Citrus General Discussion / Re: Sweetest Grapefruit Varieties
« on: January 17, 2019, 05:59:44 PM »
Millet,

Thank you for the reply.  I am not looking for sweetness of a sweet oranges.  I am looking for the sweetest Grapefruit varieties out there - The less amount of tart.  You mention Red Grapefruits, are these the Rio Red, and Rudy Red? I get your "Oro Blanco is not a grapefruit", I am okay with hybrid, too.  My dilemma is that my mother in law swear she have sweet grapefruit before and I trying to deliver that for her.  However, based on what you said, this may be a fool errand.

We have sweet oranges, but my in-laws want "sweet" grapefruit.  I was going to order some scion woods from the UCR's collection, but I want to go straight to the experts and save myself a year or two of disappointment later on.

Citrus General Discussion / Sweetest Grapefruit Varieties

Hello everyone, I am on a mission to find the sweetest grapefruit varieties.  I just want the sugar sweetness, as much as possible.  If you have a variety that match this description, can I have the name of the variety and some scion woods?  I want want scions from the tree that you tasted that is sweet.  I have three unknown grapefruit trees, but they are more sour than sweet.  My family prefers the sweet ones.  They are so picky that I am so hesitate to go with the variety that my research online say is the sweetest: Oro Blanco.  I know other factors affect sweetness, but I want to start with the sweetest varieties first then work on the other factors afterward.

Thanks for the help.

100 percents mulberry.  I know know because we have one, and every two or three weeks, I go searching around the tree to see if it holds any fruits.  The leaves are hard burn into my mind.

Ahh... The danger of trying to sneak in a Tropical Fruit Forum visit while working.  Sorry about that Frank, I was calling a customer who name is Jeff, while typing that question.  Looking forward to the mango pictures as I am in the market for one, but I don't think yours will be large enough for my purposes.

LEOOEL, I am seriously considering that option for one of spots.  The problem in California is the sourcing of the plants: availability and extortion price.  I try the seeds route and they grew well for close to a year but I wasn’t careful during the wintering months and they didn’t make it.  I am thinking of heating lights for the wintering months for my mango tree so I can do the same for the same Jackfruit’s.  Also, too, Jackfruit can get pretty big which scare me a bit.

Arvind and John, I admit to being guilty of not naming all fruits tree in my collection.  I have fruit trees spread out in three houses (family houses, I am not rich, lol) in three different locations. The colder locations are getting the subtropical trees like Pomegranates, and fig.  What I am looking for specifically are fruit trees that can be planted for my zone of 10b, and if need be, with some extra protection in winter.

I appreciate all suggestions thus far.  So far it look like a big graft jackfruit and one more mango trees for me.

I have a 10-12 feet papaya tree, it's a beautiful tree with spread out leaves.  For fun, I am considering multi-graft the Papaya as I keep having to cut off the offshoots.  I tried Jackfruit from seeds, but both the ones in pots, and one in ground died last winter.  They will need more protection at my spot until they are older.  Jackfruit is one that I am seriously considering as I know one local grower who have a fruiting tree, but this tree is right next to his house to help with the wintering.  My only concern is that it is will cause me problems 5 to 10 years down the road.

Does anyone locally, I can go LA to San Diego, have sources for garcinia, pitangatuba, surinam cherry?

Brad, I already have a peach tree that is waiting to be grafted next year, going to hit you up for the Zaiger woods if you got them next January.

Being in the 10B zone, I feel like I should try to utilize that zone for plants is better suited to that zone.  However, my suspicion and I may be right is that I mostly have all the plants that should be right for a 10b zone.  I should mention that I also banana and Jabo.  Anyones else have any other thought please chime in.  I was thinking I could just get another mango tree, two, haha, but I want to hold out if there is a more diverse choices.

Hello Fellas,

I have two spots came up for two fruit trees In the Mira Mesa, San Diego area.  Previously I had a Caimito and Reed Avocado that died in those two spots.  The Caimito was doing so well for ¾ of year but this winter slowly wither it down and dried up last month.  The Reed was planted too deep, water rot and the high heat wave got it.   I need to put something else in that isn’t an Avocado or Caimito.  I am done with those two.  I currently have 3 Cherimoyas, 1 Lychees, 1 Longan, 1 starfruit, 1 Sapodilla, 1 Mango, and 1 Wax Jambu.  All those are doing very well.  I am currently and planning to multi graft all my trees.  I already have orange/grapefruit, white sapote, avaocado, jujube, persimmon, grapes, passion fruits, guavas in my parent’s place.  I am thinking some plants that are tropical and subtropical, but also need to consider that they will do okay in my area (10b).  What are you guys suggestions?

11
Is this the sweet kind?

12
How much does a good size sweetheart goes for in California? I been on the lookout for one for a while now, too.

13
Congratulations, indeed.  Seeing your result give me some hope, I been meaning to do something similar to my unknown avocado tree for a while now.  Only problem is, I think tree is way too large now.

Wow that inarch graft idea is pretty slick.  might have to do like 5 or more and when established, just cut the turpentine root stock off completely for fun.

15
You Florida guys have all the good stuff.  Haha.

Hey Phil,  I need to make some time to go see you and pick up those Jujube air-layers.  I could help you dig up that papaya tree while I am there.  I am all booked this weekend, but next weekend I can make the time.

Dennis

Wow, Good timing on this topic.  I was about to order a cotton candy plant from a seller on eBay from Florida.  I have been reading the forum for years now and am aware of the issue with turpentine root stock, but these new mango varieties and the seller's price are so tempting.  I didn't know Behl sell plant btw, I know frank does.  Behl is acutally about 20 miles from my work place so maybe I pick up a mango plant from him instead.  I send you a PM, Behl, hopefully you received it.

Can someone help me ID this Jujube variety?  I have a few Li Jujube variety but this is the one that the wife want.  This is very crunchy, watery, refreshing, but only mildly sweet.  Also, where can I get some scion woods?

Thanks.

Mimosa Nursery in LA has them.  I brought a 15 gallon for $100, not too bad.  Now, I think they sold them $100 for 7 gallon and $65 for 3 gallon.  Mine been in the ground for 8 months now and so far so good.

I've had very bad luck with industrial compost -- several years ago I tried using it frequently and killed lots of plants.  There's something about it, even when used in small amounts, that can hurt plants.  I wonder if its trace broadleaf herbicides from lawns that don't break down.

The lychee and longan love it, though.  They doing some well with a thick layer of those compost.  Banana and Sapodilla not so much.

Okay fellas, I am ready for sapodilla scion woods.  I can pay for the shipping and scion woods, let me know.  Also I will be making a trip this Saturday or 2 more weeks from now up to the LA areas so I also pick up the scion woods, then, too.

My Hasya Sapodilla is not doing so well, my wife put some compost we got from the recycler yard around the plant and it is browning/withering away.  I am, however, not sure if that is the cause for the plant demise or not.  The plant was doing so well up to that point.

My mom do however have a unknown sapodilla that I can trade some scion woods.  The fruits, a grand total of three, are medium size and round shape, not much oval.  I will take a picture and post it this weekend.
