Want: Canistel, Fairchild #2
« on: June 19, 2012, 03:29:33 PM »
Does anyone have it? I've checked with several growers in South Florida who have Trompo, but I've heard that Fairchild #2 has been selling out.

Also, if someone believes that another variety, such as Trompo or Fitzpatrick, is superior to Fairchild #2, please let me know why!

I have contacted all the usual South Florida nursery suspects. Lara Farms told me they could make me a Fairchild #2 and have it ready as a 1G at the end of the summer. Julian Lara also told me that he consider Ross just as good as Fairchild #2 and that he can sell that to me in a 7G right now.

So I am weighing the decision now. I've read that Ross is slower than FC2 (or other canistels in general). They both sound neck-and-neck tastewise. Any thoughts as to time to fruit, productivity, or reliability between Ross 7G and FC2 1G?

It was nice meeting you the other day at the FNSP.

All the best of luck and hope you find your tree.

Jason,

It was great chatting with you too! I bought a passion fruit vine from you at the Yellow Green market last year and it is doing great. Delicious fruit. I look forward to checking out your heirloom selection of tomato plants in the fall.  :)

if it's harder to find fairchild #2, get the one gal...Ross sapote are dime a dozen. that's why they are available...but no fairchild #2??? sounds more in demand, or harder to find.

I like more rare stuff, so that's my logic

I was just at Benders today to replace a tree that I screwed up and Mike said he has put out feelers, so I will wait for the Fairchild 2! One is bound to turn up one of these days.

Here's a bump. I am STILL looking for Fairchild #2. Anyone? Should I consider grafting onto a sturdy Trompo (if I can find FC2 budwood, that is.)?

I have heard good things about Fairchild #2.  I have Bruce and it is maturing now.  But regardless, for me, Ross is, hands down, better than any other canistel that I have had.  The fruits for Ross will be maturing in the next 30 days or so.

I don't have much experience with the Ross, other that a couple of tastings, but I think the Fairchild #2 is comparable in quality. The advantage of the fairchild #2 is that it's a branch-breaker in terms of productivity and tends to be fairly precocious, setting fruit 18 months post graft. I've never seen a Ross loaded with fruit here in South Florida.
