Best Tasting Mangos of 2015?
« on: July 27, 2015, 11:47:22 AM »
Which mangos did you find most delicious this year's season? Here's the place to post your Top 5 or top 10...

1. Sweet Tart - This season was the best I've ever had,  so delicious its unbelievable
2. Maha Chanok - has the most complex and elegant flavor, more subtle than a Sweet Tart
3. Fruit Punch - amazing taste but the fruit is extremely sweet & large - a "family sized" mango
4. Edgar - seriously good, hopefully it will be released
5. Lemon Zest - lots of hype surrounding this mango, justifiably so
6. Carrie - a timeless classic
7. E-4 - an unusual, appealing and "different" taste - very tropical & coconutty
8. Kathy / K-3 - superior ZINc seedling - resin heaven
9. Venus - superior ZINC seedling - yum!
10. Juliette -  great fruity-resinous Caribbean flavor

Dot--it's been around a while, but for juiciness, sweetness, and rich mango flavor it can't be beat.
PPK (Lemon Meringue)--the ones I had this year were superior to Lemon Zest.  I'm thinking of adding a tree.
Sweet Tart--it REALLY packs a punch!
Edgar, Mahachanok, Lemon Zest, Fruit Punch--all very good.

Sweet Tart
Cotton Candy
an unknown variety (unknown as tag was lost somehow from the tree it was grafted onto) originated from Gary's program
E-4
Karen Michelle
Yi Xaun (a variety named by Walter Zill...a LZ seedling that will really turn some heads in the coming years)
Cyrus (a variety named by Walter Zill...seedling originating on his property of unknown origin)

Went through my top 10 and its similar to Brett's:

1. J-12 : Best mango I had this season. Each one I sampled was excellent but one in particular stood out above any mango I ate this year.
2. Sweet Tart: Still my favorite mango and quickly becoming one of the most popular among customers
3. Pettigrew: An oldie cracks the top 5! This mango was superb this year (and as far back as I can remember) Terrific balance of sweetness and coconut undertones
4. Lemon Zest: My most requested mango, and it definitely belongs in the top 5.
5. Angie: Mine were consistently excellent and well received.
6. E-4: A 'better' Coconut Cream
7. Pineapple Pleasure: This one (along with Dot) will make you sick if you eat too much of it.
8. Dot: Another oldie well worth being in the top 5. Just wish the shelf life was a little longer.
9. Venus: Just an excellent fruit
10. K-3: I didn't have many of these this year but they were pretty awesome.

Honorable mentions, in no particular order:

Maha Chanok
Kesar
ST Maui
Fruit Punch
Coconut Cream
Carrie
Edward
Juliett
Cac
Ewais

5. Lemon Zest - lots of hype surrounding this mango, justifiably so  A good mango, no doubt, but didn't really WOW me this year--I do see what the appeal is though)
6. Carrie - a timeless classic--I don't consider Carrie to be edible  ;D
7. E-4 - an unusual, appealing and "different" taste - very tropical & coconutty
8. Kathy / K-3 - superior ZINc seedling - resin heaven
9. Venus - superior ZINC seedling - yum! --haven't tried it yet
10. Juliette -  great fruity-resinous Caribbean flavor

I agree with most of those (in no particular order for me, but Sweet Tart is my favorite I think), but will add a few more that really stood out this year:  Kryptonite (won all 8 tastings it was in), Pineapple Pleasure (only had 2, but the flavor is SO intense), Karen Michelle (amazing sweet/subacid balance--Edward seedling), Seacrest (think it's an edward seedling but not absolutely positive--just intense tropical flavor), Marley (citrusy near the seed, very tasty), Orange Sherbet (definitely in my top 5--love this one!), 34-24 (held it's own at each tasting...nice, juicy), Cac (creamy and top-tier), PPK (only had a couple this year, but when they are on, they are as good as any)

Julie seedling from Gary Zill. Got named 'Fairchild Ruby' by Richard Campbell. I have a tree that produced some fruit this year. Nice growth habit, nice looking fruit. Production TBD.

You'd probably love it. The last one I ate was off the charts sweet and scored a 24 on the refractometer.

Walter has me hyped about the yi xuan (pronounced yee-shwan IIRC).  Looking forward to trying Cyrus and Cotton Candy.  Based on the company they keep on your list, I bet I would like all 3 of them.

Oh yeah... Seacrest for honorable mention... an excellent mango... but I stopped eating it once I cut into a Sweet Tart.  I think I even threw part of it out or froze it, and that was kind of a shame.. but what can you do?  ;) Sweet Tart rules.

Richard Campbell told me that 29-26 is Late Julie (I suspect it was a Julie seedling from Gary Zill's breeding program)

Sweet Tard
PPK
Kesar
Fruit Punch
Duncan

Next 5
Pickering
Coc
Edgar
Taralay
Fairchild

I have to wait for California mangos,
Peggy,
Leo#2  Cypress, Magcom, Z,  Paulito, to ripen to see if they break into the top 10.
I can't say enough about ST it's arguably the King of mangos and maybe the best fruit I've ever had

Is there a story behind the name? Wikipedia notes that Yi Xuan was either a prince, a Zen master, or an actress.

1) Taralay
2) Coconut Cream
3)PPK
4)zill
5)Pickering or honey kiss

Thanks to Rob and the Zills, the wife and I have had an AMAZING mango summer.  My list is very loose as I loved something about every mangoe I ate and if I think about it too much my top 5 can easily change, did not eat one I would turn away.  Taralay had something about it that I could not get enough of.
List of what we did get to eat this year (atleast what I remember off the top of my head):

Taralay
Lemon zest
PPk
Coco cream
seacrest
providence
guava
val carrie
honey kiss
mallika
duncan
dupuis
pickering
sweet tart
fruit punch
baileys marvel

gary
pineapple pleasure
venus
carrie
cogshall

You know, it just had a good mango flavor. Smooth and juicy. Gotta have atleast one mango that taste, well like mango in the top 5 lol  Also hard to do the top 5 since so many of the early season mangoes are gone and hard to compare side by side.

Great thread. Would be great to get some of these varieties to Hawaii. Tried  sweet tart, Pickering ,lemon zest for my first time from tropical acres, very nice mangos. I'm hoping I get to try maha Chanok next year

I'll add some more categories:

Biggest surprise(s):

Emerald - After having some lackluster fruit in 2014 this mango rebounded with more than acceptable production and flavor that compared very similarly to Bombay. A potentially good alternative for west indians that have had poor luck trying to grow Bombay here.
Jehangir - had low expectations for this fruit but it was actually pretty good, sweet with some resin. Nice mango

Biggest disappointment(s):

Heidi - my fruit had serious internal breakdown issues, fiber and over-all poor flavor
Mulgoba - normally a top tier mango, the fruit lacked some characteristic sweetness this year imo
Davis Haden - first year this tree produced, Compares to San Felipe in terms of flavor (or a starchy Kent) and develops blemishes and splits out west.
