Birds ate my mulberry
« on: March 17, 2014, 12:39:16 AM »
 >:(

I had several mulberry that were ripening up and I though great my first taste will be in a couple of days. I went out today to check n them and they weren't there!

I'm taking a wild guess but I'm pretty sure it's birds.

Time to get a fake owl? Or is there an alternative to this?

I had a similar problem.   The problem solved itself as the mulberry trees grew larger.  There were too many berries for the birds to eat so I was finally able to harvest big bowls full.

Earlier, I hung bright CDs on a couple of the trees, similar to Christmas ornaments.  It worked well for a few days, but the birds (mynahs) became accustomed to them.  They work for me if I leave them on for 3 days, then off for 3 days.

We have several mulberry trees and a huge white mulberry and the birds do love them! My feet and hands are stained bright purple when they are in fruit. On the plus side when the birds start eating they spread like wild fire and they grow fast one of the most prolific "weeds" in my garden and they produce so much the trees literally are covered in berries even.the floor below gets covered very messy! And bird who eat them have a purple staining dropping!

Stuart - very funny about the purple bird droppings!

Mike - you could net the thing for now.  I've got a net I can't use anymore,
cuz it accidentally trapped and killed a bunch of beautiful lizards last year
which broke my heart!  They would stick their heads into it and try to move
through and get caught....oh, it was awful to see them hung out to dry.....

But next time I see you, you are welcome to it!

Trick I learned in childhood about mulberry stained fingers: just take an unripe green mulberry and rub it on your stained fingers so that the unripe juice dissolves the pigment.  Then wipe off or wash off.

Grow the king white mulberry.  Most birds don't know they're ripe.

Great tip on the green mulberries to remove the stain!

The white mulberry is nice but I find has a shorter perfect ripeness period and is much more subtle where black mulberry has more acidity. White mulberry is very nice dry as part of a nut mix though:) apparently white mulberry is the fastest known organism very interesting!

Thanks Gary,

I like them little lizards in my yard to. I had a few fall in a planter it's out any holes and when I got to it it was to late, poor little guy was shaking like it had torrents and from the look of how dried up he was. Was a crispy critter when I let him out,

Thanks for the reply guys. I believe the one I have is morus alba Pakistan mulberry. I think I'm going to try the owl thing.

Cheer up, if you're a bird watcher, you have more birds in your yard, if not, from my experience, they usually just want to share a few.
