JF, Can't wait to see the final results.  As you know I have the same plans for my three in one hole cherimoya.  I also think its funny how you're not into labels;  I would never be to remember half my grafts without them.

Greg

Greg, I labeled them with a sharpie...yes it will be interesting.

Guys thanx for all of the tips. However, there has to be some distributor in Miami that sells them. As much Guarapo is pressed in Miami you would think they would be more readily available. I will keep looking and taking more suggestions. Thanx again.

C7, I checked out craigslist Miami and found a few juicers, they are not cheap. I would love to find a manual trapiche.

This will be interesting to see. I can't wait to see the results. What are you aiming for yield wise? 4-5 fruits from each variety?

Nullzy. I'm just hoping half of them will take and then I'll think about yield. I believe I have the timing right this time. 80 percent of my grafts have take so far this year. I've been working with small and medium cherimoya container seedlings and my atemoya and ilama which are on the ground. I'm at 100% with the container about 60% with the trees that are on the ground. I was adviced by Dario and other cherimoya experts to start my cherimoya grafts the first week of April. I hope it work.

Interesting, I need more practice with grafting and success. I am going to be working on trying to graft the other cherimoya seedlings I have. Btw, would you be interested in Taiwan (cherimoya/atemoya, it was obtained from Roger Meyer) budwood in the future?

It's all about timing and the heater I bought for my flowerhouse. I followed Greg's advice after seing his sucess. I've been practecing since March with the container seedlings kept in my flowerhouse with the heater. It works!! I have the taiwanese atemoya but if you have extra TW cherimoya wood i'll take it.

I feel out of place speaking before master grafters but if your grafts take, which I hope you're successful at, you will have an extremely low spreading and heaving looking tree considering the way those branches are pointing.

You are right Tim but it has nowhere else to go.. I'm trying control these trees they are growing faster than I expect. Hopefully if some of these grafts take it will slow it down.

I pruned my cherimoya trees down to 7 feet and since I feel confidence with my grafting techniques, thanks to Greg and C7, I went ahead and multi-grafted my trees. Here are the varieties I grafted and hope they will take. I like to hear the opinions of the master grafters of the forum. Will this work? what are my chances of these graft taking?

Anikulapo thanks for the info,  you seem to have a lot of experience with "exotics" I wonder if you know where i can find, a Lucuma in South Fla? I'd be happy even with seeds, or if you know who sells fruit, etc.  I noticed out in CA they are available , but cant seem to find a source in Fla. or even for seeds online.

Ben Poirier has them, I don't think he has a website but here is his info: BTW, go with the Atemoya as Rob said the Gefner and Lisa are great fruits and I would add African Pride to the list.

You know I am at Rodriguez' nursery all the time.

C7, I know you support your local nursery....you just had a bad experience at Mimosa because of their lousy customer service. Next time you go there ask for Miguel he'll follow you around.

Yep SWR - nice tree - mine's still flowering, but we'll see how many fruits it holds this year -
only 1 in the last two years - anything special you do, fertilizer wise, to make them stay
on the tree?????

They're going to be delish - I can just tell!

I do not know where to but it but what you should be looking for is a special press for the sugar cane.  You might want to contact Robert is Here.  They have a press, or at least did the last time I was there, that "makes" the best cup of pure cane juice you ever had.

JF - the problem with putting sugar cane through a juicer (and raw coconut pulp) is as you said it clogs the filter and could or will eventually damage or burn out the motor.

Rob, I agree. To squeeze a cane it takes me more than half and hour because I have to be super careful with the motor. Another step I have to is filter the guarapo (sugar cane juice) because of bagazo(mash) with a coffee filter or gauze so you can image what trouble I go through to get a pitcher.

JF, The Parafilm is breaking on one of them.  I't's to early to tell if its pushing or if the Parafilm is degrading on its own....

They are probably pushing. My magagna is putting out new growth right now.

JF, here are the pics that you requested. The plants are super healthy and they're starting to flower. Not bad for a very competitive price. Maybe they will have some fruit by the time you come around.

C7, great addition to your collection! those trees were a steal for that price and great size! I agree with Oscar and the rest of the folks about supporting your local nuseries but I couln't pass that bargin.

Does anybody know where one can buy a Sugar Cane juicer???

You can buy a small trapiche in Miami but I use my Breville juicer. it works great but it's a pain because you have to cut the cane is small pieces and clean the filter constantly or you'll burn out the motor.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: More on the J-31 Jakfruit
« on: April 01, 2012, 11:25:26 AM »
Based on my conditions in zone 10B, seedling Jaks are much hardier than grafted trees. During the 33 degree cold we got in 2009, my J-31 lost some branches and a bunch of leaves. It recovered nicely and you can't even tell right now. My seedling Dang Suria was out in the middle of my yard and suffered zero damage. It produced 16 fruits last year and has now has 12 as we speak.  It is 10 foot tall and is an amazing producer of good quality fruit.

I have a seedling on the ground from Jacob, from seeds from Harry. it's called a J-30 something. It has taken 8 days of below 40F, lowest 33F, this winter and it lost most of it's leaves but it is budding right now....is this similiar? Do you have any seed from these?

Check out this foto from last summer of the J-31 Jakfruit going wild. This tree belongs to George in Parkland FL.
I have one of these also and its one of the best.  If you don't have one you are missing out!

Wow, those look like fruta bomba!! How do they taste Noel, I love Jackfruit.

JF

J-31 has that classic banana-pineapple-juicy fruits gum taste but it's more complex and super sweet. I have done many tastings with it and most people love it and ask where they can buy a tree or more fruit. Even when frozen for a few months and them thawed it's still very good.

Sounds wonderful Noel...are they hardy? where do you find these?

African Pride is aa tasty atemoya.  I don't like it as much as Gefner.  I agree it is does remind me more of its sugar apple roots.

Harry

Harry, what are the differences between Geftner and AP??they must be very trivial because I they taste the same to me.

J, the Pierce, Selma, and Booth they all took. I am still waiting on Cangrejos grafts. I"ll post some pics later.

Nice cuban007 but they still have a ways to go. I've had some take in 2-3 days and then died but at least our grafting techniques are working
