Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Austrailian blood lime question

I read online many months ago about treating citrus greening problem with Aussie lime of some kind.
Would be great if true.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Tree frozen in time.

I have a Maha that did same since Spring.  Cogshall too.
Couple weeks ago i started spraying all trees with Neem 1oz/gal every few days cause i got what looks like Sri Lanka weevils eating Raw Honey.
Did nothing for weevils but Cogs & Maha sprouted it's buds last week! Hurray!  :)

M4 had them popping out in a few directions on each tip.  It's just new leaves.

I can only comment on bananas.  I threw it away after it almost wiped out my 2 dozen trees.
Overnight they turned rubber like & yellow.  My only thought why was super high pH.
Tested it with my pool strips trying to figure what might've caused it, pH was 8+ mixed at proper ratio.
Would lowering pH have prevented it?  Don't know.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can a fresh mulch pile self ignite?
« on: October 29, 2021, 08:00:42 PM »
Thanks all for input, some of you sure get lots of mulch.  Was interesting.
My little 1-2yrd size pile doesn't really steam anymore when i push top off.  Temps are cooler now.
Haven't hosed it yet & only will if it'll help break it down to dirt quicker.
Mostly leaves, can't mulch with it, i'll use it for fill one day.  Was great solution to waste pro not picking up tree debris.  Honestly i'm glad it happened, filling garbage pails, bringing to street, bringing cans back, never again except for junk i rake up.

So far so good for mine.  I do push the top of pile daily as i dump more to keep making room for more.
Didn't see any steam today.  Weird that it becomes very light grey color.  Almost looks ash color.  My stuff is very green, meaning not dry old leaves, suppose that makes difference why it gets hot vs dry stuff?

Spaugh & Roblack, whew- thank you.  I'll continue piling it up.
Bought the rubber hose, needed it to water settle dirt, foliar feed & drench palms in that far corner anyway.  It'll get used.

This morning i saw my fresh brazil pepper tree mulch pile (mostly leaves) steam when i pushed top off with steel rake.  I pushed it to make room for more.
Bought electric chipper, love it, not loving steaming pile.
I'm going out now to buy another 50' garden hose to leave there for wetting it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mangoes that taste like Kent?
« on: September 17, 2021, 11:54:03 AM »
Thanks John.  Found 1 vid of Providence, looked good, juicy, no fiber really, a bit more acid kick (said he) which is fine.  Reminded him of Kent.
Size wise, my Kents are from larger then baseball to almost softball.  This years were huge.

I'll ask nursery maybe next week for Carla or Providence.
I also recently planted peach cobbler, raw honey, cogshall, maha (barely alive but is) & m4 my landscaper took chunk outta trunk but healthy.  Grafts if it breaks in storm.

Wondering how Simon's trees are.

This thread came up in my google search for same question.
I love my Kents, 20yr old tree that i cut at least 8' off every year, deal with anthracnose, but want to add another tree with same taste which varies of course with ripeness stages.
Phoenix (going by the couple reviews i've seen) is close possibly better.
And i'd like it more if slightly earlier season then Kent.
Thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone try neem oil on mango trees?

I'll say if you use it, don't mix copper with it.  I did that once & burned many leaves.  Follow label.
However, i've used it on 2 planted 15gal citrus trees & it certainly helped leaves from getting chewed on for a while.
Dyna-gro brand.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Mangos 2021
« on: July 27, 2021, 07:56:16 AM »
My 1 tree old enough (20yrs) to produce is Kent.  I loved them!
I finish ripe in sun & then put in fridge, eat cold.  Swear some tasted like orange sherbet.
18.5 brix was highest i tested with $20 tool.  Were yum!
Copper spraying often before panicles opened & after pea size certainly was worth it.

2yrs ago i froze some whole, unpeeled.  Mush as they thaw to peel.   Didn't like it.
Now i have halves that i plan on easily chopping into slices & eat while still frozen, before they warm to mush.
Or throw in blender for mixed drinks.

142
I do a quick peel, slice the 2 halves off, eat sides of seed, slide in ziplock.  6 big mango halves per bag.
I got 6 bags cause squirrels told me they were ripe to pick.  Sat in sun a week then froze.

Bananas i got 6 or more bags as well.  Good for 12 months or forever if hungry enough for 1.
Eat them like frozen ice pops.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Rats gone carnivorous
« on: June 29, 2021, 08:06:55 AM »
Florida is not infested with rats by any means, at least not my property.
Lived here since early 2000's & saw 1 which actually looked like a big mouse or hamster.
They'd be a bite size snack for gators lol.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Filter for garden hose
« on: June 20, 2021, 09:42:15 AM »
Big box store, whole house filter housing & filter, brass adapters for gardenhose thread, under $100.
I've done it for washing car but restricted flow so removed it.  Get housing with bracket so u can mount it to house.
Many filter elements to chose from.
Easy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2021 Mango Season (Florida)
« on: June 09, 2021, 02:40:25 PM »
Picked these this morning when i heard mower coming.  Kent, felt like 8lbs all 4.

Ate 1 other day i knocked off topping tree last month during cool weather.  Left in sun a week, was good!

146
And back to original question, don't know.  I'll probably make a chip pile of branches with needles & another from trunk.

147
Tested bark from my old pine tree.
2 notes- it soaked almost twice as long as big box bark,
And mine is like those yummy flaky biscuits vs regular biscuits.  Perhaps bark under flaky layers is more like regular biscuits, i didn't have a chisel or screwdriver in hand.
To be accurate, they'd both have to be ground, weighed & soak for same time in water.

148
I tested hand pruners which led to garbage pails of non bloom mango branches of all sizes.

I'll test actual bark from my tree tomorrow after soaking in water 20min & longer.
I retested pictured bark next morning & pH was way below range of test strip.
I put it around all my planted trees.  I hope mangos like acid.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are These Anything Worthwhile?
« on: May 21, 2021, 09:09:20 PM »
Mike T,  i wish we here in FL got the nice ones you mention.

I myself likely have tree that started thread.  City gave them out to replace citrus trees they came on property & removed 10-15yrs ago.

Honestly, if you care for this tree, it does great.. Can shape it like umbrella.  Great for shade break when it's 95F & you're pruning other trees.

Wish i still had the lime & orange tree but insects & diseases also get imported.

Mike, i read Austrian Lime is effective fighting "citrus greening".  Do you know anything about it?

150
I can't check N levels, i can check pH which i did the other day of uncolored no additives (so they say) pine bark nuggets from big box store.  Main reason for getting it was to put around my new mango trees to keep landscaper away.

I tested city water, added bark, tested again 20 min later.  I have to repeat this with bark from my pine tree.  I'll grab some off tree shortly.  I like how low pH got.  Save my sulfur.
