Pouteria Tree (Pouteria coelomatica)

Aha!

I do have one on your list after all!!!

Ive been really excited about this one!

PS if I'm not mistaken P. bullata is not endangered or rare.

....ok I checked its vulnerable! not endangered I guess..but I remember lorenzi's book saying it was frequent in nature? another mistake?

I bet it will hold one or two fruits if you let it!

Give it a shot! You may never get to taste the fruits otherwise.

And if you intend to keep it in a pot, why not get it used to fruiting at a young age in a pot, like its supposed to do? (if you want container grown tree).

I hate when people are growing a condo mango, or a container tree, and they snap off blooms to encourage new growth (vegetative).  If your tree fruit at a young age, yes it may stunt its overall growth, but it will fruit more, and as a smaller tree in the long run.

Growing in the ground has a different approach altogether, where some might argue to snap off blooms on even a dwarf fruit tree...to each their own!

Good growing!

Yes Oscar,'some would say female 100%, but i think my tree that's femal has 100%androgynous flowers with pollen.  So one of my trees makes loads of fruit, and has nonmale flowers at all...

Oscar,

In past this hermie tree has made a few fruits, but not loads...all by itself.

Mine doesn't have 100% hermies, but a large percentage of flowers are androgynous, and some are male.

I'd rather that, than just a regular old male!!! SO maybe that's the only selling point?

Dave,

Got the fruit from a friend here in FL.

His tree is huge, and makes fruits much bigger than that one!  HE said that one was medium sized.

Its a light bearer, unless you hand pollinate...but makes good amount of fruit without any help.

I have some seedlings I'm growing from this, and may have seeds later this year again!

Booo HOOO!

 :'( :'( :'( :'(

I tell u this!!!

I have intermedia, and what I have in question, is not that. No question.

but seriously thank you for bringing to my attention that the madruno is not what they say it is at daileys possibly!

11584
Ohiojay,

By lemon drop mangosteen do you mean G. intermedia? or G. edulis?

I grow this one, and its nothing like the one I have.

The leaves aren't as brilliantly glabrous and the leaf margins don't look the same either.  Leaves are always smaller to, my leaves are much larger, and smoother to...

Did u see the photo from Daleys nursery in Australia?  its the same leaf...I posted a link.

I'm convinced I've found what species it is...G. madruno.

So here is the update on my imbe trees.

There are two that are flowering (about 10yrs old each) that were definitely acquired at Adolf Grimals property in the Keys.

One of these trees produces all male flowers (I have yet to see a hermaphrodite flower), the other one produces almost as many hermie flowers, as male flowers (and I've had it set some fruits without a pollinating partner nearby.

I have two other large imbe trees from another FL grower (which I purchased recently) one produces only androgynous flowers (almost 100% set fruit), and the other produces mostly male but also has a fair share of androgynous flowers as well!

So I don't think its that rare to have a plant that has male and androgynous flowers on the same plant..

I have two out of 4 that do this!

and two of four come from grimal estate, others origin is unknown.

Thanks for update Tomas :)

I  have some I got in 3 gal from PIN, they are blooming now, but not too heavy...Hope I get some fruits!  The trees are so pretty.

Great job to all!

Thanks Oscar, Tomas, Ericalynne, and all who contributed...

THanks again!

Ya its deficient in nutrient.

Give it a product like Espoma fertilizer (any type of espoma should do, Holly tone, rose tone, plant tone, garden tone,...any of those)

and that should doodily do it neighbor!

when's the last time u fertilized her??? :-\

oscar,

I loaned my book to someone (right when I need it to!)

but I remember it saying that the G. madruno has angular growth habit of branches right???

Mine certainly has this feature, as compared to all other garcinias I grow....If you look at my pics, notice new branches shoot out at about a 45 degree angle...

Maybe we have identified this one???

I hope!!

Now I'm glad  I have 3 if thats the case!

thanks as usual for the good feedback Oscar

the marks on my seeds were much more defined,,,it looked like a computer chip almost...why are yours worn down looking?? almost like an old coin?

thanks for posting pics!

Toptropicals has a pic of a plant called g madruno that looks very similar.

I think it may just be g madruno(Murray had
That species to)

Ive had that species as one of my main suspects based on photos I've seen.

Thanks very much for the input!!!

West viginia / Virginia , south Carolina north Carolina , I can never get it right.  Including north vietnam and north Korea.

Native to north Vietnam

Sorry for mix up

11596
YIKES!!!!

thats the most horrible garcinia fruit you can have i hear!

and Murray did stock that plant at the time of my purchase!!!

I'm almost certain its not spicata though...I've seen this one, and the leaves are much rounder than mine.

I did think for a while thats what it may be...but now I'm convinced its something else (from the Amercias)

Thanks for trying to help me figure this out Tomas!

ya i have some.

It's invasive species, and native to North Korea. (Vietnam not korea! Sorry!)

I want to eat fresh, but people keep saying this isn't the way to eat it...

any one eat the arils fresh? like momordica charantia (balsam pear)?  its very nice tasting and similar in appearance to Gac.  I think you can eat gac fresh, many people just don't do it though.

Why do you care about this one FLGreenman?

11598
Ericalynn,
Did u try clicking on the photo?  It's much larger than u may think.   See if that works to show better detail.

Thanks!!!

11599
Tim,

Thanks for the very kind statements!
Whenever I have guest in my garden, I always tell them not to touch any fruits!

They are like walls of a cavern!  If you touch them, the bacteria and oils on your hands make them look like crap!

That's why my fruits look so good, I never touch them until harvest time.

In a pot!  IT will hav more advantages than a plant grown in Ground...considering your zone is marginal.

Take it from me!  I'm rootbound for life.

and I'm in your neck of the woods
