My Honey KIss Mango tree has leaf tip burn from the cheap store fertilizer I used.

The tree is 4 years in the ground and 6’ tall.

Is osmocote a good alternative?  I was thinking I need to go to something with more slow release nitrogen.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Black Sapote - Dry?
« on: August 01, 2020, 09:47:20 AM »
My Maher Black Sapote just fruited for the first time this year.  It's about a 4 year old tree.  It made a few dozen fruits.  They are upwards of 2 pounds each.  I just picked one fruit when it got lighter green colored and developed some small black spots on it.  When I ate the fruit, it tasted drier than I remember black sapote fruit tasting.

Is the the dryness something specific to the Maher variety, or is this something that happens with younger Black Sapote trees?

Thanks,
Brad

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Gas powered hedge trimmer on a pole?
« on: August 29, 2019, 09:11:40 PM »
I am at the point where several of my trees are 12 feet tall or higher. I am just wondering if it would be more efficient to use a gas powered hedge trimmer on a pole instead of trimming by hand on my ladder. Has anyone found this method to be more efficient or not?

Thanks

Has anyone had luck air layering lychee at this time of year?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / A jackfruit named Irma
« on: September 10, 2017, 06:38:27 PM »
When we evacuated Sarasota from the hurricane, I decided to cut one of the jackfruit from my tree that was close to being mature.  I was afraid it might not survive the storm.

It was evacuated to West Palm Beach, and my kids decided to name it Irma.

62 pounds.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Red Morning Jackfruit tasted
« on: July 11, 2017, 09:50:55 PM »
This morning I discovered that one of the fruits on my Red Morning Jackfruit tree had begun to soften.  And it had a deeper sound when I tapped gently with my fingers on the fruit in comparison to the unripe fruits.  At the time, the ripe or was only noticable when I put my nose right up to the fruit.

The fruit was 20 pounds.  The tree was purchased on Rob's recommendation (bsbullie) from Excalibur as a 3 gallon tree approximately 3 years ago.  The tree has been very vigorous, reaching 15 feet tall after 2 or 2.5 years in the ground.

At dinnertime the aroma filled the house.  The fruit was much softer.

The bulbs were large.  The flesh was crunchy for a Jackfruit.  Low latex.  The flesh was very sweet and a good amount of acidity...more acidity and sweetness than I had tasted in a Jackfruit previously.  It reminded me of a sweet tart jackfruit candy.

Delicious fruit.  Highly recommended.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango variety IDs?
« on: June 21, 2017, 09:24:54 PM »
A friend has asked if anyone can help identify these two mango varieties.  He bought the trees a few years ago from a local guy in the area who sells fruit trees on the side.

The trees are grafted but my friend never got the variety names.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee fruit set 2017?
« on: April 09, 2017, 07:16:27 PM »
Curious if anyone has had lychee fruit set this season.

I have (4 years in ground) sweetheart, emperor, ohia, and kaimana trees.

Sweetheart flowered profusely but almost all of the pinhead-sized fruit has fallen off.

A Brewster lychee tree in town had very light fruit set and the fruits are maybe thumb sized.

I didn't follow any practices such as pruning new growth flushes from October through early December, or withholding irrigation beginning in September.

Anyone had luck this year?

« on: June 03, 2016, 06:54:09 PM »
As I was cleaning a Mai 3 jackfruit today, I found out a quick way to remove latex from knives and hands: Dawn dishwashing liquid.

I'm sure a lot of you already know this but I thought I would share that it in case it helps people who are new 2 cleaning jackfruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya Plants in Winter?
« on: February 08, 2015, 10:49:37 PM »
My Red Lady papaya plants were thriving through this past summer and fall.  Many large leaves.  Lots of sweet fruit.  This was their first year of production.

During the past 2-3 months, the number of leaves on the plants has decreased, and only a small amount of small leaves remain, at the top of the plants.  Fruit ripening and production has slowed substantially, and the few ripe fruit we get are mostly bland.

Is this just typical winter performance?  Or have these plants just passed their prime?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First Choquette Avocado
« on: January 05, 2015, 10:41:14 PM »

My Choquette Avocado tree has been in the ground almost 2 years now.  It was purchased as a 15 gallon "Simmonds" avocado tree, and turned out to be mislabeled.  I was happy, since I already had too many things fruiting in mid summer.  Choquette will produce in November through January, filling in an otherwise quiet time of year.  Plus, the fruit are very large and the variety is productive.

The tree is about 10 feet tall and it set lots of fruit this year, but I only left a few on there, so the energy could be directed toward tree growth.

I had intended to leave this fruit on a bit longer, but I found that the fruit had dropped to the ground this afternoon on its own.  It is already slightly soft.  Will only be a day or two more before its ready to eat.

It is about 7.5" long.  I will weigh it tommorow.  My guess is its a bit under 2 pounds.

That's my precious 2 year old daughter, Jade, who was able to hold onto it but not without some difficulty.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon Fruit varieties growth habits?
« on: November 24, 2014, 09:56:44 PM »
Thanks in part to the generosity of forum members, I have gathered several cuttings that I plan on planting along two trellises.  With the exception of Vietnam White and Natural Mystic, these varieties were chosen because they were top  rated by taste tests or by reviewers who were experienced with dragon fruit varieties.

I'm looking for advice on the growth habits (slow vs vigorous) of the following varieties, so that I can decide which varieties get placed together for the best balance of growth on each trellis.

All I have heard is that Physical Graffiti is more aggressive in growth.

1. Condor
2. Cebra/Lisa/Rosa
3. American Beauty/Bien Hoa Red
4. Physical Graffiti
5. Vietnam White x 2 cuttings (one at each trellis, for cross pollination and for pollen availability)
6. Natural Mystic  (chosen because of its high productivity)
7. Delight

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon fruit varieties
« on: November 18, 2014, 04:36:34 PM »
I'm considering the following varieties, all of which I have cuttings of.  However, I'd like to put 3 or 4 cuttings per trellis, so a couple have to go.

Any input or recommendations are appreciated!

Here is the list:

American Beauty
Yellow
Physical Graffiti
Purple Haze
Natural Mystic
Zamorano
David Bowie
Halleys Comet
Cosmic Charlie

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon Fruit Trellis idea?
« on: November 09, 2014, 09:00:45 PM »
I Will be making a dragon fruit trellis.

I have a 4x4 piece of pressure treated lumber that will stick for feet vertically out of the ground. I am debating whether or not I should put a piece of wood perpendicular across the top so the whole thing will look like the letter T. Or should I just leave it alone and have a 4 foot vertical post?

I guess Im having a hard time imagining how the starting  cactus segments run vertically up the post and when they hit the top of the post do they just lean backwards in a horizontal direction off of the post by either training them or by relying on their own little aerial roots to cling on and not fall back?

Or must you train them to go forward and down over the other side of the post in a horizontal direction?

Do the aerial roots support the cactus strong enough or do you have to keep trying the top segments to the top of the post?

Thanks!

Brad
