sport/mutation or seedling tree that was grafted onto a nursery tree which is now over 75 years old. One of the largest avocado tree I know of (30-40 feet tall x 30 feet wide). The person who had the original tree said the fruits tasted better than any avocado being sold at the time in the markets, so it was grafted onto this nursery tree. Fruit is medium size, excellent tasting. Shape similar to a Fuerte or Bacon, but it is not either..
3. Derek avocado- unknown source or name. The tree is about 40 years old. Fruit is medium size, shape similar to above fruits.

Please let me know what variety you are growing that are fruiting now, and if you have a photo of the fruit, post below. Thanks.

=============================
Here's the Hamada avocado photo. These fruits have a long shelf life, you can pick the fruits and they will ripen in 4-7 days, but it will keep for up to 10 days and still look good inside.

Skin is thn, but you can peel it if you want to cut it up to look presentable.

Question for you. Have you tried this tropical Strawberry Papaya fruit. I purchased a few fruits from the market, and it is very good tasting to me. Wondering if anyone else has tried this variety and if it is worth growing from seed.

I'll post a few photos later today.

Hi, now that I'm starting to get ripe fruits on my multi-grafted tree, I wondered which yellow sapote is the best tasting to everyone who has a tree.

Here's what I grow, if you know of other yellow sapote then please post the variety name or indicate if it's a seedling tree.

I have not tasted fruits of item 1,3, & 5 yet. So far, the best tasting to me is Younghan's Gold and Clytia.

Please post any photos you might have of your fruits. I will post the photos of the Clytia fruits I ate last week.

Citrus General Discussion / Cocktail Pummelo tree (Mandalo)
« on: October 29, 2023, 07:40:27 PM »
Anyone growing the Cocktail pummelo. If you have it, please post any photos of your fruits now. I wanted to compare notes to see if the fruits looks the same from others that are growing it. My grafted trees seems to show two different fruit skin/rind texture. My large tree has fruits with loose skin and a little bumpy. Another tree I grafted on a Lane Late tree which seemed to be on dwarfing rootstock has smooth skin fruits..

I have an offer for you folks that know how to root guava cuttings.

I haven't really been able to root any guavas and want to learn to do this now.

I just cut back many large branches of a tropical guava, one has the pink flesh and the second one has white/yellow flesh. The tree owner tells me they are both very good tasting guavas.

I'm thinking of grafting some cuttings to my guava trees but don't have many large trees to use branches for grafting. So, if any forum member that has successfully rooted tropical guava cuttings without using any special enclosure or greenhouse can tell me how it's done, I will send you a free rooted cutting if your method works for me.

Here's my request for any member that wants to get in on this offer. If I get the cuttings to root, I will give the first 3 persons who gives me their secret method to successfully root it, and hopefully it will allow other members to try your method.

The requirements to receive a rooted guava are:
1. You must be a forum member for 1 month.
2. Give me your method below, first 3 people that can give me their method that works for me gets a rooted guava (if I'm successful).
3. You will need to pay for the cost to ship it to you. Must be in lower 48 states.

I hope the guava fruits tastes as good as the owner says. She is the person with the Melissa loquat seedling tree which is a winner.

In addition to the free rooted guava you might win, for the first 10 people to make some suggestion on the rooting method will get a free Melissa loquat cutting while supplies last. You must have successfully rooted the guava cuttings to enter below.

=====================================================
I will post a few photos of the guava tree that I took cuttings today.

Please post your method for rooting the cuttings below, if it sounds good to me, I will try it and give updates on the cuttings. I will mail out the Melissa loquat cuttings (free) to the first 10 suggestions for rooting these guavas (just pay $10 for priority mail ship cost).

I started growing some varieties of jujube this year, purchased the Honey Jar, Sugarcane, and grafted about 7 different varieties on these two rootstocks.

I went back to the Mimosa nursery and saw that they had other varieties not there before and all of their trees in pots had many ripe fruits on them. There is a sign saying if you pick the fruit then you buy the tree. Since I wanted to taste these fruit varieties they had (Shanxi Li, Li, & Honey Jar), I had to buy one of each tree.

So, I thought it would be good to do a quick taste test from all the fruits on these trees, plus I know two people with who have an old jujube tree (over 20 yrs old) with ripe fruits now.

Here's the 5 varieties I got to try last week:
1. Li
2. Honey Jar
3. Shanxi Li
4. Unknown#1 -from Gus, large fruits
5. Unknown#2 -from Kelvin, smaller fruits

I didn't realize that Li, and Shanxi Li had one of the largest fruits so there is more to eat. Shanxi Li fruits get up to 2".

The smaller ones, Honey Jar and Unknown#2 are about 3/4" size fruits.

Anyone else growing jujube and can give comments about the taste and describe any flavor/sweetness of the variety your grow?

I should have taken a few photos of the fruits, but I may have eaten most before I took the photos. I sent out these test sample fruits to 3 people and waiting to hear back from them before I say which one I liked the best.
