Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Seeking info on M-4 mango

Good news to me!  Hope M-4 lives up to all the hype.

My Phoenix is well branched and about 8 ft. tall and can easily hold fruit for a good evaluation next year. I think that they will show what there made of right away and every variety I have grown over the decades has shown this, including the new Peach Cobbler which in it's second year of production, tastes the same as the first year. If it starts tasting better in a few years, than it's  a bonus!

29
Me too, I did not think it would give me any doubt of it's worth, but it did. Now have to ride it out another year. If it sucks, the space will give me more room for another shaded structure for my figs, so I can't lose. lol

That was Rob but the fruit was taken from the mother tree I believe and am pretty much sure of. These grafted trees are different animals.  It is an amazing tree, very healthy and vibrant. I will let mine fruit one time to prove if it stays or gets the ax. Do not need multiple years to tell if it has value!

Thanks for info Rob. I sorta figured that may be the case but I was hoping there might be a chance. PC is a fast grower and HK seems so slow. Cotton Candy I had and dumped so am looking for something with a different flavor profile.  Phoenix has shown poor quality so far in evaluations out here. All have been sour and off tasting. My friend Steve from Fruitscapes has said every one of them has sucked no matter how long they have ripened on the tree so not a good sign. Then he went on to say Gary said the same thing, that he is disappointed in the tree so does not sound promising.  So that tree more then likely will be pulled!  So I want another variety for my Peach Cobbler for that flavor profile is a bit much for a whole tree!  What about Nancy?  this is upright I believe since it is related to Sweet Tart and that is upright!  Nancy I loved, a great mango!

I know he said E-4 Squam.  But they seem to be pretty comparable from what has been written.

If your evaluation is correct for all the fruit trees being grown, that would be a downer. I have an M-4 and if it tastes like pineapple, that tree will be gone the next day.

I want to have a few varieties on my Peach Cobbler tree!  any suggestions? Honey Kiss would be my first choice for I want a late season mango, but am thinking they might grow totally different and not compliment each other.

Must be loads of E-4 'S being sold for I tasted it too. I thought I would hear more about the M-4 but I guess not.

Take that back. Recounted LSU B.  and I have 28 now.  I see 40 -50 for a first year plant.

Had my first Peach Cobbler vs. the second Lemon Zest, The PC won decisively and it was a pretty good LZ. I am impressed by P.C and can only imagine what the later ripening ones are going to taste like.

Our warm temps and high humidity get figs to grow much faster here. Most of my first year cuttings are over 3 1/2 ft. tall and a few at 5 ft. now. My Cavaliere has 21 figs or more on it now and is a rare fig. My LSU Black has just under 20 but I expect about 30 figs minimum it's first year. I think you have to push more fertilizer in what I call snacks. I use a 20/20/20 with micro's and run it at 300-350 ppm which is roughly a half teaspoon per 1 gal of water. This light amount of food given at each watering pushed the growth and fruiting immensely. I also have a good amount of 13/13/13 in my potting mix that is very slow release over a 11 month period. Just remember the bigger the pot, the bigger the plant. All mine will be in 25 gal pots this year! I go from 1 gal to 5 gal, and then 5 gal to 15 gal, and then to 25 gal. for my final pot size. 25 to 30 gal is no difference, they are the same damn pot so a waste of time.

Thanks for that info Brandon! The one Phoenix I tasted at Fruitscapes was grown by Zills and was for a taste testing Steve had for a few of us. I did not taste sour with that one but it was definitely picked too early. I did notice it had potential however! I am impressed with how clean the tree is, much improved over my Dot and a more upright grower.

Would like to know if anyone has tried any Phoenix mangoes this year? I had only one and it had potential but only fair. Steve from Fruitscapes said he is disappointed and all have been sour tasting. We both have trees of this variety and are crossing are fingers! He has one on his tree and fruited it early to see if the tree stays or goes. My tree will fruit next year, I waited longer!

Nice to see Dot in so many peoples top 3. I find it timeless due to it's unique canned peaches flavor fresh off a tree!

Brix levels are so overrated and misunderstood! a waste of time unless you have nothing better to do!

Agree!  not Glenn to my eyes. I just ate a Glenn a few days ago. Still think they are barely above blah!

I have 31 varieties of figs here and have 40 total. Just got into collecting rare ones from cuttings in late 2017. I am loaded with figs from 1st. year cuttings as of now and our climate is not as bad as many think if you know what your doing. Fig collecting is an expensive hobby and many you are better off buying as young plants vs. cuttings because they do not start well from cuttings and are best started by air layering. Remember figs like cool roots and are also best potted here do to nematode problems. To protect your pots, nothing beats tin foil. I also use shade cloth overhead!

I am surprised!  my dad did not like mango really, until I introduced that one to him. Now my parents have one and a Dot in their yard. Sorry you didn't like it. Orange Sherbet will change your mind I bet! it is the sister to LZ but amps up the orange flavor.

48
chalkiness in Lemon Zest is due to improper picking and ripening of the fruit plain and simple. Calcium has nothing to do with it.

Usually the only reason to pick early is to beat them damn squirrels which can be the biggest problem.

My M-4 in ground is doing well. It is not as fast a grower as my other mango and it seems to have a tendency to being slightly leggy but not as bad as a Keitt.
