Gates was what I used when I ran a big cattle operation in Georgia. Heavy, expensive, and very reliable.    You can find Gates at your local specialty farm supply stores.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Happy Eid!

Eid Mubarak! Went out to the mall in Dubai with my sister in-law's family. Like a freaking zoo everywhere, but it's fun though.

For mango dummies like me, what are your top 5 mangoes? I have Valencia Pride now, but want to add NDM, Mahachanok, lemon meringue, chac-anon, carabao, and pickering to my yard. How are those mangoes? Thanks.

79
One of mine came out,  but it is dead already. Rotten root

80
Awesome news! Thanks.

I have two year old plants growing from seed in pots. They are vigorous growers once they get going. No fruit yet, I’m hopeing at the three year mark I will be seeing some flowers and fruit.

Hello everyone,

Can Elaeagnus Latifolia survive in southern California's environment? Looks like a good plumesque fruit. Thanks.

82
Thank you, everyone for your insights! Luckily,  only couple trees are affected.  You guys are right. There's a lot of wildlife around this place. My big old Caucasian Mountain dog has been killing and bringing moles and gophers back to the house almost daily.

That's why they are having issues over there. Plus heavy mulching and watering ain't help. Thanks.

Hi folks,

It's this thing. This happens on my parents' place not mine. What'd be your solution? I think Tengard SRF would take care of it. My dad wants to spray it with vinegar or something organic which I think it will not work.

Thanks,

84
Help, black beetles are eating our atemoya grove. We have about 1/2 acre of atemoya. What's the best organic way to deal with these beetles? I am thinking to tell my folks to use Tengard SRF on them.

What you ever seen this before?  What kind of beetles is this?

Thanks,

M

Behlgarden,

That's what I figured too.  Dang it, my freaking father in-law. I told him to tip the plant early. He waited until the last minute to do it.

What should I do to it in June? I am not home but I could get my dad to fix it.

Thanks,

These are one year old Valencia Pride mango and an unknown age avocado that were pruned/tipped in the beginning of the year. It has pushed new growth.

sadly the new growth on mango is actually blooms. dont do anything until late June. or you will get more blooms.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Question on cashews
« on: May 09, 2018, 02:51:45 AM »
Dwarf cashew is still big, roughly 20 feet in height. Most of the cashew trees I ever saw was about the same size of an apple tree.

88
That's exactly what I (my folk) did to my avocado tree. It is pushing new leaves and branches like hell. Hopefully, it will fuit next year.

Sometimes stressing the tree out (by topping it or girdling it) is a good way to force it to fruit, and then you can see if the fruit is worthwhile, and if not, you can stump it and graft new shoots.  Avocados sometimes suffer badly from girdling, so topping the tree might be something to try first -- I've gotten a seedling avocado that was ~10 years old to fruit by topping it.  (The fruit wasn't any good.)

Good news. My dad just reported that one of the illama seeds germinated. Illama really tests my patience.

This looks like the commercial variety that I saw in the Atlanta area's farmer markets. I'd love to grow some myself.

91
How are the pricing for 3 and 5 gallon plants? Thanks.

Magnolia Gardens Nursery?

92
Awesome!

93
We have had good success with Champa Nursery in El Monte.

None of mine germinated. My dad has it in his greenhouse. And it is hot and humid like mofo in there and ain't helping.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: An unplanned visit to Mimosa Anaheim.
« on: April 23, 2018, 04:13:48 AM »
My folks just stopped by Champa to look for more trees to plant on their property over the weekend. They told me that Champa has very limited amount of selections now. I also asked them to look for some mangoes like chac-anon, po pyu kalay, carabao, and Maha Chanok, but there's none.

I was in the area for other reason, had some time to kill during the day, decided to drop by Mimosa for the first time. Pretty cool to see fruiting black sapote and sapodilla in containers, give me hope.  :D  On the other hand, I can't believe some of the asking prices :o I heard Champa Nursery in El Monte has healthier plants and better prices.

I have a big backyard so I am going the mango tree route. I will try to keep it under 20' tall.

JF,

So basically anyone who lives in the Valley or IE is screwed beyond recognition? Between my dad and I, we have 4 Alano sapodillas in the ground right now. Every nursery owners we talked to all said that we would have no problem fruiting sapodillas in southern California. I am trying to plant more, but if this is the case, I will look for something else.

By the way, nice looking tree you have there. Thanks.

Alona is my fastest grower. It blooms year round but fruits start to ripen in June or July and it goes on till November. Silas Wood and Makok are both heavy producers

Thanks for the info guys, if Alano blooms year round would that mean it would fruit all year round? Sorry I’m a bit confused   ???

not necessarily Alex. I’m in SoCal so it takes a long time for the fruits to size up and most of the bloom dry up in winter.....it could be posible in Miami. Here in SoCal  it fruits in the mildest areas so if you live in The Valley or inland empire  it may be years or you may never see fruits. I’m looking into introducing several exclusively winter varieties from the Yucatán we will have to wait and see.

CA Hockey: I have no idea of the rootstock these are nursery bought 3 gallon

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: pink namdocmai mango??
« on: April 15, 2018, 07:47:02 AM »
Good thing I decided not to buy any ripen Nam Doc Mai mango at the supermarkets in Dubai. It's the same color as the one in the video. It looks too perfect to be naturally ripen on the tree or by propane gas.

Plus, I can't justify spending $20-25 for two mangoes here.

99
I also have one Alano sapodilla in the ground now.  Hopefully it'll be productive in a few years.

I have about of 200 feet of sidewalk in the backyard and would like to line it with sapodilla or mango trees. Mango trees are off the list because of the sprinkler system for the grass. What cultivar produces bat ball sized fruits? Like the commercial variety with red tint found in the Asian markets?

Thanks.
