Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cinnamon
« on: March 04, 2017, 06:18:51 AM »

I reccomend to plant both because they can be easily maintained by prunnning about 10 ft high and both are very good for kitchen as a spice.

Because of high coumarin content in casia, I would discourage use of this species. I think it does more damage than good. Go for the real thing.

If you dont consume it daily and in high doses I think it cannot harm you. But it is true that ceylon cinnamon scent is much more better and is safer.

Anyone growing Cinnamon in sw/s FL.? How big does it really get?

"Which" cinnamon?  Some nurseries tend to abuse the name and interchange cassia and cinnamon.  Leaf shapes are totally different as are the uses, benefits and growth habits.

You can distinguish them not only by the leaf shape but they have different scent. Ceylon cinnamon is sweet  with tone of clove inside. More pungent is cassia and between them Indonesian cinnamon (C. burmanii). Indonesian cinnamon grow very fast, ceylon cinnamon is less vigorous grower. I reccomend to plant both because they can be easily maintained by prunnning about 10 ft high and both are very good for kitchen as a spice.

5 y ago I have small plants in pot but no one survive. They are difficult for growing in containers, may be we have hot summers here. Some plants from Proteaceae family need specific soil composition. With Macadamia I have no problems.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: growing black goji
« on: February 06, 2017, 04:41:15 PM »
i had mine in containers that didnt do so well.
i put them in ground, and they looked shabby for months
i gave them some mycorrhizae, and it took a few weeks
but , they really took off after that.

also, they are in a raised bed with garden soil.
i think when the roots finally hit the soil underneath
(mostly sand), is when they started growing faster.

not sure if i am a fan of the growth habit.
they fall over, and produce "branches" that sprout up,
 then THEY fall over etc...

i did harvest a few handfuls of fruit in the fall.

this is 3 plants... 2 are smaller, most of this jumble, is 1 plant.

Are you sure that it is black goji? (L. ruthenicum) It look like red one... My plants have very narrow and thick leaves.

Very easy to grow. Seedlings need strong light and it was problem here when I start them during winter. Now they are about half meter tall dense bushes, 3 y old. They need good drainage but also like water. Survived -15 °C without any problems.

Sprouting in about a week? :o Hmm, so I must received old ones last time because only 1 seed from 20 germinated after 2 month and half a year after I dont have succes to keep the seedling alive. There were seeds from Brasil. From other source seeds were completely unviable. Good to know, I will order from you when weather will be little bit warmer here and better for transport.

Near impossible for me to germinate guarana seeds. I have them from many sources. They lost viability very quickly.

Hi,

Plinia rivularis seeds arrived in very good quality, most of them germinated. Thanks.

Amazing...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: pics of eugenia pyriformis x lutescens?
« on: October 28, 2016, 06:28:44 PM »
I have one plant from friend which he say is sweet type of E. pyriformis, but it can be a x. It give only one fruit this summer after only 3 years from seed and in 1 liter! pot. I have no any other Eugenia which give fruits in such small stage, only pitangatuba can do the same.

113
From pitangatuba I have some plants (about 15 - 25 cm high) and may by some germinated seeds - i must check them...

Plinia Oblongata, red pulp jabuticaba, very tasty, flavor similar to grumixama.

Very nice plants! Do you have any seeds or you know about source of seeds from this? I Try for a long time to add M. oblongata to my collection and without success

Cheers for the info akanonui 😀👍🏼

I think that P. salicifolia var. capulli will be better for subtropics. I have several plants in garden, but I must keep them in pots because of our strong winters. Fruits are delicious and sweet unlike P. tomentosa wich are juicy but little bit sour. But Nanking cheries have explosive amount of fruits which are very decorative

I wanna know anybody fruiting cherimoya in pot??

I have cherimoya once get to fruit in the pot, but fruit was very small. But I have several times fruits from A. muricata which I grow in 15 gal pot.

It is probably genetic factors that some trees of Rio doesnt produce well. Only one of my trees have reliable flowering and fruiting period and no any else.

118
The age is about 4 or 5 years and they are groowed in greenhouse, sometime in summer outdoor. In winter I keep temperatures about 1 - 5 °C at night. E. candolleana didnt tolerate that enviroment and I must put it to tropical greenhouse. But E. involucrata is relatively cold tolerant

Hi,

I have seeds from the variety ,Krasavice, it is big fruit variety with slightly red fruits. They have a lot of C vitamine and also rutine which is specific for this variety. But remember that sea buckthorn is dioecious plant, so for fruit forming you need also male plant. Seeds are from 2015 harvest stored in frigde. If you have interest, send PM please.

120
Im not sure from what cultivar is my tree, but when I saw the pictures of the fruit you presented here I think it must be a big fruit type. I have 5 trees from that batch of seeds and only this one produce fruits. Last year was only second time I get some fruits from it but they was delicious. It was under name Ibarapiroca.

It is not problem to germinate Grias despite it is slow process, at first I remove woody outer coat of seed and germination start about 5 month. But as shows later, it was not necessary to do it because other seeds germinated without this. Problem with seedlings started 2 years after germination and to date I dont know where is the exact cause. May be short day in our winter (7a) was the main cause. All plants was infested by mites and after I elliminate them, leaves step by step falling down and no any regeneration. It was at winter as I say, but plants live may be 6 month more. Today I have only 1 plant without leaves, so my expectations are bad. All family Lecythidaceae seems problematic in winter month here in greenhouse, but Grias was the most.

122
Guduchi is a big robust plant that need a lot of space in sunny place in greenhouse. It starting to produce flowers from stem right now. I can try to root some cuttings for you.

123
tree looks great Polux, thanks for posting the picture...supposedly this variety is not much taller than 10ft in cultivation.

Thanks, I hope so because my space for them is limited by greenhouse  :)

124
Here is one of my Restingas with interesting umbrella like shape (when I compare it to other seedlings from same lot) and very compact dense growth. They are 3 y. old and about 2 - 3 ft high. I water all jabos only with rain water because tape water is very calcareous.

Here is another one from Europe :)
