Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Overproductive Fruit Trees... As fodder!
« on: September 19, 2016, 12:51:21 PM »
A few years ago my family used to have pigs, and we gave them almost any fruit and they will eat it all. The most commons were avocados, cherimoyas, oranges and a few types of guavas; but also from time to time mangoes, grapes, persimons, peaches and plums.
Another thing that isn't a tree, but that we used to fed our pigs with was Sechium edule fruits; each year I used to collect maybe a few tons of it, just to give it to pigs. It's very productive, fast growing, almost careless, it controls weeds, and pigs love the fruits. Also if you cultivate it in a shallow soil (no deeper than 1,5m) you can also harvest the tubers that are also edible, and very good in taste; around here people prefer it to the fruit. The tubers are harvested when the vines die, and before it starts growing again!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Does anyone knows this Psidium???

I think I have this species. Very similar to strawberry guava. Mine is 3 year old.

This one is not Strawberry Guava! I have yellow and red Strawberry Guavas, and they are quite diferent! Indeed the leaves have some similarities.

I don't use any of these! Here I usualy aply only sulfur powder, and it works nicely...

Dimpleslee, Grapebush - yes, tff does show up first in the results list of google search but if you actually click on it, it gives you an error or NOT FOUND.

Yes it does; but if I click refresh on the browser, it then Works just fine.

161
For me it Works as well; and it shows in first in results list.
Maybe it's just inside USA that this is happening.

Thank you both for your comments.
Thank you my riend! If this is a double mahoi, they are not easy... at least for me. I already killed two plants!  :'(  But i'm shure that in Madeira Island is easier...  ;D

This variety was given to them about 3 years ago, and aparently it always did nicely for them! It produces at least 2 bunches at a time, but they are much smaller than the other varieties they're growing.

163
Nice diversity! They look very tasty.
I have a Luma apiculata plant, and after your taste description, i'm crossing finger that mine would be palatable...

My cousin is growing this crasy banana, that has set a triple bunch.
The mother plant, last year has divided in 2 and each one produced one bunch, but this one exceded the mother...

Ps. The photo was sent to me by my cousin, one of the owners of the plant.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Myrtaceae by Cuttings
« on: September 11, 2016, 07:52:24 AM »
Thank you both for your replies!

Adam, you're right; if one don't tries, it's sure it will never happen! These are the ones with best results, but I've failed so many times before, with this family (and I still keep failing quite a lot). I'm trying to root a bigger Jabuticaba cutting, using another method, and one of the 3 that I planted using the same method, is still alive after about 6 months; the other 2 had survived for about 2 months and then sudenly dried out. If this one holds it's leaves for another month, I might include it in the next update.

A little update on my Myrtaceae planted by cuttings.
The Pitangatuba and Jabuticaba, are still growing at an interesting rate. The Cherry of Rio Grande and Black Pitanga, haven't had any progress, and had even lost some leaves, however, they're still alive...

Hello my friend! My black sapote didn't survived on the first winter she got, but i didn't give up yet... i'm dying to eat one! Papayas is another problem here, they didn't survived. I think i will have to buy big ones and let them one year growing on big pots... At least i have hope...  ;)

If by any miracle mine produces fruit, and viable seeds, I can save some for you, or may I start them and once they're large enough, I can graft one and send it to you. About the Papayas, I might have some, in a few months; could try to send you a bigger one, in the beginning of next Spring.

Looooking goood

Thank you!

Your mangoes look big and healthy. Great stuff! Thanks for the nice pictures

Thank you!
They're particularly nice this year, after an atypical winter, early this year... Aparently the stress they were exposed was good for them at some point.

WOW! I'm really impressed! Congratulations my friend! What impressed me most is your mango trees, they are great! I'm failed to have a black sapote untill now... Papayas are great too!  ;D

Thanks Luís. I'm not sure if I will have any fruit in the Black Sapote, as it is quite small yet, and is in a really small pot for it's size. Don't you have a plant, or didn't you had fruits yet?
About the papayas, this one is the best one of them, and eventhough it's barely surviving... It is the same as in the 4th image of the first post; as you can see it is much more ugly than it was in winter. This terrain was touched by a fire a some of the plants there suffered a lot, specially the papayas, but also 2 Passiflora ligularis that didn't recovered, and a few others with a little less injuries suffered.
Any of the papayas I sent to you survived?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: macadamia, does it sprout without shell?
« on: August 31, 2016, 05:35:30 AM »
I usualy lightly crack the shell to allow them to sprout faster, but don't think that those sold already unshelled, will do. As Oscar said they're lightly heated to remove some moisture and prevent mold, and you never now for how long, they are unshelled.
I collected some nuts last weekend, If you want some, just let me know.

Here's a little update, on some of my plants, that are now fruiting or flowering, or just developing nicely.

Some of my pineapples. The third one is a sucker with only about 6", and is already sending new suckers.

My black sapote, is flowering for the first time, and maybe against all odds, because it is in a 5 Litre pot, and it is less than 1m high, however it has about 10 flowers...

My Cherimoya, flowering for the new season.

Passiflora ligularis, in it's second crop this year.

Now the mangoes! The first 2 images are from a seedling I grafted 2 years ago, and is developing some huge leaves! It has flowered 2 months ago, but set no fruit, maybe because of the extreme heat we had in the last months. This variety, produces fruits up to 4kg.

This one is my older mango tree, and this year, in it's last bloom set some fruits (much more than the last 10 years), let's see if it will hold them till the end.

My second older mango tree, and for the moment, my best producer! It is a cocktail tree, with 3 varieties, and this year is holding quite a lot of fruit, and still flowering...

Two types of sugar cane, growing nicely.

My best Eugenia Uniflora, flowering again (the first 2 blooms of the year, set no fruit, because of extremely strong wind, and some hail that damaged the flowers, and small fruits).

Another mango tree. This one always flowers like crazy, but sets very poorly, and most fruits come with some kind of deformation, and end up aborting before ripening... (this year is the last chance for it to deliver me some good fruit, or next year, will be topworked, or replaced by something else...).

My Hass avocado, doing his job, nicely as usual.

My peanut plants flowering.

My Solanum robustum, growing nicely.

One of my papayas that survived a fire early this year.

And one of my Dwarf Brasilian, with a small bunch to be harvested in next winter...

172
Congratulations Luís!
They're looking nice! Don't forget to water it while the fruits are still small...

Thank you Luís and Solko! I just chek the description for the species in diferente sites, and it realy looks like Pitomba da Bahia.
It was one of my best shots in the dark, as it was one of the species I was after, since a long time.
Today I had the oportunity of visiting a private colection with a friend, and at the begining it was a bit of a deception, as there were almost only ornamentals, but in the very end of the garden, there were this gem. And now, I think I might know of another one, as I know a tree in another place that has very similar foliage, but I need to confirm it.

The fruit, was a great surprise! At the beginning I tought I wouldn't like it, as it had a bizarre perfume, that to me smelled a bit like formic acid, but when I put it to the mouth, everything changed; the flavor is very good; sweet, with a litle acidity, and last for a while in the mouth. I can't compare it to other fruit I had ate before, but definitly it doesn't tastes like apricots as some people says.

I only had one fruit, but lukily it had two seeds, and the owner allowed me to pick a root sucker with some small roots, let's see if it will take.
