JF, you gotta give me more details than that! Was it from a seedling tree? From what you said, I believe it was. Then again, let me remind you that all the Atemoyas that we have here in the US are very inconsistents Quality wise. One year cream of the crop and the next, even the usual squirrels will play soccer with them!

Having said that, tasting is believing! :)

Yes, seedy 30 plus...but who cares look at all that meat! Last two years Cuban007 has tried it and he loves it. I think it has gotten better every year. This is not a seedling I got it three years ago from California tropical fruit trees in Vista. They had it label as African Pride and it sure looks like an AP but it doesnt taste like one. I've had many AP around here includings Cangrejos and this one is superior. The closes one has been Maddock's which was even better.
I have a couple of those "African Pride" atemoyas from Caltropical also. I haven't put them in the ground, and I believe there is some fruit on them, but I'll have to check. Do you have a photo of an uncut one?

Didn't cut it open yet, everybody fell asleep and I decided not to try and eat over 2 pounds of Miya by myself. I'll report back when I eat it. Let's hear some details about the Selma! Did it have good acidity and how pink was the flesh? Was it just some rust color by the skin?
Simon
Here is the Selma half. It has a that great berry taste, very sweet, it has a bit of segmentation like . One of my favorites. It doesn't have the pineapple taste like other cherimoyas, more of a mellow taste. Come on down if you want to try it.

Hey that looks nice Mark. I had Selma in the cherimoya tasting in 2011 grown by Dario but I wasn't that impressed your on the other hand looks excellent. How would it fare against Lisa?
JF,
I like it much better than the Lisa, not as productive but a sweeter fruit for me.

Luc, it looks like they are not too "ultra tropical". I've had one here in San Diego for a few years, although still in a pot. It is about 5 feet tall. I protect it on nights below 50 and it has been doing fine. I doubt I'll get it to fruit, but maybe.

Simon, how was the big cherimoya you showed me the other day? I cut into the Selma today shown here on the right. My daughter loved it and took half. Waiting for the "Ecuador"on the left to soften up. This is the first year I have a decent sized one.

« on: November 17, 2013, 04:04:37 PM »
This is my friends tree and it is down in Chula Vista in southern California. The tree is real productive. I've never heard of that variety JF, I guess it is a seedling brought up from Mexico. The tree was about 25 feet tall last time I saw it.

The Pierce will always beat Lisa or any other atemoya for my taste. I eat Lisa's every year, but always prefer the cherimoyas. I just ate some of the mangos from Paul Thomson's old place and got some real tasty ones.

Simon, there is a guy at the farmers market in Escondido by the golf course on Sundays that has good cherimoyas, I don't know if he has them now, but they are real good. If you want to come down to my place I can give you a few I have ripe ones all the time. I just bring them to work and feed the other people.

Checking to see if anyone has seeds of this and what are some of it's characteristics, the leaves seem like they could handle the some southern California climate. Also interested in the taste, it looks nice.

Thanks,  Mark

I just picked up a seedling of the Harumis from someone here in San Diego, they say they got it from the Fruit and Spice Park. Is there a tree there?

Does anyone have any knowledge of PI having what they labeled as "red megalanthus" and "Yellow Undatus"?. While visiting there in 2011 they had these. I don't know if they released them or where they got them. I'm wondering if the "Red Megalanthus" is "Frankie's Red".

At first, my Yellow Dragon didn't like intense sunlight while it was getting established, it grew much faster under artificial light but once it got established, it was growing really well in full sunlight. Under artificial light and growing in 50% shade, the YD was growing really long and the growth rate was pretty fast but the stems were very thin and round or cylindrical, the stems were not wide and flattened out.

Now that it is established and gets at least 8 hours of direct sunlight, the stems are wide and strong. The Yellow Dragon and Frankie's Red are my two Dragonfruit that does not get sunburned at 95F+ heat in full sun. Here is a picture of the first fruits from my YD. It has Two larger fruit, one smaller fruit and four flower buds on it so far.
Simon

Simon,

My YD is done,  had it's last flower over a month ago, I have some nice fruit, and they usually size up good. Where did you get your cuttings from? I got mine from seeds of a plant from England that made it's way to a friend in Vista and they get some large yellows. Trying to figure out if there are some different types of S. Megalanthus. I also just got a plant from Steve at Exotica that he says came from Trinidad, it looks like a Megalanthus, just need to wait for it to fruit in a few years.

Cherimoya is the tastiest I've had, it beats all atemoyas, sugar apples, custard apples and the soncoyas. I still haven't tried the biribia. Here is the "Selma" I was working on this morning at work. I have 3 left on my tree and they are ripening perfect. They have a berry overtone to them. I've tried pretty much all other cherimoya varieties, Nata, Fino, and a few others are up there also.

Mark, what does Selma taste like? How would you compare it to the others? I'm really intrigued by it for quite sometime and would love to learn more about it. Any chance you have a picture of what the fruit looks like? It's green on the outside right?
Thanks  :)
I'll get a photo of some of the fruit tomorrow when it gets light. The are not perfectly formed like most other cherimoyas, it is green yes.

that's a good point Tim but we are blessed with the ideal climate to grow both...

Really? Here, the only place that seems to grow a reliably decent cherimoya is the cold, dry climate near Adelaide, while Atemoya is at its best in the high rainfall volcanic soils an hour north of here. I couldn't imagine anywhere being perfect for either. Perhaps a place where both will fruit (few places here can get both to fruit reliably or at all) is imaginable, but to have both at their best? I've only had fino and white cherimoyas, which weren't up to it on local comparison. I've put in a few of everything at the farm, which is dryer and cooler than where I am, in the hope I will have decent fruit from each group in the future.

Most cherimoyas may prefer dry climate, but here McPherson does pretty well in our super rainy 150 inches (3810 mm per year) climate. So that may be a matter of proper cultivar selection. They will also set fine at 2000 ft. where it rarely gets much below 50F (10C).

Oscar,

How does the McPhearson taste? growth etc.?

Mark

Mark - did you hand pollinate your Selma tree?  does Selma seem like a low production tree if left to do it's thing?
Tim, yes I hand pollinated it, the fruits are decent size, however very few flowers. Maybe I'll bump up the phosphorus next season.

Paul Thompsons old grove of mangos in Vista still have some varieties ripening as of this week. Strange, but there were a lot of cherimoyas flowering, and I didn't see much fruit set. I guess the cherimoyas just don't get the water as well as the longans, guavas and the one old mango tree that I haven't seen fruit on in 4 or 5 years.

I have 5 mangos left most these late varieties dropped in the last few days. Here is a pic of choc anon, Thomson and keitt......choc anon has the best flavor of all them this late in the season.

Nice assortment of fruit. I Just picked a "Heidi" and have a "Pickering" and "Choc-a-non", not even ready. My NDM is the only one flowering, don't know why it even is.  The photos are from this morning, still with last nights rain showing.

Choc-a-non
