Hi!

Is anyone in SoCal selling mango scions this year? I’d love to buy some if so! :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Upland Nursery
« on: June 16, 2016, 06:20:17 PM »
I visited Upland Nursery in Orange, CA today and picked up a beautiful Kari carambola tree. They had a ton of interesting and unusual trees including a 5 foot tall jaboticaba for $189. They also had a variety of mangoes, bananas, dragonfruit, papayas, litchis, longans, cherry of the rio grande, wax Apple, rose Apple, sapotes, guavas, and lots more. They are a bit pricey but have a ton of unusual inventory.

All I need now is a cocktail cherimoya to complete my backyard orchard. :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / SoCal Mango Questions
« on: October 22, 2015, 06:40:17 AM »
Hi all,

I ordered these trees from TT about a year ago. Here's what they look like today! The stakes are for winter frost cloth wrapping.

Lemon Zest: some growth, but not as much as I expected given how vigorous this variety is supposed to be. Not enough water maybe since the sprinklers are a bit far away. Or ?? I'm working on hiring a landscaper to install a drip line this fall to solve the water issue.

Coconut Cream: lots of growth,  but weak branches. I've had to tie them to the stakes.

Malika: hardly any growth. Gets less sun than the other 2, but still about 8 hours a day.

Questions:
1. What should I be doing differently to promote more growth? I'm currently fertilizing once a month with a citrus and mango fertilizer.
2. Should I prune them?
3. Can I let the coconut cream hold some fruit next year?
4. I have room for one more tree. What variety should I get? Should I try to get a Cali grown tree instead of another from Florida?

The rest of my orchard has also suffered from the drought and will go on drip lines as well. My non tropical trees are the following: Red Baron peach, Flavor Grenade pluot, Santa Rosa plum, Flavor Delight aprium, Strawberry Fig, Gold Nugget mandarin, and a Meyer lemon. Nothing held fruit this year. :( My poor Pierce cherimoya is a leafless stick and my Reed avocado is awfully sunburned.

I also planted a Purple Haze and a Bien Hoa Red dragonfruit about a month ago which are doing well so far.

Thanks so much for your expertise!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Exotica nursery visit
« on: June 27, 2014, 06:45:41 PM »
I visited Exotica nursery in Vista, CA this past weekend. What a neat place, but oh I wish they were more organized in labeling! They had a ton of fascinating plants and I was very tempted by quite a few things. Fortunately my husband was there to keep me from breaking the bank. ;-)

I ended up purchasing a Jaboticaba of unknown variety and 2 yellow passion vines -- one for me and one for my sister. However after doing some googling, it sounds like the passion vines are self sterile? Does anyone have any experience with this variety? Should I keep both of them?

In other news, my mangoes I ordered from TT and planted a few months ago are doing well. All 3 flowered but didn't set any fruit. The LZ has new growth, but the other two don't. If I gave them a little fish emulsion fertilizer would that help stimulate growth? Or should I just leave them alone? I planted them with a blend of palm/cactus mix, organic compost, and perlite.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Looking for exotic fruit tree suggestions
« on: March 13, 2014, 08:37:39 PM »
Hi all,

I recently bought a house with a large lot in Orange County, CA and cleared all of the existing trees and bushes to make room (and sun!) for fruit trees! So far I've planted the following:

- Red Baron Peach
- Santa Rosa Plum
- Flavor Grenade Pluot
- Flavor Delight Aprium
- Meyer Lemon
- Passion Fruit vine
- Coconut Cream Mango
- Lemon Zest Mango
- Malika Mango

And I'm hoping to get a Pineapple Mango from Tim Thompson in June!

During the recent storm one of my mature melaleuca trees toppled and had to be removed. So now I have room for another fruit tree. =D So my question is, what should I get? The space gets full sun and there's plenty of room for something that gets biggish. I'd like to try something exotic. Maybe starfruit? Or Lychee? I like Cherimoyas but I don't think I have time for hand pollination...

Thanks so much for your thoughts!
