has anyone ever fruited a durian in continental USA?
« on: February 21, 2013, 10:48:15 PM »
has anyone fruited a durio in continetal USA?  all the plants i know of died of phytophthera or cold damage.

if  no one has done it yet, we need to have a contest,

where all people have an entry fee of $100, they all get the same batch of seedlings, and the winner (1st to fruition) takes all the $$.

that would be a great contest!

I'd be interested if we all didn't have the same batch of seedlings. We just had to start the seedlings all within the same year and keep a photo log.

Where could we keep the money for the 15 or so years it may take?

I'll hold the money for everyone. I'll make it grow fourfold by investing and imported new species of myrciaria into the U.S. from Brazil. Should be a fine cash crop orchard in 15 years.

put the money in some interest bearing account set up for the contest.

or just let me hold it...  ;D

if everyone had different seedlings(varieties) started at different times, it would be difficult for some to compete.

maybe it should just be a contest for the first person to provide proof of fruiting durian in USA?

doesn't matter if they have a grafted tree they purchased recently, or if it's a seed they've planted.

first to fruition wins

does this say a durian is fruiting in a pot?
http://www.diperta.jabarprov.go.id/index.php/subMenu/informasi/berita/detailberita/398/376

You can see the pot in the bottom of the photo. There are some cultivars of durian that will fruit when very small. For example, i've seen durians here about 5 feet tall full of fruit. That was D-123, which i believe is a type of Chanee durian. So i wouldn't doubt that with special types of grafted durian plants it's possible to fruit them in a large pot.

I would bet that no one has. Fairchild Garden has some a few large Durian trees planted in the ground in the Whitman Pavillion but I doubt they have even flowered.

Jabomano,
Please let me know if I can be of any help with those myrciarias!   8)
By the way, that spiritosantensis is covered with warts!  Next time you come over, you need to wear a special suit to get close to my jabuticabas!  Any progress in resolving the warts issue? Have you found a cure for that?  ;D ;D ;D

I was in the FTG TF pavilion during the chocolate festival, looking up under the mangosteen canopy, seeing forming fruit, and Dr Campbell noticed me and stopped to talk.  I asked about the durians.  He said they never had fruited but he was going to give it his all this year.  Last year they flowered but he thought they did not use the correct technique to pollinate them.

I think that is a great idea! It is super easy to create an escrow account. If no one else wants to do it, I can. And I am definitely in! I really want to have a durian (and mangosteen), and being so close to the ocean, I bet I can do it! :)

Now, what about a mangosteen competition to go along with it? $100 per entry or $175 for both.

You should add a Rambutan and Pulasan to the mix also.

There is a lot of potential for contests, but I think we should stick to 2 annually, otherwise members who might want to participate in all the contests might be tapped out. My vote would be for durian and mangosteen this year, rambutan and pulasan for 2014.

Maybe.  ::) Not rich, but PM me anyway.

But back to the contest- where would the seed lots come from? I have been wanting to try growing durian for a while now, but I've been holding out to see if there is a cultivar that displays resistance to phytophora. Anyone have a candidate?

the person who fruits durian in USA first will probably do it with a container grown specimen.

I bet controlling phytophthera will be easier with a containerized plant, in a green house setting.

I think the three most important factors to consider when trying to get a fruiting durian in Florida is variety, variety and variety.

Yes, yes, yes. Where are they, where are they, where are they? Who's going to cough up those macranthas?  ;)  I suppose graveolens would be worth trying as well?

Looks like they fruited a Honda.  :o
My guess is that Fairchild Pavillion will be the first to fruit durian in Florida. But they have a big head start on all of you and also that is inside a greenhouse, so will that count?

to win, you must be an individual who entered the contest (not a botanical garden) and the fruit grown must be of decent quality!

its not a success if the fruit isn't comparable to the durians we all know and love.

8 durions fruited ( yes , in the past form ) a little further north ( 2 hours driving ) of Puerto Vallarta at sea-level close to San Blas , the land was sold and the new owners cut them down , afraid the falling fruit would hurt their children....

Oh hell...I give up...I've been resisting for about 7yrs...

I'm going to try to fruit a durian now...

What is the easiest one to fruit in a pot?  I don't care too much about cold sensitivity...just tree size...and fungal sensitivity...

Wurian Dizards, please come forward with advice.  I need some assistance.

I'm sure there are other options. I just don't know about them. But i can tell you that i've seen D123 fruit at very early age and when still very small. I think you will have quite a big challenge just getting this one cultivar to Florida. So suggest starting with one.

Ok...D123 sounds like one to grow.

I will probably try a few types...

I wonder how long to fruit from seed?? About 5 - 8 yrs?

and the cold sensitivity? about 39F...and fungus will have it's way??

As i recall the tree i saw of grafted D123 fruited in 4-5 years. Very sensitive to drought.  Fungus should be easy to control in a pot. How much cold they can withstand i don't know. I think it's one that would end up spending a lot of your winter in your greenhouse. Remember that getting a plant to survive and getting it to fruit are 2 very different things. To get it to fruit you don't want to stress the plant out, especially when it's young. Some cultivars are self infertile. Not sure about D123, so it would be good to have a second one.
