Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Long term cold hardy citrus breeding project

I think two new varieties Iwasaki and Nichinan are slightly earlier than Xie Shan.

Walt I can send you a cutting from my FD now if you think you can work with it but if not we can wait until later in spring.

Any chance we can get poncirus + into the US?

Towards the goal of starting with more desirable poncirus, I can offer my flying dragon variety which originated as a seedling. It is very resilient and has a sour but not bitter, slightly floral taste. It is small and seedy though. I'm am actually beginning my own effort at breeding with it in which I hope to stick mainly to poncirus but maintain this seedlings flavor but get to a larger less seedy fruit.
If you are interested in cuttings from my variety in spring let me know.
Have you looked at the earliest fruiting mandarins for crossing efforts. This could be important for controlling for dormancy.

The trees near where I live have been completely cleaned out this weekend

5
They looked close, should be good in the next two weeks or so, I'll check again this coming weekend

6
I'll check a neighborhood hedge and see how they are doing this weekend

Somebody on another forum posted the sad sights in Florida where citrus groves are abandoned because of the greening. What makes me sad is that the infected trees were not removed. Why? No risk when they are dead?
I hope they are more diligent in California.
To be fair the cat is pretty far out of the bag down there. I think now they are focused on resistance in rootstocks and management of diseased yet producing  trees. Unfortunately, it looks like it's out of the bag in California now too.

I could send seed in the fall.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Large fruited trifoliate
« on: July 27, 2017, 06:45:25 PM »
Does anyone have an unusually large fruited trifoliate? I would like to gather seeds from as many different trifoliates as possible this fall and in particular would be interested in large fruited varieties.

It looks like it is in ground, how do you protect it in the winter?

I couldnt find anything about oranges or grapefruit from france, but im guessing thats because there isnt any commercial exportation of those fruits. Thee is something for lemons/limes from corsica and i have linked information for erthrog. Looks like it should be fine though. You are supposed to leave it in refrigeration for 14+ days prior to shipment to prevent transporting a type of fruit fly. I think FedEx does international shipping. When the time comes I would be happy to transfer payment for this.

Awesome! I'll actually be in VA Beach the first weekend in August. I would love to come check out your trees. The 5* looks like a solid bet for breeding efforts which is what I'm trying to get into long term. Aside from my not so hardy collection the only fruiting things I have to work with at the moment are flying dragon and ten degree. The prague and bloomsweet flowered this year but did not keep their fruits.
