Tropical Fruit Discussion / Diversity or Diversity
« on: March 12, 2015, 09:51:54 PM »
I've noticed that there are two types of collectors on this forum. Those of us who prefer species diversity, Im in this category, I am happy with a couple good cultivars of mango and avocado and jak and save alot of space for other species that don't have cultivars. Wild species that someone would probably never get to try unless you just happened to be in the jungle in which they grow at the right moment.

And then there are those who are really into one species or a couple species. Like Don who collects all the mangos he can find or Carlos and his avocados

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Look at my worm!

Actually it's a caterpillar...but holy moly its huge. Apparently it's been chomping on my soncoya for a while. Looks like one I found on my pouteria hypoglauca a while back.

The picture really doesn't do justice to how huge this bad boy is.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Let's discuss altitude
« on: March 04, 2015, 01:20:35 AM »
So I was doing some research on some nephelium sp. I got and I saw that nephelium maingayi was reported to be found growing as high as 1,200 meters. Which is ~3,600 ft if I'm not mistaken.

Being that I'm from the flattest place on earth...south florida, that seems really damn high to me, but I don't really know what that means in actual temperature exposures in the tropics.

Does this mean that it will be able to deal with my winters or is 3,600 feet in Borneo still ultra tropical?

Does anyone have a cheat sheet for this? Like above 4000 ft in the tropics is comparable to south florida sub tropical winter?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / A Note to Seed Sellers
« on: January 10, 2015, 08:33:13 PM »
I feel like I shouldn't be need to post about this, but I have been having trouble with several of my seed orders lately.

If you are shipping seeds from Asia, Latin America, or Africa to the US, you MUST ship in a moist medium, preferably something with anti-fungal properties like Sphagnum or Peat moss that is slightly moist.

IT IS NOT sufficient to wrap your seeds in cling wrap or seal them in a plastic baggy with no medium. They WILL arrive dead.

Also wrong is wrapping them in plastic and putting moss or shavings outside the packaging!

I am not trying to single anyone out, I am just trying to save myself and others the hassle of having to argue with sellers who are skeptical even after I send them pictures of clearly rotten/fermented seeds.

People who are doing things right, or at least are willing to fix mistakes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya Relative Thread
« on: January 07, 2015, 04:03:45 PM »
I've started planting Papaya relatives, so I thought I'd start this thread to post pictures, comments, and questions.

To start off, is anyone growing Carica pubescens and can post a picture? I'm not sure if I missed labelled mine, the leaves look alot like papaya.

So I got a seedling citrus from a cuban friend, he called it Lima, this was the first year it produced, it gave fruits that looked like a persian lime, inside and out, but tasted sweet.

Anyone else growing this one?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Finally got everything squared away for winter
« on: November 30, 2014, 09:50:02 PM »
It's been a long, costly, and time consuming project, but it's finally done! My permanent greenhouse/shade house/propagation room is done (mostly) and I've gotten all my plants stored for the winter.

All I have left to do is set up a permanent and easy sprinkler system

(How do you fix the side ways photos?)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona excellens
« on: November 19, 2014, 02:11:38 PM »
So I was searching for info on Annona urbaniana and I came across and entry for a species called Annona excellens.

Does anyone know it, apparently its found in Southwest Brazil and eastern Peru.

I wonder if its actually excellens, or if some white botanist who had never tried a tropical fruit was just so enamored by a lowly annona sp. that he named it excellens.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cas, ilama, cecropia
« on: November 18, 2014, 09:17:29 PM »
First is my Cas guava, boy does this thing like water, it was looking frumpy until I put the pot in my pond and let it's roots soak for a month.

Next is one of my ilamas, I think this is being caused by a very intense whitefly infestation I have right now on all my annonas, I haven't been spraying cause winter is almost here and I started keeping bees, but it's seriously driving me nuts and causing a ton of damage. I loathe whitefly -.-

And finally this, idk how this sprouted, I have one solitary cecropia tree. I was under the impression that cecropia needed two trees at least to produce viable seeds. So I was really surprised to see this growing out of the pot of my G. madruno

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Licania platypus
« on: November 12, 2014, 09:45:54 PM »
I have two seeds if anyone is interested. They are big heavy seeds. The fruit taste likes sugar cane mixed with cinnamon. I think you need at least two trees for good fruit set. The seeds sprout quickly and trees grow rapidly.

If anyone is interested PM and we can discuss a trade.
