Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona Montana as rootstock (mountain soursop)
« on: September 11, 2020, 01:04:28 PM »
I got a few seedlings growing nicely and wanted to see if anyone has some experience using them as rootstock for other annonas.
From what i hear, soursop, rollinia and salzmania works on it.
Hoping some of the more common ones can work too.

52
20 seeds for $22, including shipping in a small flat rate box

the fruits are average.

PM me if you're interested.

53
We have a decent amount of people interested in annonas on the forum so I thought we should start a thread to help identify problems.

I'll go first.
My seedlings fruiting soursop has these brown fuzzy looking things on the underside of the leaves.

Tree seems okay and I don't notice ants crawling up the trunk

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Top working Suggestions
« on: April 30, 2020, 06:23:57 PM »
I'm considering Top Working my NDM tree that's in the front yard right next to my driveway and 20ft away from the street.

I find the NDM to be really messy, it drops the most fruit I've seen compared to my other trees.
As for the flavor, I'm not fond of the Thai flavor and don't want to settle for green mangos either (there is a delicious sweet spot but it is hard to hit)

I'm looking for a tree that:
Relatively easy to pick but not red.
Decent shelf life
Productive
Disease resistance
Doesn't drop a ton of juicy fruit splattering on your driveway and car. (I'm okay with some)
7/10 flavor is fine with me.
Vigor does not matter.

I'm being picky, but with so many mangos to choose from might as well shoot for the moon.

So far what I can think of is Seacrest, Valcarrie, Cecilove and Dupuis.
Am I missing anything obvious?

I already have (Angie, Cac, LZ, OS, FP, Glenn, Venus, Edward, Zinc, Edgar, Taralay, Manalita, Pickering, Nelepetite, Cotton Candy, E4)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Foliar Feeding: Spraying vs Fogging
« on: April 16, 2020, 12:06:50 PM »
Is there a different concentration requirement for a fogger vs a standard sprayer?
I assume not because the amount that stays on the leaf should be the same.
Does anyone have experience with this?

Sale is over.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chop and Drop suggestions
« on: March 18, 2020, 02:15:05 PM »
I no longer have the time to receive a truckload of mulch and wheelbarrow it into my back yard, so I'm looking into growing my own.

Does anyone have any suggestions for chop and drop plant and living ground cover?

I know there is:
Moringa
Mexican Sunflower
Perennial Peanut
Sunshine mimosa

Is there anything else people would suggest for South Florida?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ziziphus mauritiana (Indian Jujube) Varieties
« on: February 20, 2020, 11:45:39 AM »
I haven't seen much posted on the forum about it but I had my first large sampling of Thai Giant/Thornless and it was impressed.

Nice fruit but the season is where I think it shines.
A crunchy sweet fruit in winter is a welcome change.

A few years ago I had some at my parent's house (i believe the seeds came from the Caribbean) but it wasn't nearly as good. Too much tannins and not a great texture.

Does anyone know of any improved varieties other than Thai Giant/Thornless?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please Help with this Jaboticaba ID
« on: October 26, 2019, 11:26:28 AM »
I'm no expert on Jaboticaba but I know some of you out there are.

I got this plant as a "Red Hybrid" after I got rid of my previous one.
The more I look at it the less it looks like a Red Hybrid though.

The leaves don't look the same and I noticed it likes to grow in flushes. (my previous Red was continuously throwing out new pretty leaves)

I compared it to the Sabara i have and it doesn't look like it either.
No fruit yet, its been in a 15 gal container for a little over a year

65
Got a good bit of June plum
$2 a pound if anyone wants locally.

https://flic.kr/p/2hiz96Y

Might be able to fill a few medium rate boxes if people want.
I just have to see how much fits.

This comes from large fruiting tree.
It's not the typical dwarf one that is common here.

66
I planted a Pace Mamey about a year ago. I realized later I don't care for the fruit. (if anyone wants to dig it up and take in PM me, it's around a 7g/15g size)

The spot is in the front yard about 15ft from the street.

I already have a fruiting purple starpple (Haitian?) and an Oro Negro avocado tree nearby.
I was originally planning on planting a Lula for the type A Flower.

But if there is an improved starapple around I wouldn't mind planting that.
Does anyone have any experience with the Excalibur and Lara offerings?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kwai Muk (Artocarpus parvus) Varieties
« on: March 22, 2019, 12:08:42 PM »
To quickly summarize previous discussions on Kwai Muks:
It takes a long time to get fruit from a seedling.
Starts off growing slow then speeds up.
Fruits are sweet and tart but seem to be highly variable.
Trees don't seem to be bothered by much.
Great candidate for grafting.

With that being said, it would be great if anyone could comment on good varieties they've tasted, seen, developed or are growing themselves.
This tree is not widely growing so the improvements will be far and few.
Starting off from a decent gene pool will probably help us along.

There's some more good information in the post below

Is this cold front we're in enough to force flowers in most mango trees?
Some of mine only recently stopped flushing.
