I think Jay's Rambutan did the same on transit.  But I think he says his is doing better now.

Our rose apples are also round.  We give them to our guests as an oddity.   Just weird texture (spongy) and taste (rose water). But pretty flowers!

I was wondering where they got the name for the popular, elevational medicine.......but then I saw that it was a typo.......Ciales, in central Puerto Rico has nothing to do with the medicine.  Nice selection of fruit, Gwen.....sorry they are giving you some cultural difficulties. Interesting to see how things are progressing in your part of the world.

I am hoping other parts of PR are not having the same difficulties my yard is!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cashew Apple Juice

I saw that article earlier.  With the citrus blight, I knew they would be looking for some other fruit for juice.  It is great if they can actually make this work.  I like the taste of the fresh juice.

I would love to try it myself.  Do you make the juice yourself?

Yes, I just squeezed the fresh cashew fruits.  They were very fresh off the tree, so I didn't notice much  astringency.  I added some water and a tiny bit of sugar.

Sounds great!  I don't think I would mind a durian without the usual durian smell at all!

The drought this year has taken its toll:
Gamboge on mangosteens

Pulasans are ripening but not much flesh on them- all seed and skin

Jackfruit has some disease- causing splitting, probably Anthracnose

But not all bad news-
The dragonfruit likes it!

and the Soncoya too!  I was hoping these would be ripe in the next 9 days, but I don't think that will be the case :-(
But interesting thing- I hand pollinated them in the morning, using the pollen from the flowers that were on the ground.

Great selection to start out with.  Soon you will be addicted and need more and more fruit trees!
What is your zone- How cold does it get in winter?

Yum!  You are a lucky man!  Enjoy your bounty- it all looks great!

I have plenty of room to grow, so I don't usually kill something unless it is offensive or in the way.
Disease is killing all my citrus, so that space is opening up.
Yesterday downed a gross tasting jackfruit tree and a noni (pretty but why bother).

Has anyone tried any that are any good?
My friend just sent me some durian snacks and Lychee "pop rocks".  Neither had real fruit in them, but the durian had powdered durian flavor and it had the scent  of durian.  It also gave me the usual durian scented returns (burps) afterwards.
The Lycheee pop rocks were fun as expected, but i couldn't say they had any lychee flavor to them.

Any suggestions for what to do with the jackfruit flavoring?

Interesting stuff!   May I only someday have the trouble of too tall trees or too fat trees full of fruit!

So they use lateral branches, but secondary ones for grafting.  That is different than we had learned.

Also- interesting they pick the fruit green/pinkish, instead of the solid maroon color we are used to seeing.  They ripen off the tree I guess.

Thanks for posting.

Not a problem :-)  I answer to just about anything since my name is impossible for most Puerto Rican's to say!

Who are you working with for the tree? Brunner or ?
I am not aware of many people in PR grafting stuff  (which I need to know since I always seem to need more plants!) and that also ships.

Gwen, the person quoting me for the grafted Rambutan is grafting himself, and has in the past sold me plants that were healthy and competitive in price, but the $45 seems steep compared a $25.

It could be another guy.  I know Juan  is grafting and selling large rambutan trees for $45, so yes, size matters and cost more.  The $25 ones I got this time  are much smaller and younger than last time - maybe 2 ft tall compared to Juan's 3-4 ft branched ready to bloom trees.

Gwen, wow $25 for a grafted Rambutan.  I was quoted at almost double that for a grafted Rambutan from PR.  Eek.

The guy that grafts them is a guy that has a small nursery (he works at UPR TARS in Mayaguez where he gets his material).  But the grafter does not ship them.  I  believe the others resell his stuff.

We can get cleft grafted rambutan here for $25 or so.
I know Juan has been making air layered pulasan grafts.

I have a bunch of rambutan seedlings ready to go for approach grafting of a friends tree that produces 2-3 times a year.  I will try air layering that one too.

Pulasan seedlings seem so much more finicky, I never get more than about 5% that make it past 1 year.

Holy Crap- that is a lot of work!
Thanks everyone for the info. I am not sure it is worth it for the few nuts I get right now. Maybe as the tree gets bigger.

So I see a few mistakes I have made already- mine were freshly fallen from tree.  They need to dry first.
And then it really seems like much higher temps might be needed, and maybe steaming instead of boiling to release the oils.

Always learning!
