It should be a weed.

it does not have opposite leaves as guavas (and as all myrtaceae I know)

Hi, thanks both.

Miguel: these seeds are from Brasil, but not from Helton, from Vitor... (but I didnt received them directly from him)

http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/uploads/monthly_2016_04/571c61a384341_Psidiummyrtoides.JPG.b9153312d5ad2454bc70e4fc4d514a8f.JPG

and yes, it could be p. eugeniaefolia... I even saw a picture at another webpage (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Purple-Dwarf-Guava-Araza-Psidium-myrtoides-Rare-Tropical-Fruit-Tree-Seedling-/121837057727) of a bush that had very similar leaves, different to the Helton's one and from the Vitor's photos... Vitor said it's a variety of good taste, I hope so...

BrianL: could you take photos of branches and leaves?

Miguel: do u have photos of yours?

Very nice photos, report and species Miguel, thanks!

How do they compare to grumixama in taste? (I never tasted a grumixama, but I wanted to know); (I tasted eugenia repanda, pitanga and uvaia)

Hi, I will sow some seeds and I am studying the species.

Helton wrote that the fruit has normally 10 seeds:

" Os frutos são bagas arredondadas de 2,5 a 4,2 cm de diâmetro com casca cor vermelho escura quando totalmente madura. A polpa é avermelhada, acidulada, e um pouco amargosa, envolvendo cerca de 10 sementes arredondadas de cor creme." (http://www.colecionandofrutas.org/psidiummyrtoides.htm)

But I can read at ibflorestas that it should have only 1 seed:

" seu fruto é uma baga, globosa, de casca brilhante, com polpa carnosa e adocicada, com uma única semente e muito apreciado pela avifauna." (http://ibflorestas.org.br/loja/muda-40a60-araca-roxo.html)

Who is right?

Did you knew about a psidium species that bears only 1 seed per fruit?

I tried my first, home grown today, I liked it a lot, it was orange, sweet, a mix of banana and cucumber and lemon... should I wait till all of them are orange colored? do all ripe in orange colour or could be green/orange ones perfectly ripe?

A friend of mine that grows strawberry guava and other guavas tasted this variety and said that it was the best he ever had. I am starting to think this is true.

not different to any other lemon guava, but I wanted to take a photo of it

Hi! Pure magic

today I tasted a fruit from a plant that I grew from your seeds from Graça, and it was very good. To me it is different to our lemon guavas, it tasted more similar to the red strawberry guava. Great variety! I will sow more seeds! thanks Steven!

I can confirm it: today, a mail from Spain with pawpaw arrived just fine :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / tasting my first psidium guineense
« on: March 30, 2016, 01:03:28 PM »
Hi, today I went to the greenhouse, touch the lonely fruit of psidium guineense (brazilian guava, choba, guayaba cimarrón, arazá de campo, etc.) on the little shrub and it fell.

I think this report will not be different from what other forum members wrote about this species, the taste is good, maybe too acid, I find it similar to lemon guava (psidium cattleianum, yellow) and to sete capotes or even psidium australe. It had a lot of small seeds that didnt bother me. The little shrub is into a small pot, should plant it if I want more, better and bigger fruits.

It has many cool features, as for instance it is early bearing, just 18 months from seed! It had not worms inside, maybe because it was far from the strawberry guava or just because it is into the greenhouse, or maybe because the fruit fly didnt liked it?

Do you know if the fruit fly eat them in other regions?

It seems to have many medicinal properties, as for instance, anti-caries activity

Hi, today I tasted one fruit that fell from the tree: very good, I cant think of a fruit that is more similar to orange in taste than sete capotes. The size of the fruit is just like the ones from the photos of the last year, with just 2 seeds on it.

It had no worms inside... maybe because I sprayed diatomeas+water over it, or maybe because I am fighting  the fruit fly throwing all the infested p. cattleianum fruits to the trash...

The tree is still flowering (they smell so nice) and there are many fruits ripening, but it's not a heavy bearer.

1944
Today I tasted a second one, yesterday I was near the tree and I touched a fruit and it fell, but it was hard... maybe too unripe, so I waited and this morning it was soft to the touch.

It didnt had worms inside, I believe that the diatomeas method is working for this.

Very good too, but maybe it was a bit unripe, this time I feel the flavour of a tropical guava more notably, but the skin doesnt smell strong, I almost cant smell the perfume if I dont cut the fruit, then it's wonderful.

It had only 4 seeds. I think the size would be bigger if I plant it on the ground.

About the smell of the fruit once opened: my wife feel that it smells like pineapple, I feel grapefruit+guava

Hi, I have a guava fruit that I think it has fruit fly worms inside, or eggs maybe, not yet worms... it fell unripe and I would like it to ripe more... but if it has worms, it will rot...

there is no solution for this? I have some crazy ideas:

what about if I freeze the unripe fruit to kill the eggs (would they die?) and then let it ripe? would it ripe if frozen before?

what about if I put it into the microwave and burn the eggs/worms (and the fruit... but not so much to "kill" the posibility that it will ripe), would it ripe then?

1 month later I tasted the other fruit, very ripe and it was better, acid and sweet, it had a tart taste at the end,
maybe the skin is tart? I could peel them...

the plant is still flowering, that's quite cool

Thanks for the photos. I'm really excited about the flavor of the fruit being like the scent of guava. That sounds excellent. I personally think that's one of the most delicious scents in fruits, but you're right that the average guava doesn't really have that flavor just the scent.

well, I just tasted 1 fruit and it was excelent, but I should confirm that taste in the next ones, and I hope they will not be attacked by med fruit fly... I will report

1949
WOW! This is the first time I've heard of diatomaceous earth being used as a pesticide. Very cool, I'm looking into experimenting on my guava also.

2% diatomeas, 98% water

Hi Huertas, those are beautiful plants, congratulations  :D

Do you remember how long it took for the seeds to germinate? Miguel has sent me some three months ago, and nothing has come up yet... Maybe they need a period of drought, or cold before they germinate?

Thanks for the report and the pictures. They really look like something between a strawberry guava and a feijoa.

Yea, it looks like feijoas bur leaves are bigger, also you could say that the taste it's like a perfect mix between feijoa and guava, as it has the acidity of a feijoa, and the taste of the guava smell.

I didnt sowed this plant: I obtained it from an exchange when it was 1 years old and 30cm tall. But I will find out how long does it takes to germinate very soon, as I sowed all the 8 seeds of that fruit
