Tropical Fruit Discussion / Potassium Sulfate
« on: January 21, 2023, 05:42:34 PM »
Hi all.  I've read study that yield increased best with 1% foliar applications (compared to .5 or none) and mentioned the sulfur helped fight fungus.

Anyone try this?  I sprayed my big old Kent, no panicles yet, did make leaves nice dark green.
I use copper occasionally when Anthracnose starts getting bad.

Would a drench help as well?

Also wonder if it would help fight powdery mildew or hurt & chase away pollinators?
Sulfur's much harder for me to apply.

Thanks,
Ed

Not good.  Wondering if weevils eating roots is why my mango trees & 2 citrus didn't take off & some paused for a year & 3 of them at the moment aren't growing much.

They are sri lanka, info on them here..
https://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/orn/sri_lankan_weevil.htm

I'll lightly spray tomorrow, tempted to drench 3 trees & let them hold 1 fruit each if they produce, still young anyway.  Looks like we all need to rid these things or am i getting too anxious?

Thank you, i visited website, emailed David & he replied quick.
Tomorrow i'll try taking photo of one for him.  Leaf notcher or sri lanka.
I see how nematodes would be better then Bifen spray if roots are getting munched on.
Light spray of Bifen would stop leaf munching quick though.

Appreciate everyones input.
Galatians522, i see there's a few different kinds of Nematodes.  They look to be worth trying.  Know which one  to get?

Nematodes & chickens oh my!  :)
Googled nematodes, i have to digest that one a while.  They're tiny.
Chickens would be cool if i had extra time on my hands & ate eggs more often.
Bifenthrin yes 1oz/gal but i'd feel safer 1/4 that.  It's likely used on everything non-organic but i'd feel better using less on food trees.  1oz for ants around house outside yes sir.
Spinosad- haven't tried yet, have it, didn't work very well on citrus leaf minors, only tried once.
Neem oil- looks great on trees at first, but (for me) starts looking dirty for the rest of its life on tree.

Looks like Sri Lanka variety eating my mango & citrus tree leaves.
I never saw them till a couple yrs ago.
Besides Bifenthrin, any other treatments ya'll have success with?
I haven't sprayed anything yet, will try the Bifenthrin at 1/4 oz/gal if nothing else works.

Thanks,
Ed

Har & Oolie, just want to thank you for replies to my question.  I wrote long reply a month ago but lost it when my failing modem router's wifi cut out.  Had me po'd.  Replaced it since.
The splits on trunk were sticky but not oozing so i let it be.  I think they're ok.

I did see leaves on some after tropical storm winds get mild damage.  Are mango trees subject to wind burn?  Wondered after seeing a previous persons question.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pine Bark Mulch and Tropical Fruit Trees
« on: November 18, 2022, 11:14:16 AM »
Let us know how it works out.  I loved it at first, low pH & look was nice.
Might've been my fault, i let a few bags sit outside before use for a couple months.
When i dumped them, they were loaded with 1,000's of termites.  Bags i used within a few days of buying, didn't.

Since then, i removed all from new tree planters & added couple inches of sandy yard soil i dug.
Trees are much happier, roots might've been rotting from the pine bark.

Just telling ya'll my experience, best of luck, let us know.

Careful- i used the natural nuggets from big box store.
Long story short, i raked up all i could & yard is loaded with termites.  Everywhere.
I'll never ever buy them again.  Was used for top dressing all my mango trees.  Disaster.

Wishing luck to our citrus growers.  I'm sure they'll be tired tonight.

Har, photos of bark splits taken today.  I applied roughly 2 cups Gypsum each tree before all this good rain.
I really don't want to paint them white, does the paint itself help hold moisture in?  I'd use brown if so.
Also wondering if i painted with Gypsum & water, would it soak in & help soften bark?
I have Neem, oil would soften but might be like baby oil to us.  Thoughts?

Leaf tip burn was from me learning that 1oz of micros per gallon was too much.  1/2oz better, lesson learned.

Thank you,
Ed

Har, a whitewashing 101 video would be great!
I know nothing about it, what to buy or mix, how it helps, blocking sunlight, reducing heat, soften bark?

I thought of gypsum wash cause we know gypsum helps fruit expand without splitting.
But it'd be brown, not light reflective & who knows if it would absorb & help.

Do the splits/cracks heal over time when applying gypsum to soil?
I'll take a few pictures tomorrow.

Thank you.

Har, i realize a soil test is route i should take before adding manganese sulfate.  Leaves don't show any signs of deficiency of it.  What i have is 32% manganese, 56% sulfate.  A little goes a long way by what i've read.

Calcium deficiency i do have it appears on those young trees, if what i researched is correct.
Trunk bark has tiny cracks as if dry old skin.  Some branches where they attach to trunk look to have crack around them too. I applied gypsum.

Wondering if i mix some with water & paint on with brush, would that help?  Hurt?

Thanks,
Ed

Har, thank you.  Manganese will be next question, after i see tomorrow what % i bought a couple yrs ago.  Never opened it, life's been busy.  Hat's off to ya for all you do.  I must've watched 100 tt vids since starting my mango quest.  Good job.

I had similar happen from support stick.  Rubbed trunk, got infected, ng,
Removed stick, cut trunk off below area, was above graft (as yours looks) & grew back.
Orange sherbet.  It's currently in pot cause i didn't expect it to survive & put m4 in its place.

I will never buy another tree without inspecting trunk & remove stick soon as its home.

Fertilizer question.
Mr Har, wondering if mixing these 2 fertilizers 1:1 would be best for my trees in ground almost 2yrs.
12-8-6 is for citrus, 6-3-16 for bananas.  Micros combined look ok?  Good amount of Manganese in 12-8-6.
And Calcium question, is 1/3rd a good ratio to add say, 1lb Ca for every 3lbs of fertilizer?  Sandy soil.

Trees i picked based on members here, tt tasting table vids & my preferences are Peach Cobbler, Phoenix, M4, Maha, Cogshall.  Pickering & Raw Honey not in view.

Thank you,
Ed

Yesterday & today looked like hurricane for a few minutes.
Fertilized all my Arecas this morn.  Certainly got watered in lol.
Didn't have time to fert small mangos, bananas & citrus.  Tomorrow.
Making use of the rain.  We needed it.
My Kent has fruit.  If varmints leave it be, i wait till they fall.  Look every morning.  None yet.  Only has 14.  Last yr was triple that.

I came looking for good fig & tomato fert, interesting read.
I pumped my septic almost 20yrs ago.  Nobody had sewer in the early days & beach water was more pretty color when you drove past.

Would a spray & drench of this help (i know it's late) my Flame grapefruit & Ortanique orange?

« on: April 07, 2022, 05:46:40 PM »
Thanks for info gents.  I've never grafted, watched many great vids though.
It's on hold, I have mold growing on so many trees that I haven't even watered much.
Grafting quest will continue a month or so from now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango scion question

Can scions be made from growth between nodes?
Planning on cutting a couple nodes down on some varieties for lower branching.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Major mango bloom
« on: March 23, 2022, 02:22:24 PM »
My big old tree (Kent) has 2 small mangos hanging on.  Other panicles got hit with mildew & anthracnose except for a few.  Rain made it put out leaves on 3/4 the tree.
This morn I carefully pruned a good 50lbs of branches, another 50-100 to go.
Thinking if I get sun on panicles, they'll be less disease prone.  No idea but might as well before heat comes.

99
Lots of rain during our dry season got it growing leaves not buds on 1/2 the tree, and many panicles got hit with powdery mildew & anthracnose.  I did spray copper but not as often as last yr.  Life got busy.
Anyone else have a Kent not so hot this yr?  Last yr was great, much less rain, guess I'll be happy & average it in.

I can't comment on flowering, but read foliar potassium sulfate increased fruit yield in a study or 2.
