Mango flower beetle and sri lankan weevil
« on: March 27, 2024, 12:42:35 AM »

I see a lot of Mango flower beetles and sri lankan weevils on my mango trees. They chew the edges of the young mango leaves. I have tried just about everything to get rid of these bugs (Neem oil, insecticidal soap and many types of insecticides). I still see these bugs.

Interestingly, when I visit local plant nurseries, they have mango trees and all the leaves look perfect. I would like to know the secret. Please let me know if you have a better plan to eradicate these bugs.

The weevils are easily removed by hand or shake the tree and send in some chickens. You will need to squish them on concrete though. Then add spinosad as a root drench for the larva. I find they love mangos and select citrus trees. They really loved my old key lime tree before the cold killed it a couple years back. Weirdly after it died I havent seen them on the property since.  Could also be because my neighbor across the street with his uncared for fruit tree farm has finally moved on and trees mostly died off.

For the Sri Lankan Weevils, I walk around at night with a headlamp on and hand pick the weevils off leaves and drop them in a cup filled with soapy water. As mentioned, while they chomp on mango leaves, they tend to prefer other leaves (here it's been bauhinia, Silk Floss Trees, and Fried Egg Trees, followed by Barbados Cherry and now Canistel).

I pretty much do. Definitely noticed a decline in the amount I have, but they're not gone. I actually enjoy wandering the yard at night with a headlamp on😋

 Bifenthrin

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bifenthrin&crid=3TC4C5TD7Z9XJ&sprefix=bif%2Caps%2C128&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_5_3

This stuff works and so far is the only thing I have found that kills the Sri Lankan Weevil.
When you spray it the next day the weevils are gone
You have to reapply as the next cycle of weevils morph out in 4-6 weeks.
The problem is the weevils also infests oak trees and once they are in an
area it's impossible to get rid of them completely. Keep the young mangos
clean so they can get going. I never spray this stuff on fruit or flowering trees.
If the young mango trees have flowers I would wait until you pull the panicles
then hit them with this poison
