What animal could be eating my guavas?
« on: April 08, 2014, 05:07:53 PM »
What animal could be eating my guavas?

this is the first fruit of the season! I waited for months, is almost ripe pecked and now I see, seems to be a bird ...

should harvest it to avoid being eaten more, or leave it on the tree to ripen better?

Bird or Rat, maybe....I'd harvest it , cut out the bad part and eat it even if
only 80% ripe...

ya looks like bird might have got u.

i would have picked that thing a while ago...(only because I'm afraid animals will steal them)

they do taste best when you let them ripen on the tree for as long as possible...but it's risky!

Harvest that fruit and enjoy it, before the small animals do it for you!

Yep, bird.  Not a rat.

Ahh haha, I'm so happy, at least someone understands me in the world!

I will bet to wait a little longer: I hate immature fruits ... wanted to know if the fruit will "auto repair" and will be well ripe even where it has been pecked, or will detract from the flavor ...

closer to the philosophy "casino fruit": it's more fun this way ... who will win, me or the bird?

No, will not auto repair. The hole will just be an entrance for fungus, mold, bugs, and who knows what else? Better to pick it now.

Good to know it Oscar. It was a good idea to me to let it in the tree till today: now I know that the birds does not forgive you... and they will go on and on to eat again...

There is another almost ripe one in the tree now,

I should bag it as another forum member wrote... or let it there to see if this was just a chance since it had a branch nearby that allowed the bird to reach the fruit easily.

I hope it's not a rat: give me disgusted, and also infected rats here could spread very bad virus.

Very nice one:

I thought that It would have worms on it, but these are great news: almost all psidium cattleianum and 30% of feijoas were infected with worms of fruit fly, but these guavas are free :-)

It lacked a bit of sweetness, the fruit should stay longer in the tree; also it had only 11 seeds!

You want something that will breathe yet waterproof.  Ideally it should be opaque.  Birds are sight driven.  If a bird can still see fruit inside the bag, it may well still peck at it and damage the fruit, even if it can't get a bite out of it before moving on.
