« on: February 14, 2024, 08:12:39 PM »
Good evening-

I am interested in growing a Ficus macrophylla but am having a hard time finding a source.  If anyone knows of a source that would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Marcus

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Axilo Mix 5

Interested in using Axilo Mix 5 for foliar application.  Is there a conversion of use on a smaller scale?  For instance, amount of product mixed per gallon.

WTB cherimoya seedlings/rootstock?  Thank you

I think both loquat and jackfruit have great fragrances.

I am hoping to be able to purchase an Amber or Berry jack seedling from someone.  I was a little late in asking Mike for seeds.  If anyone has any extras please mail me.  Thanks in advance.

That is about the same size as my CORGs, though mine turn dark purple when ripe.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Bird Nest In My Tree
« on: June 15, 2013, 10:52:21 AM »

Every year I have a mockingbird nest and cardinal nest among my trees.  The best was a few years ago the cardinals built there nest in a muscadine vine that is trellised just outside the kitchen window.  It was so fun to watch it.

The picture I attached is a mockingbird nest in my grumichama from this year.  I don't know why, but the birds never attack any of my Eugenia's.

Last week I found a compact mango that was a stunning purple in Tampa.  I suspect it is a seedling but it has quite a bit of mangos.  Not sure about flavor but was gorgeous on the outside.  Will try and remember t,o take a pic next week.

10
I tried 5 Pickering mangos.  1 was very good and the other four had a very off flavor, not sure why.

11
I tried a bunch of mangos on my trip to WPB.  For the top tasters were Dupuis, Spirit of 76 and Pineapple Pleasure.  The biggest disappointment was Pickering.  I have mangos on my Pickering at home, if they taste like they did down south I will be replacing it.  I also really enjoyed pico, baileys marvel, ndm, Edgar, zinc, lm ect...

Had my first pitomba today and it was very tasty.  As with Adam it was much better than last year which was its first year fruiting.  It had no resinous piney flavor that it had last year.  Can't wait for the rest of the harvest.  Also, my pitombas are about twice the size of my grums.

The rule is you can only eat the fruit that had fallen on the ground.

Brad, the redlands was outstanding.  I ate both fruit that was yellow and softer and more green and firm and just loved it.

Jeff, isn't your big canistel a Bruce?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit and spice park visit 5/23
« on: May 23, 2013, 08:44:07 PM »
Went to the Fruit/spice park today.  Early in the season for most stuff there but I think I made out ok.  Made it to the row of jab's and wanted to find the white jaboticaba.  I told my wife to look for the jab with yellow leaves, and sure enough it stood out.  Lo and behold, there was one fruit left on the tree.  And it happened to fall on the ground right in front of me!

For me the big hit was the Redlands white sapote.  From afar I saw some man gorging on fruit beneath a tree and figured it was a good one to check out.  Upon arrival the guy looked like a scene from walking dead, only this time he was feasting on white sapote not human.  He had sapote all over his face and shirt and commented that he forgot his knife, haha.  Well after one bite, even though I had brought my knife I looked the same as the other guy.  It was sooo good.  There was also Bonita springs which was good but not quite as good as the Redlands.

I then feasted on many mangos.  Some I recognized, some I didn't.  The clear winner for today was the Spirit of 76.  Absolutely delish.

I then headed to Pine Island for a first visit.  I was looking for a couple things they didn't have so I drove over to Lara Farms.  Julian spent nearly 1.5 hrs giving me a tour.  Along the way I collected a bunch of mangos and mamey fruit.  I also picked up a Ross sapote, haysa sapodilla, green sapote and a gefner atemoya tree, all for $15 each.

I am stuffed with a ton of mangos I need to go through!!!  On a side note, I had a Pineapple pleasure from zills that was incredible.  The whole family loved it, probably tied with Edward, if not a touch better.

I only had 4 last year.  This year there is easily 50 maybe more.  We'll see how it rates flavor wise.

Visiting WPB for the week and visited Alex.  Got Edward, pico, Duncan, carabao, baileys marvel and Simmonds.  I expected the Edward to be great and it was.  I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the pico.  I thought it was outstanding.

Can't to visit again Alex, should only be a day or two!

Jaime,

I live about 30 minutes north of Tampa and had a huge harvest this year.  I am much colder than you so i dont think it was the cold.  Strangely, mine loses some leaves in early spring but never completely defoliates.

The UF collection is in Lake Alfred and is being run by Bill Castle.  I have 9 cv's from UF but they are small trees still.  I may get to try at least one this year if this guy holds on.  It's the Nikitski ranni.

Adam, I am colder than Orlando.  This is my NS1 seedling that flowered for the first time this year, all male flowers though.  The tree is about 10' tall or so.
