I have tried the Hass and Florida Hass here in Florida 9b with predictable pi$$ poor results.  At Fruitscapes today Steve was suggesting I try growing their special "Super Hass" variety which he insisted does well in SW Florida and tastes exactly like a Hass.  Sorry to be being skeptical, but I have heard similar claims before.  Can anyone verify whether Super Hass is cold tolerant and really fruits well here? Thanks.

BTW: They had M-4, Triple Sec (Seacrest), Lemon Zest, Orange Sherbert trees and many others.  Mango fruit selection wasn't that great. Healthy looking 3 Gallon mango trees selection tho for $40.

Also John Painter is closed on Mondays if anyone wants to know.

Blessed be the man who plants a tree knowing he will never live to enjoy it's fruit or shade.

Looks like Super Hass grow well in FL, and taste like Hass, but the fruit ripening is not even:

http://mrfcarticles.blogspot.com/2015/11/super-hass.html

I was on the mission to look for creamy avocado that do well in FL, but Wurtz was suggested to me, and that's what I'm growing now. Still waiting for my avocado to be ready to picked. It's a very promising avocado if you want to look into it.

Well that's extremely helpful??!!??

I admit that I'm also skeptical, but Steve has never lied to me or misled me a couple of dozen trees later.

They jumped the gun, uneven ripening and a flop.

How old are your trees beefyboy. Mine is 5 years and has good fruit. No ripening problems. This year it is only holding 1 fruit. A lot of fruit drop, Maybe because of the 26 inches of rain in may.

I'm not following.... How is it you never got to try the fruit if they were ultra productive?  I need to replace 2 trees myself.

While in containers for a couple years they put out a few fruits but due to drought stress or animals I never got to taste the fruit.  The SH trees were planted August 2017.  Once in ground they grew rapidly and set a huge crop maybe 3 or 4 dozen.  The fruits grew to about the size of my fists and then the trees perished from what I suspect was an overdose of nitrogen in conjunction with some other environmental factors.

Don't now how well is Wurtz compare to Super Hass. I must be lucky if a 5 years old Super Hass only hold 1 fruit this year while my 2 year old Wurtz hold 10 since we get the similar amount of rain in May:

I still haven't taste the Wurtz yet but as far as I know it's quite cold tolerance.

Well please keep us up to date.  I have a productive Mexican Avocado, the the fruit is pretty bland.  I also made the mistake of planting a Haas before researching it more thoroughly.  Technically, it's rated for my zone, but you know the rest.

Wurtz is one that I'm considering, but I hear very different reviews of it.  Some say it's great, some say bland.

So seriously, give us an update when you can.

The Wurtz avocado won't be mature until October/November (so I was told). They have been hanging on the tree since May. I will be sure to update this post when I finally eat the Wurtz avocado.

Thanks to both of you.

I have a feeling the variability of Wurtz is based on location.  I have had them off of different trees in Central Palm Beach County and quality is excellent.

I picked my first Super Haas last week and after letting it ripen for about a full week I tried my first one today.

It was not all all watery like some Florida avocados. It had a creamy texture that I could not tell apart from a store bought Haas. The skin was a bit thinner but easy to scoop.

This was definitely a winner. Beautiful tree and beautiful clean fruit.

Many of the avocados on the tree are bigger than a store bought Haas and nearly all of them started turning black about a month ago. By now about 75% of them have turned from green to black on the tree.

I bought the tree as a 25 gallon this past spring with small fruit already on it.

PS. Coach if you want one let me know and you can swing by and get one to try.

I'm so jealous! You want to sell / trade budsticks? I have the Florida Hass, which is excellent, but doesn't turn black like that.

Any idea on its cold hardiness? Assuming it’s not great if anything like Florida Hass.

Anyone here try the super Hass and also a nishikawa? I bought a super Hass but it got root rot. It’s staring to grow back but if it doesnt make it I was going to get a nishikawa as the replacement.

Which one taste better? I like the creamy fatty avocados. Not the watery ones.

I found a Nishikawa and snagged it.  But, it was just a couple of weeks ago and it's still in the pot.  It's from Top Tropical, and I quarantine everything I get from them as much of their stuff has an infestation, and most of it isn't very healthy.  They get GREAT selections, but for some reason, most of it isn't very healthy.

We’re growing Super Hass (“Oolala”) and Nishikawa. Both are excellent but I haven’t tasted them next to each other to compare. Our Nishikawa has no fruit this year but Supwr Hass has some after taking last year off.

Do you not have any Nishikawa this year because it is too young to support fruit or did it bear fruit last year but not this year?

Had some fruit last year but none this year. It’s not a big tree and has grown slowly.

Cookie Monster getting excited!

I moved to FL from socal 13+ years ago -- with literally miles of haas avocado groves within walking distance from my house (right next to the Calavo packing house). Still have not adapted to the horrible west indian avocadoes that are grown here. Over the years, I've found a couple that I can down without retching (usually the ones with giant seeds and thin flesh -- which seems to concentrate the flavor a little).

Enjoyed a delicious Super Hass from our tree this morning. You would be hard pressed to tell the difference between this and regular Hass:

Just curious. Are the cultivars like brogdon or winter Mexican which appear to have some success in Central FL very much different in quality from Hass? They are definitely not watercados.

I just snagged a FL Super Hass Saturday, nice, healthy specimen from Fruitscapes on Bokeelia.  What I didn't know is they have Nishikawa trees there also, I wish I had bought mine there.  Their stuff is so much better quality than Top Tropicals, and much cheaper.

I’m in Parrish Florida.
Have super hass that is about 4 years with over 100 fruit, I keep it at about 7’x6’ the trunk is about 5”to 6” in diameter it when thru the hurricane last year of 2022 and our winter and is very well. The prior year due to the hard freeze we had it had 25 avocados.

I've had a super haas in the ground about 2 years now that was purchased as a 15 gal. The freeze a couple years ago burnt some of the tips and the main stalk at the top. It's rebounded nicely and is holding around 40 fruit now. Should I expect them to turn black on the tree or is that something that happens during the ripening process? I'm just east of Tampa if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance

I usually picked them in November when they star to turn black, I haven't had any issues with ripening. They taste better than the regular store hass. Harvesting is just around the corner.
