Temperate Fruit Discussion / What variety of apple are these?
« on: January 04, 2024, 11:14:06 AM »
I found these at Target, Walmart, and Vons. I'd like to grow these in my yard.
Their website doesn't have that info.
Thanks,

At least in California, persimmons that look like these have to be soft before they can be eaten, otherwise the taste is very astringent. We're in Spain at the moment, and these are so sweet and crunchy. Do we have this variety in the US?
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about greenhouse heater and fan.
« on: November 09, 2023, 10:08:33 AM »
Hi,
I have a small heater and a  desk fan connected to the same outlet for the greenhouse. I notice that whenever the heater is on, the fan speed drops a little bit and returns to full strength when heater is off. Is this setupe safe, electrically?
Thanks,

In my area of central CA, it gets down to 30s in the winter. All of my papayas either die or barely survive during that time. I only grown "Hawaiian" papayas. I know the Mexican type is cold hardier but to me they don't taste that good. I'm considering taking them into the living room this year. Will need to deal with the wife about it, but that's another conversation altogether. Lol.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about a wax jambu relative.
« on: August 03, 2023, 09:49:43 AM »
Hi,
I've had this tree for over 7 years, nothing happened until a few months ago when flowers sprouted! Then finally fruits! What's the name of this cultivar and when are the fruits ready to eat? They currently feel soft .
Thanks,

I have 20+ of these of varying sizes, trying to sell them for $1 each, regardless of size.
I'm in the CA central valley, can meet close to, or in, Orange county, LA county, or even Fresno city. Just depends on my travel plan.

I bought it December 2022. Admittedly it has been cold for a few months, but at this time, nothing has sprouted from any of the branches. I keep the soil properly moist, not flooding it, not letting it dry out, etc. I keep scratching the bark off the branches to see if the thing is still alive, and it's all green underneath. What's going on? It's been 6 months.

Thanks,

Hi,

Oahu or Maui?
We've been to both, but that was years ago, and at the time we weren't really looking for tropical fruits.
This time, we're planning to do some general visiting, hiking, and of course search out the  fruits (longan, rambutan, durian, ......)

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Split atemoya fruit while on tree.
« on: November 16, 2022, 09:05:12 PM »
I didn't want any insect to get in, so I picked it and will leave on counter to ripen. Should I keep it inside a ziplock bag so it won't dessicate?
Thanks,

This area of central CA has lots of commercial orchards growing almonds and grapes. This is the only grove with these trees.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What are these things in my container?
« on: November 27, 2021, 05:01:16 PM »
Hi,

An LSU fig hasn't looked healthy for a while, so I decided to check out the root ball.
Found these in the soil. Are they harmful to the tree? How did they get in? The branches also have lots of scales and ants are all over the place.
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is wax jambu true to seed?
« on: November 08, 2021, 09:52:10 PM »
I just ate some "Black Pearl" fruits. They're not really black at all, just a deep , dark red.
Will the seed give me what I ate, eventually?
Thanks,

I put together a GH from Harbor Freight, it was 10' wide, 12' long, and 10' tall. Took a bit of work all by myself. I had it for about 8 years, then the HOA finally noticed that it was visible over my front gate. I was forced to take it down. Now I'm looking for something that can be assembled and disassembled every year. I only need/want it up for about 2-3 months for the winter months. I've looked at the GH with tubular frames and clear plastic cover, and have used a few, they don't hold the heat well at all because there's no floor. They also get wind blown easily, even with tiedowns. The sturdier GH all seem to be the kind that you assemble and leave it place year round. Is there any that can be put together and taken apart relatively easy?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Strawberry guava not looking good.

Hi,
The fruits are turning black and the leaves don't look healthy either. Does it look like over watering to you guys?
Thanks.

Hi,

These are still very small, maybe an inch all around. Other fruits on the tree are still green and maturing.
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What cultivar of "Thai" mango is this?
« on: July 06, 2021, 01:09:42 AM »
A friend bought a box and gave me some to try.
All he knows is they're called "Thai" mango at the store.
He said it's expensive, $33+ for a box of about 10 or so. Length is 6"-7".
Tastes sweet and crunchy, with a hint of tar, which I kinda like.
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How do you minimize the squirrel problem?
« on: June 25, 2021, 04:56:46 PM »
I've accepted the fact that they cannot be prevented, but I'm just hoping to have some fruits for myself.
They've feasted on my plums, nectarines, and peaches. Now they're climbing the mango branches and knocked down unripe ones. I feel sad and angry seeing those would-be delicious mangoes on the ground. I've trapped some of them, and shot others (great fun to see them roll over, Lol). I've already ordered a few more traps, this seem to be the best way. Shooting requires me to be home all the time, I will lose my real job, haha. Is any type of poison food an option? Any advice is much appreciated

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What % shade cloth is recommended ?
« on: May 17, 2021, 11:50:28 PM »
I know different kinds of plants prefer different amount of sunlight.
In my case, all my annonas get burned badly in the summer.
Very dry and hot here in Bakersfield.
I'm planning on putting up some shade, just not sure what % I should get.

Thanks for any opinions,

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Do I really have a "Prolific" paw paw?
« on: April 23, 2021, 12:45:02 PM »
Hi,

I ordered Susquehana and Prolific last year. Received them as bareroot twigs, actually, just twigs as they didn't have any roots to speak of.
Anyways, after a few months and they both sprouted, I'm pretty happy about it. Comparing the leaves of both, the Susquehana definitely looks like a paw paw. However, the leaves of the Prolific look different.
Thanks for your opinions,

Auto vents are $30 each, or $100 for all 4.
Thermostats are $35 each or $60 for both.
I live in Bakersfield, but go to OC and LA areas from time to time.
This weekend, I'll be going through LA, OC, and SD counties.
Can meet up somewhere along the way if anyone is interested.
Thanks,
