Question about Avocado root stock
« on: April 13, 2012, 05:01:40 PM »
I want to try to graft a few avocados in the next few months. I bought a few imported mexican avocado's. I think they are mexican hass. Would these be ok for a rootstock or should I look around for some Lula seedlings to use as a rootstock?

Until proven otherwise by poor performance, I would assume they would be fine.

Hass I think would work fine, what is the min. temp you get? I would consider a Mexicola as rootstock, it has great cold hardiness (18F) which should help improve the cold hardiness of the whole tree. I don't know which varieties would have better root rot and nematode resistance (I would seek those out).
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

It gets down to 20 by me, but this tree would be growing under a greenhouse.

One other question, I have found two sources for the Nishikawa Avocado that I am am wanting. One (Treehouse) has them but doesn't ship. The other does ship but I am not totally confident that the tree that I would be getting from them would be a true Nishikawa. Anyone know of any other reliable sources?

I would look for an avocado that can take the lowest temps for rootstock.  Lula would work and there are others that supposed take a little lower (will have to do a little searching to update myself).
