I just bought my first pomelo fruit; how do you eat it? Like a grapefruit with spoon?

Its like a grapefruit, you don't want to eat the membrane.  I cut a slice in it, tear a big chunk out, and peel the rind & membranes off as you go and eat the flesh.  If you cut it all up with a knife you generally slice up the membranes making them harder to peel.

I guess you cuold use a spoon, might be too dense though.

Millet, you mean cut it horizontally and use grapefruit spoon? Are they supposed to be bitter like grapefruit?

I dont eat like a grapefruit.  As Brian said.  I peel it and remove flesh from membrane.  Membrane is tough, tougher than a grapefruits  membrane.

I get mine shipped fresh from a California grower and I k ow he doesnt eat like a grapefruit either.

Citradia, I eat grapefruit with morning breakfast, I cut a grapefruit horizontally, then I take a knife and slice down both sides each membrane and  completely around separating the flesh from the white albedo.  Then I eat it with a spoon. Each wedge comes out easily. Lastly, I then squeeze the empty fruit into the bowl and drink the last of the juice.   I do the very same when I eat pummelos.

It isn't very big.Just ripping it open and removing segments which you then peel is easy enough.Cutting through the equator like a grapefruit is not the usual way and means you have to eat it all fast before spoiling.

Here's how I peel and eat and it, like this lady's demo from Youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVLhIfekw90

Except: I don't have sharp and long nails, so I used knives to peel
off the membrane... :)

Thanks.  I notice in the video they spell the name wrong.  The correct spelling is not pomelo, but rather pummelo.

While the two fruits are very similar, eating a pomelo is just a little bit different from eating a grapefruit. With grapefruit you can just cut it into slices and eat them like an orange. With pomelo it really is worthwhile to peel apart the fruit membranes and separate off the rind and membrane surrounding the edible sacs. Pomelos are very much less juicy than grapefruit and their juice sacs are firmer and hold together well when you peel the segment membrane off. The membrane segments inside a pomelo are also a bit tougher.

Exactly.
And pomelo best varieties have a great taste with a perfect balance of sweet-sour and no bitter aftertaste

Also leave it on the counter for a few weeks before eating.

I learned years ago that pulling the segments out of the rind is the way to go to get maximum fruit content without wasting any of it or getting bitter in your mouth.

I now eat grapefruit the way I eat a pomelo--not the other way around.
