Noted. Thanks.

Hi,

It is not clear what of the E4 abiu you are selling. Is it a seed, a fruit or a seedling?
If it is a fruit or a seed, I am interested.

Thanks,
Jo

Thanks so much, Frank (FLNative); I just received the package from you. Amazingly quick delivery!
The seeds look great. I am looking forward to having seedlings soon.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Interesting Pineapple shoot
« on: February 27, 2018, 10:15:36 PM »
I have 50 plus pineapple plants and just got something new: one of my plants have a shoot, however it is not a normal looking round flower/shoot. It looks to be elongated and seems to have 5or six parts in one.

My fruit trees are almost all organically grown and since I have gone this way I same to be getting a few surprises from nature: I had a male papaya tree change to female and yield papayas on stems about 18 inches of the tree (they were delicious with only about 4 seeds each), I had a dragon fruit morphed to the dragon vine (tasted the same as normal ones) and now this!

If anyone has any ideas as to what pineapple type fruit I will end up with, please let me know.

Thanks
Jo

I searched the site and found your post of the pineapple you bought in the market back in 2015 and wondered if that is what I am getting?

The picture looks like what we call Cuban oregano. There is also another variety that the edge of the leaf is white.

See the below link which has an article you can check to see if it is the same thing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sugar Apple variety big red ?

I have several trees myself that the fruit actually starts out as green colour when they are small, then slowing turn purple about mid way of development, then finally more red when they are ripe. Maybe some of your trees are doing the same thing?

Believe it or not, my purple matoa plants look like they may actually grow. I know it is still early and anything could happen but as the seed shell broke off all of them at varying stages, I was very doubtful of even seeing leaves. The larger seedling now has two small leaves and was the last to lose its seed case (it broke off last week as well) and the two smaller ones that are just stems (see the two red arrows) are at least still green. I am hoping that I will be able to save at least one of them, if not all three.

I live in the Cayman Islands.

My friend is claiming the fruits are larger than I indicated; he has 5 fruiting trees. The two oldest trees are almost five years old and are about 15 ft tall.

Here are some pictures from a fruit I had when I first got the seedlings from my friend.
I have spoken to him and he has promised to call me when fruits are ready which will be around the end of January to mid February.
I will use another item in the picture to show scale and will measure.

The purple matoa fruit that Cherimoya posted, I think are the same as the seeds that I wrote about in my original post. At least his pictures matches those pictures of the fruits for the seeds I bought.

Believe it or not, the stem from the roots of my two seeds that broke off before the embryonic leaves could pop out are still green showing signs of life. While one seed is still attached to the roots, it does not look like that seed pocket for that will open anytime soon. I am wondering if this is a tree that could possibly continue to grow from the roots?

Mike T,
I think that I may have some variation of your white whale. I have 11 trees right now and I am hoping they will bear within the next year.
I received the seedlings from a friend and his fruits are not quite the baseball size but about or slightly bigger than a golf ball; they have a very thin green skin which on the inside has a little bit of a rind almost like you would find on a tangerine, the flesh is thick and they are very delicious. They are much better than longans or lychees for sure. His trees are currently with blossoms and fruit twice per year. The seedlings grow really fast and his has fruited after just 2 years. See the attached picture of one of my 15 month old trees.

I have many issues with the green iguana.

I find the green iguanas are the worst of any critter even with my agouti problems (agouti is a rodent which is locally called a rabbit as it has similar tendencies) the aqouti  love to half eat the fruit and dig out all of my cassava roots and eat them; what makes the iguanas worse than the agouti is that not only do they eat my fruit but most times they eat most of the blossoms/flowers so the fruit does not even have a chance to set. They also love to eat the leaves on my soursop and sweetsop trees. In the case of the papaya tree, I find that they usually eat the bud out of the tree and that usually kills the tree. With my pumpkin and watermelon, the iguanas eat the blossoms and then just bite of the baby pumpkins/watermelon and leave them on the ground to agitate me!

I don't like killing animals but iguanas are the exception; they do not have any local predators and multiply at a very fast rate : as much as 70 young per hatching period so I have no choice but to kill them whenever I am able to catch them: they move very fast and can be aggressive. I have had a female try to attack our Yorkshire Terrier.

Thanks. I will let you know how the papayas turn out.

Note that they are a pretty decent size already and are only about 2 and 1/2 months old so they still have a while to go. I am hoping for them to be of a good size and quality. I will measure and weight them as well.
