This is my little baby, it's growing VERY slowly...

But it looks very good, Lory. Maybe you should fertilize it.

"Does it need to reach a specific size to fruit? Mine are 5 years old in milk jugs and about 2.5 feet tall and many leaves and branches, but no flowers."

Maybe you should fertilize more, but this is normal, 5 years or more to fruit is ok.

Ok, thanks, I wonder why vermiculite is not enought and why peat moss would help (I should learn!)

I think it's not the first year it's fruiting right? when did it happen first time?
Thanks again for useful information!

No no, ours fruited at 4 or 5 years old, but too shy bearer those times, now fruited much more and I think the next year will be wonderful!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / cacao just sprouted into vermiculite
« on: November 17, 2016, 10:40:07 AM »
Hi, 8 days and they are sprouting, but I dont have experience with vermiculite

would they be fine for 1 year growing into this soil?

Or should I plant them into another kind of soil?

Super cool Miguel, but I didnt got it:

are you saying that pisidum eugeniaefolia doesnt exists?

I grow 3 plants of this supposed species, and 2 of them are flowering now and fruiting for the first time, seeds from USA or Madeira.

And today a seed from a supposed psidium myrtoides from Brasil just sprouted... so it would be a mistery to me to taste both of them...

how should I do for this video to display here at the forum?

Today I tasted a properly ripen one, normal size -bigger than those- and it was incredibly good! red juicy pulp, very sweet and acid, one of my favourite fruits ever!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / psidium longipetiolatum first flowers
« on: November 05, 2016, 06:35:19 PM »
Hi, I received seeds from Miguel 2 years ago or so (sprouted by 14/4/2014), now we have 4 or 5 plants and one of them, 1.2m tall is making flower buds for the first time now!

It is located at my parents weekend house, it took -3ºC this winter with no damage at all. I hope it will bear some fruits to taste and share seeds.

I'm eating my first fruits and i love them! They are big and totally round, only one or two seeds by fruit and very aromatic. I describe the flavour as a mixt of strawberry and a zest of lime...  YUMMY!  :P

I am very happy for you Luis! did you tasted the normal strawberry guava before? how would you compare them? anyway, strawberry guava use to be very variable, and my family and friends think it is one of the best fruits they ever tasted.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 56 Tamarillos. Will I miss the relish?
« on: November 05, 2016, 06:24:57 PM »
Hi "Are Tamarillos climacteric, just as Tomatoes?", no, they should ripen from the plant. I think the snow would not kill the plants, but protect them

1790
Nice find! I'm curious to see how many of the little guys will survive.
If the fruit is not very special, this could be a nice rootstock for sweet varieties  ;D

Yes, all of them had roots (mixed), so it's a miracle for me... I hope all my fruit trees would do that! They should all be fine in the shade now.

About my supposed acid uvaias -none of them fruited yet-, I was planning to use them just for juices, brasilians wrote in many blogs that they drink them that way

Solko, I think you are right and this should be the mistery feature that made my uvaias fruit fly free (while all guavas, sete capotes, pears, plums and peaches were all infected with flies in the same time), so now I will have to fight to fruit the normal uvaia (eugenia pyriformis) with no worms... maybe I am luck enought and the others uvaias are crossed with lutescens, as they seem to produce new hairy leaves too... (in a different way, but hairy too)

Hi, they dont like frosts but they doesnt hate cold weater, so I would just protect them from frosts and wait till the fruits are ok to pick...

1793
Hi, I am amazed by this uvaia (I think this is not e. lutescens), it is the only one I know -of 24 trees-, that suckers like crazy... first I thought that those 20 little plants below the tree were just seedlings from many seeds on the pots, but no: when I removed the soil, they where attached to the root and had tiny root systems... so I am happy because I got many more little uvaias to grow, I hope they grow fine.

Cool Cassio, so that's why my lutescens never gave more than 4 fruits... now that I know it and have another ones, it will bear a lot of more fruit, I hope... golf ball size: more or less, some fruits are bigger than 3cm diameter.

I think that worms make shit into the fruit, but sometimes, at least for guavas, they are just near the seeds and not in the firm part of the pulp, so I use to use that pulp for jams or ice cream... anyway, uvaia doce dont get the fruit fly here :-D

Would it need some cross polinization with other uvaia and/or other eugenias to produce more fruits? it's a 3m tall tree, 8 years old or so...

Marcos, uvaia don´t need cross polination. Just one tree is enough.
I have an uvaia (just one tree) in a pot of 50 x 40 cm which produced for the first time last year. The tree has 1,30 m tall and produced around twenty fruits of variable size.

But, listen to what this man wrote:

"They are light producers and should be planted with another for cross pollination.  "

(same experience as mine)

Hi again folks

Have you ever seen an Uvaia fruiting so small?...

Never, very impressed. How about the fruit taste? I think this is eugenia lutescens and fruit should be sweet. But, being the first time, maybe they were a bit insipid...

Polux: good for you!, it looks pretty... being the first fruit from a small pot, It shouldnt be good, but, was it good at all? Your plant looks very similar to my 4 or 5 supposed lucescens!

Mike: yes, there should be a lot of genetic variation, we will never know... :-S

Maybe the only way to know if you have a cross with lutescens (or a pure lutescens) is the sweet flavour?

Polux and Mike, can you take photos of new growth? I see clear differences in colour and habit from pyriformis to lutescens new leaves

Thanks for your report, I am also using  Diatomaceous Earth and it kills ants, and many other insects... in fact, I used it to control fruit fly the last year and it seemed to work.

8 years old and the tree looks small and beautiful. This plant should be promoted for urban gardeners who lack large space for gardening.Seems like there are many amazing and rare plants in South America. How many years will it start to bear fruit when planted from seeds?

4 years from seed to fruit (my supposed lutescens... I dont know if I have the hybrid), but for now this is a shy bearer... maybe it's just a matter of time, as brazilians told me it fruits heavily (eugenias seem to do this, my black uniflora gave me just 10 fruits per year the last 2 years, but now it's full of them)

Yes, in Brazil they use to plant it in the streets (but not so popular...)
