Was it from a seedling that they named or from budwood they got?  If it was from obtainable named budwood, where did the budwood come from.

He said they developed it at Treehouse, so it would most likely mean that it's a seedling they started grafting, which originated at Treehouse.

was at Treesnmore the other day, picking out some of the last yellow grumixama plants that Mike had in 7 gal....( and he had some real nice 3 gal plants already fruiting)

He had about 100 producing  trees, and some were loaded with fruit (and it was late in the season I thought?), and I was able to sample the fruits of several trees...I must admit that he has the best grumichamas I've ever tasted.

It's nice to be able to taste the fruit of the tree that you are buying...because some grumichamas are just not that good...having a mealy texture, with a flavor that is not too sweet.

I'm really looking forward to when Mike starts grafting his orange grumixama...out of all his trees, there is only one orange fruited specimen...it's right next to a common yellow fruited type, and the color contrast is stark...I was skeptical at first, thinking that it might just be a sunburned yellow fruited type...but this was clearly not the case...both trees, yellow and orange fruited, had exact same growing conditions.

maybe he should name this variety "Michelangelo"...because it's a real rare masterpiece and wasn't that the name of the ninja turtle with the orange colored head band?  :D

Hello Rob;

Last year I lost 1 Mango , But I added more tis year , the potted trees will go in the heated GH , the ones in the Ground I will cover with Foam pipe insulation for the trunks & This year I plan to spray freeze puff before I cover with the frost covers.

I'm also planning of buying those construction light in the HD & hook it up to a timer for the in Ground trees if it falls below 40f.

That's they only thing that I can do for now , I also started to give away the non essential potted trees & bananas To Family & Friends,

I hope this winter is not a Killer !.

You guys are lucky not to go thru all this to protect your trees ..

Ed.

Mike,
Tree looks low to the ground. Most of the trees at fruit and spice park are much larger.  Are you trimming the tree or is it a natural dwarf?

How big is the box you are shipping?

Mike

Glad to see you selling this fruit!

I've had them once before, but yours were the best I've tasted (maybe the ones I had before were over ripe?  They were cottony fibrous and not too sweet.)

The ones I tasted at your house were excellent...perfectly sweet, and very soft flesh, easy to eat.

I'm definitely going to get a few boxes from you.

More people need to taste this fruit!

It's cold tolerant too! (Survives 25F when mature)

I'll make my money back from buying fruit, by planting seeds!!!

i did not realize you have had other inga fruits...did they look like treesnmore?

I'm not even sure what species treesnmore has...I was thinking inga vera (or affinis)...because his fruits looked just like the ones I got from River's End.

but they have theirs listed as Inga jinicuil (which I doubt it is).

like I said before, the one's from River's End were like eating wet cotton balls, soaked in lightly sweetened water.

when I tasted the fruit at Treesnmore I thought it would be the same, based on the appearance...but I was pleasantly surprised.  I planted all the seeds!  :D

I tasted inga edulis at a couple different places and like you describe,  cotton balls soaked with just a hint of sweetened water, and the pulp was difficult to chew and almost impossible to swallow. I tasted some other types but have no idea what they were specifically. They were definetly better than the edulis I tasted but still were not as sweet with an edible pulp like Mike's.

thanks for info Bob.

I remember Mike saying they get really cottony and bland when they get over ripe...I'm guessing the fruits we had before might have been past their prime?

anyhow, I'm excited to start growing these...they can handle a hard freeze, they can take a flood (my lot is wet), they grow fast, make delicious fruits, and they enrich the soil with nitrogen....I'm sold.

Two trees not required but recommended. Some trees are self sterile and will produce no fruit or very few fruits on their own. Other trees fruit great all on their own. This i'm sure varies a lot depending on the species of inga, but it's certainly true of feuillei.

I still wonder what species you have.  The fruit pods are fuzzy...I don't know if feuillei has fuzzy pods, the picture I saw showed them being hairless (but I've only seen one pic...could be the wrong species in the photo I saw?)

I really think it is Inga vera...but based on the description of the fruit quality in Brazilian fruits book, it doesn't make sense.  I don't see how this fruit could go unappreciated in it's native land.

That was before i found out they have fuzz on exterior of pod. Shape is right, but feuillei isn't fuzzy. FYI Ingas are really hard to identify just from the pod because many have very similar looking pods.

Mike,

thanks again for offering these fruits for sale, they are damn near impossible to find.

I'll be really curious to hear some reviews from the members who purchased fruits.

I'm eager to receive my box, and have plans to order more ASAP (for our fruit club to taste, and to share with friends who like rare fruit)

how much longer do you think you'll be able to fill orders? (when is this crop going to be gone?)

I wonder if some of the fancy produce markets (such as Baldor's in NY, www.baldorfood.com/poducts (http://www.baldorfood.com/poducts), or Robert is Here in FL) would buy your fruit in bulk?

maybe try to contact them? maybe a waste of time?  I think they used to buy miracle fruits from my friend for top dollar.

I received my box yesterday.  My older daughter loved it, my mom and I both liked it, my wife did not care for the texture but liked the flavor, my younger daughter (as usual) would not try it. My older daughter would have been happy to plow through the entire box and was quite disappointed when I set the remaining fruit aside for tonight.

Thanks again Mike!

Mike,

got the fruit today....it had been sitting in the mailbox for a few hours, so it was a little hot, but not cooked.

I think these ones were just a tad closer to being over ripe...they were more cottony that the ones I tasted at your house...but still had a very pleasant floral flavor.

The ones we took from your house must have been at the perfect stage..not too green, not too ripe...they were just a little easier to eat, without having to gnaw the pulp off the seed.

to be honest I really need some more fiber in my diet, and this is not a bad way to get it.

thanks very much for providing the fruits...I will be needing another box or two soon (for the fruit club)  Hopefully your tree has more fruits!

I just finished my last Ice Cream Bean pod, and it was a fun experience.  I gave some to a Colombian co-worker and she said her mom cried when she tasted it, as she hadn't had "guamas" in nearly 50 years!

As for the taste, the flavor is good.  Mild yet sweet and agreeable flavor.  I enjoy eating them, but they are a process to consume (kind of like sunflower seeds).  It takes a good bit of work to get the flesh off the seed and at times the rubbery part that is left was spit out...Would be refreshing while walking the orchard on a warm afternoon, but not too easy to process/consume en masse.

The pod itself is fuzzy as mentioned above.  Going to plant the seeds out see if I can find a few spots where I can stick 'em around my neighborhood.

Inga seeds will all sprout right inside the pod if you let the pods get very ripe. For this reason the pods are picked while still greenish, otherwise very hard to eat with all the roots inside.

Title: Re: Selling Ice Cream Bean
Post by: John Travis on April 21, 2016, 09:47:19 AM
I got mine in yesterday, Pretty interesting! Definitely sweet! The pulp clings pretty strongly to the seed. I shared with some less friends int he office who thought the experience was pretty fun. I don't know that I would say it was similar to ice cream, more like a a pulpy sugar cane. Thanks again!

Received mine yesterday as well.  Thanks.

Unique and interesting taste I've never experienced before; it is like cotton dipped in sugar water as someone described.  My kids seem to like it.  Some funky looking seeds though.

Thanks for my Ice Cream beans, I sat down and ate about 10 of them in one sitting. :) Delicious!
I also got a box of cherimoya from LocalHarvest, but I need to let those get ripe, so I was thrilled to be able to have something to eat right way.  ;D

I like them even with the low pulp ratio.  I thought I read in older posts or talking to you on the phone last year that your Inga tree produced a lot of fruit.  I would constantly be eating them if I had a tree. Thanks for the fruit

I found if you lightly scrape the flesh, and get it seperated from the seed you can peel it off fairly easily.

Title: Re: Selling Ice Cream Bean

great flavor on these...(somehow got a hint of cinnamon in a few? maybe I'm crazy?)

yes the flesh clings to the seed, and is cottony...

but they are refreshing, unique, and fun to eat.

It's virtually impossible to find any other variety for sale in USA (being shipped)...I can't imagine how you'd ship Inga edulis (the true icecream bean)...you'd need a tube, like for shipping posters....haha

Title: Re: Selling Ice Cream Bean
Post by: Tropicalnut on April 22, 2016, 09:55:03 PM
Yes I paid for two boxes because I have been waiting for EVER to get my hands of these fruit, I grew up eating the Inga Paterno and its seeds, but I don't know where to get those here in the States, so I make do with these and they brought back some good memories of my country of origin El Salvador.
The problem I have now is that there is a boat load of seeds that are going to waste if I don’t find them homes, there is no way I can plant all of them, so if any of you want any they are free if you pay for  shipping. Just send me a PM and we can arrange for shipping. I am keeping the humid with the hope that some of them will find homes. 

Inga vera is the closest match I've seen...and is most common inga in FL...grows very well here, handling more cold than I. eduils.

Still selling ice cream beans? I don't know if they're in season right now or not but if you still are, or plan on selling them again once they're in season, I'd be interested in purchasing a box.

I like them too, Mike. Never had them before, so had to try. Thanks again. Yes, lots of seeds. Some of the seeds germinated inside the pods. I am going to plant some and give some to my freinds.

The seed pods I received were good. Seed had at least 75% germination within 2 weeks, a few came up later. The large seeds make this a beast, by the time they broke surface they had 4-5" roots. Many have made multiple sprouts from a single seed, all are in 1 gallon and up to 6" tall in one month. Good buy.
