2 1/2 year old papaya seed grew.
« on: May 08, 2018, 02:37:24 PM »
I got some Cuban papaya seeds from Carcarlo about  a year and a half ago. He had already had them for a year, about two weeks ago I decided to germinate them some sprouted and this one was the first one to pop out . I already had a 3 feet Cuban papaya tree last year it was about to make it through the winter when a unexpected freeze caught it outside in the pot I had it in it was already flowering as well but the flowers kept falling off .

With proper storage papaya seeds germinate up to 5 years, even more with the help of germination substances.
I don't want to criticize your way of germinating seeds, but to me the soil structure you use seems like garden soil. Papayas are very prone to root rot in the first weeks, the soil should be sterile to increase the success rate.

I will remember that for future seed sprouting. The last papaya plant had a lot of luck then, it was all clay soil I had it planted on and when I dug the roots out this spring it was a heathy root system.

I recommend growing Sunrise (aka strawberry) papaya.  The fruits I get off my tree are quite sweet.  Love 'em

I'll try to get some seeds in the winter months so I can grow some next year. I'm still hoping for these other seeds to to arrive .

1 Month update on my papaya tree. It's been growing near the window.
