What I picked yesterday
« on: November 08, 2012, 10:07:59 AM »
Just want to share with  you some pics of my yard plus some of the fruits that I picked from it and some that I picked from Eunice's. Hope you like them.

Updated: Unknown banana thought to be Manzanos earlier this week

Pomegrantes

My everbearing fig tree. It is grafted with three or four varieties of figs. The ones I remember are Panache Tiger Fig, and Kadota.

My Platano Burros continue to produce.

Sugar Canes. I know some are old but I like the look.

What I picked yesterday. Poms, a small Cherimoya, some figs, Manzanos, and a Sweet Tart mango that the gardener knocked off. >:(

Some of the fruits that I picked from Eunice's place. Carambola, Carnival Mango, Edwards, Thompson, and Manila. Thanx Eunice and JF.

Carnival mangos up close. Gorgeous fruit.

Hope you enjoy these pics from SoCal.

Great pics!  8) Your pics of the manzano bananas gives me some confidence that my banana is manzano. They are small and have a waxy film over the skin that gives it a silvery, kinda blueish, appearance from a distance, but it looks green up close. I'll see if I can take up close pics later today. I bought the original pup that came from a manzano banana tree that hasn't given bananas yet, hence my uncertainty. :)

Thank you all for the compliments. It has been hard but it is definitely rewarding. There is nothing like enjoying the fruits of our own labor.

Tomas I will probably submit one of the pics. Thanx for the reminder.

Tropicalgrower89 I was too quick to call the bananas Manzanos. My Mom told me that  they were and when I ate them straight from the tree they tasted a bit like Manzano. If she tasted one today, she would not say they are Manzanos. Today after I tasted one, it is not. They are very sweet with some tartness with a slight hint of apple taste. As they ripen more they lose the apple -ish taste and they get more sweeter and less tart. My experience with the Manzanos is that as they ripen more, the apple-ish taste gets more intense. Also, the Manzanos are a bit thicker that these however, I thought the fruit was excellent. So definitely not a Manzano, although I was hoping it was. I have two Manzanos on the ground. I will update as soon as they fruit. Thanx again.

Things are lookin' smashing, Mr. Bond!

Those bananas look amazing (this said by a NON-banana lover!)

Boy I haven't had a ripe fig in I dont' know how long - by the way,
how are any or all of your new mango grafts doing?  I saw you were pretty good
at grafting and were just starting with mangoes a few months ago...

The bananas that you thought were manzano look like namwah. Have you looked up namwah banana in google images? It matches the bananas you picked. It could also be misi-luki.

Mango perro, thanx for the kind words. This year the weather has cooperated and the plants are coming along quite nicely. Grafting mangoes can't be that hard so I must be doing something wrong. Out of all of the grafts that I have done only one took and it is doing quite well. It is a Dot. These figs are like eating honey. This time of the year they don't grow as big and they taste better. I have added a lot plants since the last time you came by. As always, you are welcome to visit.

MarinFLa and Steven, thanx for the compliments. The poms this year taste better than last year however the production was less. Last year it was almost too much. This year the taste is very tart and sweet just like I like them.

Alexi, it could be, however I have a Nanwah that has not fruited yet but the tree does not look anything like this one. This one is a bit tall. It could be Misi Luki although I am not familiar with the Misi Luki variety. One thing I can tell you, they are very tasty and just the right size.

Thanx Ethan. I responded to your p.m. I thought the Edwards mango was good then we tried a Manila mango straight from the tree and it was amazing. Ask JF, the nice flavor took us by surprise. The mango was yellow with a red blush on top. I even took one away from a squirrel trying to steal one. First time I see squirrels eating or trying to eat mangoes. Hopefully JF has some ripe Manilas and he can show some pics.

Yard looks amazing 007, congrats on the harvest too!

Nice haul!
Your fig looks particularly mouth watering. You are so lucky to not live in Fruit Fly country and have great home grown figs like that.
I might have to do a spring update soon.

Rob gave me + friends a nice tour too the day I bought a Coc (Vietnamese) mango at Excalibur
Cubano--- I always cut the red banana blossom off after all the bananas have formed. I was told they take juices from the bananas that are trying to get ripe.

I was not aware until I was told a few years ago----  Once the banana bunch has gotten ripe and you have harvested it, cut the stalk down. I try to cut close to ground as possible. Chop up the stalk with machete and use it to mulch your banana patch or your mangoes. I usually mulch mangoes with it

Do these look like manzano?  They are just three weeks old, and are about 3-4 inches long.
