Also, is anyone else having problems posting new messages?

A few members have reported having problems so I am just checking to see how widespread the problem is.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dekopon Brix Test
« on: February 23, 2012, 08:32:29 PM »
Today I stopped by Harry's office to test the brix of some dekopon fruit that he received in the mail. Thank you Harry and thank you shipper of dekopon for giving me the chance to try this fruit.

The fruit was pretty good. It's my new favorite mandarin. I can't remember if I liked the pixie tangerines I had last year more though.

Anyways, the brix was not as high as I read they should be. We only tested one fruit so it may not have been as sweet as others usually are but the brix was only around 11. I read that dekopons were around 14+.

Since this was my first time ever using my refractometer it could have been user error in messing up the results but I followed the directions in the book.

We also tested an apple that was at 13.2 brix.

Here are some pics.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Reddest Jackfruit
« on: February 19, 2012, 09:29:12 PM »
I once saw a picture of a jackfruit with flesh that was a deep red.

The closest to red that I've seen in person is in the pic below and it was only a orangeish-red.

What is the most red colored jackfruit that you guys have seen? Please post pics. Only of jackfruit you've actually seen yourself though.

Edit: I can't find the pic. I am looking.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Cambuca (Plinia edulis) tree!
« on: February 19, 2012, 07:47:53 PM »
This is my new cambuca tree that I got from Excalibur Fruit Trees in Lake Worth. It's in a 15g container. Here is some info on it: http://www.fruitipedia.com/cambuca%20Plinia%20edulis.htm

I was told the fruit tastes like orange jello so I am excited.

Adam, do you recommend I prune this tree?

Anyone have any tips on growing it?

Edit: Fixed subject. Thanks to Oscar for noticing the misspelled name.

Here is an interesting article about the new snail that is damaging to plants, homes, and human health in South Florida. I haven't seen any of those snails yet myself. Has anyone else?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Spondias tuberosa

Anyone growing S. tuberosa?

I think Noel may be growing it.

Everything I've read says that no one has been able to fruit it in FL yet. Anyone know differently?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Biowash soap
« on: February 15, 2012, 06:37:46 PM »
Has anyone used Biowash soap for their fruit trees? http://www.fertilizerboosters.com/

Their website makes the product seem like another snake oil. I first heard of it a few years ago at Excalibur. Treehouse Nursery originally told them about it and they sweared by it.

I didn't believe the whole cation exchange thing it said but it did work well as a surfactant and it was also good at killing white fly and other pests. Most soaps will do the same thing. I liked using Biowash over the other soaps though because it said it was natural and that was likely not true with dish soaps, etc.

Anyone have any experiences with it?

I just bought another gallon.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Breeding
« on: February 12, 2012, 04:40:34 PM »
Here is an interesting chapter of a plant breeding book about mango breeding. Click here

Here are my notes about mango hand pollination:
1) In the afternoon of the day before you plan to do the hand pollination remove all opened flowers from the panicle and then place a bag over the entire panicle.

2) The next morning, remove the bag and identify all the hermaphrodite flowers. Remove all other flowers. Take off the anthers from the hermaphrodite flowers.

3) Pollinate with male flowers.

There you go. A simple guide to mango hand pollination. I took those notes from a presentation Dr. Ian Bally did at TREC about his work with mango breeding. I know I had another pdf somewhere that I found with good detailed pictures of mango hand pollination. I think I may have sent it to a few members in the forum a while back. Maybe they still have it. If I find it, I will post it.

Mango hand pollination is probably the best way to breed mangos if you are trying to get a specific cross. I think they said they had over 99% correct breeding rate, meaning that what they thought they crossed ended up being what they did in fact cross most of the time.
