Gazillion Suriname Cherry
« on: November 24, 2020, 12:48:41 PM »
Here's a few photos of a Zill seedling selection I'm calling "Gazillion".
It fruited some this summer... but now it appears to be exploding with blooms
I've moved it into my Citrus Dome for the winter:

if fruited from seed, how long was it from sowing seed to fruit?

About 3 years from seed... last year it lightly fruited... enough for me to identify it as a dark-fruiting type.
This summer it set some nice fruit... very sweet... with low astringency and Muscadine-ish grape flavor.
Hopefully with all the new blooms it will have a heavy fruit set in the next few weeks.

I noticed my Crimson Tide mother plant is also popping with blooms.
Red fruit... very sweet with a Satsuma-like citrus taste.
It's another seedling selection.
I've been grafting the Crimson Tides this year... as it is a family favorite!

Haven't tried grafting the Gazillion yet... maybe after this fruit set.
So far I'm grafting Crimson Tides just to have backup plants in case something happens to the original.
Black Star with some success too.
Stay tuned!

Very little in both... sort of the citrusy after taste you get from a Satsuma. Really nice.
The Crimson Tide is VERY sweet. Nothing unpleasant at all.
Suriname Cherries were my Gateway Entry into Eugenias!

I’d love to reserve a grafted plant of the Crimson and Gazillion if you have it available. Thanks,

Simon

I hear you Simon... Let's see what next spring brings!
I'll try to graft a few of the Gazillions after they finish fruiting.

Thanks!

Gazillion flower buds are opening... time for a little hand pollination to help the bees:

Had to run the heater in my dome for the past 2 nights to keep Gazillion healthy.
Went down to 25... but it's toasty inside!

Hi Kevin,

Are you planning to sell scions?  I am running out of space here.  Would like to buy some scions to graft on some of the exiting tree here.

Thanks,
Al

I'm sure that can be arranged... right now it's experiencing a mega bloom and hopefully setting fruit.
I'll keep you updated... Thanks.

Gazillion took about 3 years from seed... and yes it is in a container... 20 gallon.
Same with Crimson Tide.
