Tropical Fruit Discussion / 1st cotton candy aprium harvest
« on: June 18, 2019, 10:58:09 PM »
some branches I thinned some branches I didn't to see if it made a difference.  Size wise it didnt make a difference...all were a bit bigger then a golf ball.  I prefer my plums green over ripe ones and not a big fan of apricot.  To be honest the main reason I got it was To make the wife happy.   She loves blossoms and they have one of the prettiest of stone fruits.  At green stage it's a clean sour with hint of sweetness no bitter taste at all, so yummy with a bit of salt and crashed chilli.  I don't like the middle stage at all taste like a half rip plum with hint apricot not sour not sweet.  I liked it best when it's ripe where it's soft and fruit easily falls of with just  nudge.   Flavor taste like a plum but where it's soft you get this blast of sweetness with a slight apricot taste.   Taste even better if you refrigerate it.

My tree is going on 5 years its about 7 feet high and 8 to  9ft wide.  Early on only tip prune to remove flowers and remove some super low branches.  The first 3 years I tried to keep it looking like a regular tree but gave up as the branches always want to droop even with stakes.  So I gave up on that.
The last 2 years southern california has been battered by highwinds throughout the year.   In the past santa anas would only hit during the fall but it hasnt been the case recently.  In the past I was able to protect my tree but now that its bigger and wind storm being more unpredictable I just let it be.  As you can see some of damages it sustained from last year.
So my question should I prune my tree any different? And what do you do with broken branches? Prune to clean up the break? Thank you in advance for your input and advance.  I was planning to let it fruit this year but its putting out some weird compacted cluster of flowers unlike the other years.  Anybody knows whats going on?

can I put a root barrier on house side....would this be enough?  how bad are their roots?  I have a partially shaded spot in the front of the house and figured a wax apple would be more beneficial then a non fruit orimental shrub.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / what's in season in Florida right now?
« on: April 09, 2019, 04:40:43 PM »
I'm from California and visiting a friend in about 2 weeks was wondering what's in season right now.  He is located in Pensacola but willing to ship stuff to his house if there isn't anything close by.
If there isn't where is a good place to order to get it mailed?

Thanks in advance

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 1st cherimoya of the season
« on: December 12, 2018, 12:31:14 AM »
It came off of grafted pierce cherimoya.  It's in a 20 gallon pot so  I only pollinated 3 flowers on this tree.  The fruit was a lil bigger then a baseball.  I was hoping it would get bigger but the fruit dropped from the last storm.  The skin already had a bit of yellow blush on it.  When I picked it up the fruit was still hard.  Crossed my fingers that it didn't drop too soon.  After 5 days of just leaving it on the kitchen island this morning i checked and it soften.  In the fridge it went and I I had it after dinner.  OMG! no wonder everybody raves about this variety!  I wouldnt say it was a low seed count but wasnt alot either .
Each quarter contained about 6 to 7 seeds.  The 1st thing I noticed was the clean texture, no grainyless at all, not chewy but not mushy either.  I wasn't to impress with the flavor with the 1st bite.  But and a big but! oh boy in between feeding my 5 year old..the flavor and sweetness started to intensify.   I been to 2 Irvine cherimoya tasting and this one set a new standard.  Definitely this one is going in ground this Spring!

guy selling this stuff on craigslist anybody ever use this stuff? what is it good for?  from what I ask him it sounds like its just kelp meal? does this stuff have a self life....guy claim it was from a vineyard that went out of business and selling it for about 150 for a 220lb drum... 100 bucks if buy in bulk....any info is greatly appreciated

'Kelp based Hydrogel (Hi water absorbent). Mineral rock form. Vineyard went out of business. Excellent water holding capacity. 50% Less watering. Improved nutrient uptake. Below the ground water retention. Use smaller containers for large container growth. Excellent for building super soil and no till. I have noticed explosive growth in my own personal federal, state and local government compliant Medical cannabis garden. E-mail me for a link to a UC Santa Barbara study going on with exopolysacchrides for arid and semi arid soil amending.'

that's what the ad states
