Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Atemoya and cherimoya cultivars
« on: January 18, 2024, 07:05:24 PM »
ateymoya are best suited for Florida, also the "Painter" cherilata is becoming a very popular cultivar that seems to be well adapted and productive in Florida.  Green Planet Farm in Punta Gorda has Cherilata trees.

Thanks for the update, I've seen purple ribbon take light frosts without much damage, Home Green was slightly more frost sensitive in the same field.

Just took a photo of some nice Kava Rangi cuttings. This is a variegated cane with  a white variegated stripe on the leaves. the cane has a green stripe on the stalk. its a very juicy cane that soft easy to peel

10
still shipping order now,

we are planting a new field this weekend and harvesting a bunch for our 2024 Fall season.

11
most ateymoyas are not compatible with annoa glabra rootstock. Some may graft but incompatibilities seem to show up after a year or two.  When choosing to grow annonas one should decide which rootstock is appropriate for your specific soil, climate and conditions. Then find a way to grow your target species. Using an interstock may be useful but that does add complexity to the overall tree which we are still studying.

For example if you want to grow annonas is California, cherimoya is probably your best rootstock. If you are in a warm FL zone 9b swamp pond apple might be your best choice.  Many residential yards in Florida are elevated and cherimoya or ateymoya rootstocks would be appropriate roostock choices.

On my farm we are working with lots of pond apple rootstocks.  The are being planted below grade where they sit in lots of water. We and are testing interstock and graft compatibilities.

Jake, some are soft to chew if don't plan on juicing them with a cane press. some are harder, the fibers are different on each  one and flavor is slightly different also. growth habits are different and then there's visual differences.

Asian black is the softest easier to chew and peel and very ornamental. along with Florida red, don cinco, purple ribbon and kava rangi.

hipasfolk, thanks for the support glad they are growing!

13
The sugar apples don't like freezing frosty weather I consider them a zone 10 a plant, but people in warm zone 9b can manage to grow them also.

drymifolia, hard to know in your climate but the sugar concentrates the longer they grow I've noticed, but yest usually in freezing climates you wait as long as possible and harvest at that time. sugarcane is a grass and respond well to nitrogen fertilizer for growth.

14
Thanks for the orders. Don't forget 10% off coupon code. great time to plant!

15
Thanks for the support everyone!

Any recommendation on what you consider top tier varieties for chewing and juicing?

The purple ribbon and FL Red and Don cinco are my favorite soft chewing canes. The Hawaiian types are not as rugged.  Then there's the hybrid class of canes like san Diego yellow and LA green and yue tang, red hybrid, which have a waxy coating may be good for your desert climate.

the softest cane is Asian black, the hardest can is San Diego yellow.

hope that helps!

Thanks for sharing. Lots of interesting information in that research publication.

Im experimenting with lots species of guavas on my farm. that article enlightens me to more information about guava decline and also how interstocks and rootstocks really affects nutrient efficient uptake in grafted plants as I am also experimenting with rootstock and interstockss for annonas a lot.

It does appear indeed that guineense is used as interstock with cattleium as a rootstock for guajava grafts.  If you have salty soil it appears this would NOT be the best combo possible.  cattleium also may be a more resistant plant for you due to the nature of its waxier leaves. if you graft guajava and guineense interstock it may also reduce flow of water making the guajava grafts wilt more.(hypothesis-depending on graft compatibility) It's worth experimenting with though. It all starts with a problem you have then a way to find a solution to the problem.

I will try it here on my farm in south Florida but for different reasons. as cattlieum is also a more rugged plant that is nematode resistant and possibly more fusarium resistant and can handle the flooding high water table I have.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Big problem with bees
« on: May 23, 2023, 08:38:39 PM »
Its a good time to take up bee keeping. Its a established hive if there is combs and if they have been there a while. Buy a bee suit and smoker and watch some youtube videos on how to relocate them into a hive.  Thats how I got into it when a swarm build a giant open air bee colony in one of my mango trees.

Call a local beekeeper otherwise to remove the hive and prepare to pay a couple hundred dollars for removal.  I did bee removals for a few years and its hard work and stopped doing it cause everyone expected you to work for free. Plus i got around 50 hives at one point which was more than I needed.
